  1. Not once in my post did I say that only we are allowed to mint a coin, not once. I am a proponent of free enterprise, so if anyone wants to throw 10 bucks at my paypal account, it's: jcollins@cinemaboxers.com And you're right... I didn't know that K/HB made the Canine Cachers - will have to strike up a trade for that since my wife and I are dog people and collect dog related coins. However, I don't think we have anything on our list they might want to trade it for... I don't believe my post insinuated that you were the only ones allowed to mint a coin... I was simply stating that your tone suggested that you two knew more about costs and tariffs than others in here. I guess I shouldn't have used the term "Cornered the market". I meant something more along the lines of, "You didn't invent the wheel here." My only meaning was that many, many, cachers in here have been through the process, so we know what costs are involved.
  2. Wow Jim, I'm not sure what to say...but for starters, you two do not have the market cornered on making coins, and the business of coin minting was running along for some time before you two came on the scene. In fact, you may not know it, but Kealia and HB were actually one of the first ones to come up with a series of coins when they made the first Canine Cachers coin a couple of years ago.... I'm still scratching my head here. Dave
  3. Hmmm... In between the two was a straw, or the nuts were the straw...Poor camel. Exactly! The crowds were screaming for Nuts after they had been "Screwed". I decided to wait until after the holidays since there had been a few new releases that week. Well, the first of the year rolled around, and the straw had been placed. There were new coins coming out daily! A new era had begun! I'll address A&T and PSU Fan here as well, so I dont' totally derail HBs thread. A&T- Thanks for appreciating the humor. You should have read half the emails I received when I released both the Screw coins and the Nuts! PSU Fan- I got rid of nearly all the Nuts in a fire sale last year. (I guess I roasted my nuts!) I do have a box with about 20 Silver plated Nuts though...email me offline.)
  4. I've got some leftover Bikedog coins that have been sitting around my office for too long now. I've been dropping unactivated coins in caches when I travel just to help keep his memory alive. I've got 70 coins left... If you buy 10 of them, I'll let you have them for $50 plus $5 shipping. If you buy 5 then the price is $30 plus $5 shipping. For new collectors, this will be a good opportunity to get some low-cost trade stock. If you are looking to let them travel, this is an affordable way to get a custom icon out there as well. Sorry, but I don't want to break down into smaller quantities at this time. Email your requests, first in, first out!
  5. Agreed. I made 1000 Screw coins, and they sold out in a matter of days... I made 1000 Nut coins to go with them...and ended up with boxes of nuts left over!
  6. So basically you're referencing the whole "old-school" vs. "new-school" collectors. You want the good ol' days, but in reality you're being selfish in a way. You would make it harder for new collectors to enjoy the hobby at the expense of your precious "trade values." Besides, high mintage doesn't mean low trade value...like others have pointed out, coins like the Tracking Time and the Compass Roses are still highly tradeable, even though there were lots made. So where does that leave you? Times, people and hobbies evolve. This hobby is evolving, too. Keep up with it...it isn't a bad thing at all, and it certainly isn't harming the community (I don't know where you got that silly idea from). No need to get hostile here... I fail to see how not getting every coin would hinder new collectors enjoyment of this hobby. This isn't old-school thinking at all either. I used to buy every coin that came out...then it became too expensive. Now, I'll never have a "complete" set of geocoins. Now my enjoyment has been ruined. Everybody stop making so many coins! You have all ruined my fun! It goes both ways.
  7. As to the original post... 1. Yes, I do trade. 2. I rarely buy, trade sometimes, and lately I'm selling a lot. 3. I don't activate anymore, so I trade based on the coin not the icon.
  8. An activated coin is worth less to some folks. So, unless you are sure you will never get rid of it, don't activate it. If you want the icons in your profile, then you need to activate. If you activate, then you need to find an archived cache or someplace else to place the coin or else it will always show in your inventory. It's just a matter of personal choice.
  9. In most cases, it's by making your own coin and trading them. Of course, you have one big purchase up front!
  10. How about Mentos and Diet Coke. Kind of sticky though...
  11. Anyone interested in a Groundspeak Lackey coin? If so...I'm accepting offers.
  12. Thanks RK! That was hilarious! On a side note, as I opened this thread, the Google ad at the top of the screen was for CatholicMatch.com. In big letters the ad says "Faith Matters". Pretty funny if you ask me! Edited to add: It seems that everytime I click to the 5th page of this thread that ad is there. I'm not familiar with Google ads, but I guess it makes sense that they insert ads keyed to words on the page...not as funny that way...
  13. That's easy. Do you want me to send it to your email addy? It's free. The price has already been paid. Hey, I'm just responding to a plea! It's not an uninvited solicitaion!
  14. Maybe this is a result of too many coins being made, and reminting the ones that are in demand. If there were no remintings, then the couple of extra coins the lucky one's got would have trade value. Also, those unfortunate ones that didn't get the coin will need to trade for one. Edited to add: I kind of miss the days when if you didn't log on mulitple times in a day, you could very well miss out on a new release. It kept some excitement in the air.
  15. I think they would enjoy geocaching. A friend happened to mention one day that her church bulletin mentioned bringing a gps unit the following sunday. Apparently her church was having a geocaching outing after the service. That church had a high % of gpsr owners did it? I find that to be very astounding. Perhaps is was going to be a kinda small outing adventure. Who knows. Our church has about 3000 regular attendees. We have 30-50 active to semi active cachers. When we plan outings, we will get 20-30 folks on any given week. There are many more that have gps units that they use for fishing, motorcycle riding, and various other activities. Some join us, some don't. In February, we used the gymnasium at the church to host the first Mega Event on the West Coast. Yep, we've got a few cachers in the church.
  16. WOW! I had never heard of Chick Tracts before so I Googled them. I just read the Dark Dungeons one about D&D. It's hard to believe these people exist and even harder to belive that other folks buy into such amazingly bogus material. If I found this in one of my caches I'd simply CITO it. If I found it in somebody else's cache I'd trade for it and then CITO it. I can certainly understand why you find them hilarious but I also find them disturbing......... I'd never paid attention to previous postings in these forums about them, but after seeing this post, I Googled them as well. However I seem to find myself in the minority here...since I subscribe to the message. However, I still don't think they are something to be left in a cache. But then again, that is not my style of witnessing either.
  17. That's why our church has Saturday evening services as well...our geocaching ministry is out hiking on Sunday! (Well, that's not the only reason they have church on Saturday evenings...but it works for us!)
  18. I'm not sure how I feel about that statement since I am one of "those people." However, I don't think being one of "those people" should mean I am treated with less consideration than someone that is just a collector...but I know others will differ in their opinions on that. I had lot's of extra coins from the "early days". I knew there would be a contstant influx of new collectors, and the older stuff would always be in demand. I purchased extras then, in order to have trading or selling stock in the future. Once, I got burned since I paid high money for a coin that was supposed to be very limited in it's run. Well, once it was delivered, it was beautiful, and a lot of folks wanted them. I was sitting in the drivers seat on that one...until the original minter decided to double the production since so many people were begging for them. I was disappointed since I felt I had the foresight to buy extras. (I also felt I had taken a risk since this coin was easily 7-10 times more expensive that any previous coin.) But, I have been on the other side of the "coin" as well. I had remade my personal coin and used the same dies. I changed the color and the plating on it to differentiate, but I didn't spend money on new dies. As a personal coin, I needed more for my personal use. However, on the "Screw" coins, I have had a lot of folks ask me if I intended to make more. I couldn't see my way clear to remint that coin since I felt it was a "collectible". So, I did the next best thing...we made a new die, for a new screw, for anyone that didn't get a good screw the first time.
  19. I tried a Gronsfeld cipher which uses numbers instead of a word for the key...but came up with gibberish!
  20. Ok, with a little help from my friends...we got the hint. Using a Caeserian Shift Cipher, the hint translates as: "We of peaceful London City have never beheld—and please" That is the opening line of Chapter 32 in Vanity Fair. Moscow 32 Chapter 32 Methinks the key to the puzzle is 32. Now to figure out which cypher was used...
  21. I've seen this reasons listed a couple of times here. Would you really feel bad as long as folks were warned? There are risks inherant in doing any cache. I would probably feel worse about someone having an accident on a cache of mine that didn't have any outstanding factors to it. I would feel bad that they had an unexpected accident, but not responsible. However, if the cache page lists the potential danger, and a cacher goes out at night and gets injured...I just don't know how I would feel. On a related but whimsical note: Maybe we should have an evolution of caching series, where only the best and most resourceful cachers survive. It would insure that only the most able and resourceful cachers survive to perpetuate the game. This would raise the game to the next level. Oh, I forgot...I'm a creationist, so the perfect cacher has already been made...with all his/her inherant shortcomings.
  22. As an afterthought... If you were hoping to get a consensus in here to aid in your decision, you came to the wrong place! You will never get complete agreement with this lot!
  23. I say leave it. Maybe up the terrain a star or two for potentially dangerous circumstances...but the cache should stay.
  24. Excellent! Glad the lower half of the state is covered! Now I need to figure out what to engrave on ours, since I can't just put California. Maybe "NorCal"? I also need to rename our event. --Marky It would have been fun to come up with our own coin that had a top half and bottom half. Maybe next time!
  25. Send in your order I will ask 9key to take care of the order page. I already sent him a note. I'm sure he will get it as soon as time permits.
