  1. Whoa, I'm a very novice beginer at this. I've done my share of machine work and a datum in this, never changes, it's always the same exact spot. If I understand you, datums in GPS's change? It may help me to understand the WGS84, NAS27 and other nomenclature if they're acronums, if you'll give me what they stand for? Please go slow, again, I'm new to this sport and trying hard to learn. Coordinates I understand. But, your saying there are different ways of how coordinates are set, like different measurement or method of measuring, ie: metric and fraction/miles and kilometers? Also, if someone could explain the different ways of displaying coodinates, WGS84 and NAS27, why two or more ways, why not standardize this to make it simple for us dummies? ANY HELP I CAN GET IS APPRECIATED, THANKS.
  2. Oh yeah!! He has to learn the handshake and the secret meet-and-greet dance. I'm afraid I've forgotten it myself. Where's briansnat? Wasn't it his creation??? I need a refresher course. Yes, I see now, I must be in the wrong place? I thought this was a site to help the novices?
  3. I saw a topic on Graybeards Outdoor forum about different datums. I thought the datum was an exact location(latitude and longitude). Seems this is something entirely different, meaning a source of longitude and latitude? How does one check witch datum they are using in their GPS and how would you change it in your personal unit?
  4. DON'T WORRY about WAAS! I have mine turned OFF on my 60CS. I did this after looking at the satellite screen and realizing that there were a lot of times I wasn't receiving WAAS signals anyway. No big deal, enjoy your III. You people are way ahead of me, I don't know what 60CS or WAAS or most of the other terms about GPS's, your using means?
  5. Yes, this is the procedure I usually use.
  6. You may want to take a look at my Beginners Guide http://factsfacts.com/geocacher.htm I looked at your beginers page and think I found out that my Garmin GPS III doesn't have or support WAAS? Can it be upgraded and if so, how and where can this be done?
  7. Ive own a Garmin GPS III for about 5 years now, and am just getting started in using it on a regular basis. Originally bought it to find my tree stand at O dark thirty in the mornings. And too relocate a downed deer after you field dress it and go back to your truck to retrieve a cart to haul them out. My occupation uses them more all the time and thought it may be advantagous to learn as much as possible about them and their use. One main problem I seem to have with the unit I have is, I don't use it enough to remember the correct proceedure from one use to the next. I, recently logged onto a Geochace site and have started looking for these things. I can see the fun and learning of doing this but seems like they could have many more functions and uses that I'm still not aware of. Where or what else do I need to be doing?
