  1. Without a boat, you'll only be able to explore the ships that are grounded near the shoreline. The majority are in deeper water. The less-accessable one's still have artifacts such as portholes and various supplies. Witte Marine 2453 Arthur Kill Road 718-984-4100 Good Luck. Let me know how you make out.
  2. Thanks. If you're up for an exploration/adventure cache, check this one out: My Monkey
  3. Uh oh! Hold off on SI, if you don't mind. I'm about 75% done with a large cache and don't want anything overlapping before I'm done. It involves some very interesting places.
  4. Yup, I've been to the ship's graveyard many times. It's certainly among the most memorable places that I've ever explored. A kayak (at high tide) is the best way because of the extreme amount of debris that exists there just waiting to tear you up. There are several ships that can be boarded and explored. The problem is that it is certainly private property. I don't mean to spoil anyone's plans, but the owner of the salvage yard has been known to aggressively chase people out. So, a cache would be a problem, but off-hour exploration of the place is very common. There are many other wrecks along the Kill Van Kull that exist on NYC property and are easily accessable by kayak or canoe. The challange is usually to find a place to put-in. The shoreline is lined with heavy industry and petro chemical plants.
  5. Nice work! When are you going to log my TB??????
  6. Harrald, Are you implying that ALL gay cruising encounters ALWAYS result in sexual relations. And, these sexual relations ALWAYS occur in public locations? I think that that would be foolish to assume. LOL. My observations lead me to believe that hookers migrate to all areas of the city as a result of the police department's actions. Anyway, no one is obligated to point anything out to others, including the cache's owner.
  7. Harrald, I don't believe that I misunderstand the point. The context of this thread is whether or not it's relevant to post a note stating that a cache resides in a gay cruising area. I used the reference to lesbians and minorities to draw an analogy to point out one's inconsistancies. Certainly, I don't condone any illegal activities and would take the necessary actions to avoid or remedy such problems. Blazerfan said: Where is gay cruising illegal?
  8. AuntieWeasel, I agree that the context of your "post" is not offensive. But its context doesn't convey the specific characteristics of the cache's surrounding population. Uperdooper stated that it would be minorities that would cause her to feel "uncomfortable". My question (rephrased) is....How would she point out to other cachers that the cause of her discomfort was due to the fact that the cache resides in a minority neighborhood? Gender correction, sorry.
  9. Mopar, so what was the cause of your "uneasy" feeling?
  10. How would you convey your point to other cachers? Could you please post an example of your hypothetical log.
  11. ONLY if it was part of my experience while finding the cache. NOT to point the fact out to others. Ask yourself this: Would you post a note if the cache was in a lesbian cruising area? Would you post a note if the cache was near an "inspiration point"? Would you post a note if the cache was in a minority neighborhood? I highly doubt it. If you're a homophobe or intolerant, then I'm sure you'll find a reason to mention it, or take pictures, or write down license plate numbers..... Here's a cache in a known gay cruising area: In The Ramble It doesn't appear to be a problem to the 200+ cachers that have visited it.
  12. I happen to have the subject cache on my watchlist and thought that the cacher's displeasure was unwarranted. Log
  13. How about this scenario: Accompany your mother on a maintenance check. Find the cache is indeed missing. Log it as a find. Cache
  14. Yes, good question Harrald. Anyway, I should have mentioned this sooner. After corresponding with Cache Ninja, he expressed willingness to transfer responsibility for the cache over to me. So, whoever wields the power to do so..............
  15. That's unbelievable! Good Job.
  16. That's a well-earned 500! Kber has conquered every major cache around the area (and then some). Nice job.
  17. My comment: "Another CN cache unnecessarily archived" Does not imply neglience by any party. One can interpret it however they deem necessary. Arguments can easily be made for both sides. I believe that Cache Ninja's caches are among the best ever placed. Time and effort were sacrificed by him to bring people to unknown and infrequently visited locations throughtout the area. Anyone who's found (or attempted to find) his caches knows that there is a greater degree of difficulty encountered than most others. That is why I'll make an extra effort to keep these caches active. For whatever reasons, maintenance is clearly an issue (this fact is well documented), but he's also subject to cachers that are quick to press the panic button and log a "didn't find" or state that the cache must be missing. This catches the attention of an Admin. and usually results in an archive. Here are some examples: Yell0w |0nG thIng [vEr3.0=nW} http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...7e-102ec237bee8 - 1 no find >>>>>>>archived sra_li http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...log=y&decrypt=y - 1 record of a damaged container, 1 no find (half-hearted effort) >>>>>archived Cache most likely still there. gwØn http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...14-ff687a5dcf04 - Active cache, no record of a current problem >>>>>>>>archived fl0unDer c4ch3 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...fb-fefa99490885 - 2 no finds>>>>>>>archived Also, CN himself has archived his caches without any verification: AsSaTEAgue 4 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...cf-db6726a2037e -1 no find, 1 note >>>>>archived cladiµs was here + \_0nely blu http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...0d-6432916b1fa3 - 1 no find >>>>>>archived So, clearly there's no winner here. But, there's a whole bunch of caches that could use a visitor. I can only imagine the uproar when I find that dadgum BURIED one!!!!!
  18. Just out of curiosity, what problem are you referring to and who's doing the complaining????
  19. Just like they said, Harrald. It opens a whole new can of worms.
  20. seE YOu http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...2e-242680e804d5 Waiting for Cache Ninja to unarchive it.
  21. That's funny.... Stayfloppy thinks that the Finger Lakes region is a BIT out of the way!
  22. I'm sitting around bored tonight and decided to do some research. According to PQs, here are the oldest active caches remaining in New York & New Jersey: NY: 7 total The Spot: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...25-4ab1d01cdd95 Sleepy Hollow-1: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...6b-c55d0b37fca5 Boston Cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...34-e241a935dcd8 Turkey Cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...26-84eb8cc896c2 Stanley Cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...8e-a933802e946e Tea Party Cache: disabled http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...f8-562ce8254149 Hudson's Folly: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...43-dc91a382be3e NJ: there's only 1 left that was placed in 2000 Gerbil Cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...&log=y&decrypt= Which one's have you found??????
