  1. Nope, they well be a Professor of Chemistry, but I like to burn things, which some people call recycling... The person below me had better not be umc who has posted to this thread too many times, albeit a while ago. -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine. <a href="http://www.mi-geocaching.org"> <img src="http://www.mi-geocaching.org/images/MIGO_logo_animated88x31.gif" border="0"> </a>

  3. My numbers do motivate me, I admit. After 1.5 years I sit at 576 finds and do not plan on slowing down. I have 5 30+ days under my belt with a PR of 46 in 16 hours. I have however, recently slowed down my per day rate (10 or so) and just increased the frequency of when I go out. I slowed down to enjoy the hunts more, but I still move fast on the way _back_ to the car. -Doc -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine. <a href="http://www.mi-geocaching.org"> <img src="http://www.mi-geocaching.org/images/MIGO_logo_animated88x31.gif" border="0"> </a>
  4. If you like puzzles, here are a few: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=38563 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=46724 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=70059 All have gotten good reviews for puzzlers. Since they are mine, I will say no more -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine. <a href="http://www.mi-geocaching.org"> <img src="http://www.mi-geocaching.org/images/MIGO_logo_animated88x31.gif" border="0"> </a>

  6. Just a few more examples. Here are two caches I have placed, and the comments have all been great: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=38563 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=46724 They are hard, and they are meant to be. There are plenty of 1/1 caches around here, and I refuse to add to the drive up collection of caches. I now only place caches with difficulties of greater than 4. -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  7. quote:Originally posted by Dave54:More important is WHY? I geocache because it's an excuse to get outside and hike around. If I want to do more math I'll just stay at work. You just stick to your 1/1 caches there bub. But understand that some of us like the outdoors AND math. We are not freaks either, we are geeks. Nothing burns me more than people who put down people who excel at different things than themselves. In regards to the original post, do the calculation with and without the elevation correction. Do you get the same Lat/lon either way? Probably, so who cares what the elevation is? When you are actually at the cache there is one possible elevation, right? If you plan on putting it in a tree (and getting the exact elevation above the ground) then you have to have a hyper accurate lock, or put it in a 200' tree I did a cache (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=40996) that requires very long distance/bearing calculations (>800 miles for one of them) that you must use ugly great circle math. I enjoy doing these tyoes of caches almost as must as I enjoy making them. -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  8. quote:Originally posted by IBcrashen:That file has 100 caches in it. Are you using the newest version of Easygps to open the gpx file? Get 1.2.2 from http://www.easygps.com/latest.asp http://www.mngca.org That was it! The file linked on the GC.com links page to EasyGPS for Geocaching is NOT the most recent. I loaded the most recent and it worked like a charm. Thanx! -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  9. Short version: I setup my pocket queries to send me .zip files. What I get has an ebook with 100 caches in it (the correct number) and the _attached_ GPX file only has 51 caches in it. I only found this out after trying to use GPX Spinner and noticing the resultant files after spinning did not the the same number of caches with them. For the hardcore problem solvers, here is the .zip (of a GPX file) from the GPX spinner site: http://www.gpxspinner.com/files/3855-spin.zip which has the 51 cache waypoints, and here is the .htm file generated from the attached ebook: http://www.gpxspinner.com/caches/3855/index.htm Which clearly shows 100 caches Help! -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  10. For us poor slobs who have PDA's with limited memory, we thank you for letting us ditch mobipocket! I used to use AvantGo as well, but those preview channels irked me. I now swear by Plucker. Thanx! -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  11. I am away from home staying at my mother in laws and was given permission to go geocaching before dinner. I managed to rack up 10 in just over three hours. Driving through downtown Milwaukee is really easy on Thankgiving day -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  12. One cold night in dec '01 I saw a little blurb on afternoon TV about a story they were going to run about geocaching later that day. (I never did see the story) I jumped online, got really jazzed when the nearest cache was 1.3 mi away. I scooped up my 1.5 year old daughter went out and found it. I haven't looked back since and I should easy hit 300 by my one year anniversary (270 as of today) My 2.34 year old daughter has a limited vocabulary, but you can bet for sure it includes the word 'cache'. Yes, there >500 caches within 100 miles of me, and if I was a bachelor, I would be over 1000 now. My name is Mark, and I am a geocacher. -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  13. I am tripping home (central MI to Southern WI)this weekend with my 2 year duaghter. The trip take about 6 hours and I am looking for good easy caches that are very close to I80 (IN border to I-39) and I-39 (I-80 to rockford) Any suggestions? Thanx! -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  14. A man/female couple decided to take shots of their private areas with my disposable camera in one of my caches. I Took the camera to the local photo shop, got it back and went through the pics (first time) with my wife looking over my shoulder. She was a little wierded out by it. The picture were not very flatering. Except one... -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  15. I tried the pocket query, and it never worked. I used to (and still do sometimes) use geoclipper. I have started using Avantgo for big (>20 cache) trips. I simple setup a custom channel and have it go to a 'search' page that I have got the exact URL for. A 2-deep page (what you need for the detail pages) with 25 cache listings sucks up about 200 K of memory, which was small enough for me. Sure there is a lot of blank space, but it is a lot faster than geoclipping 25 cache pages. -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.

My wife has a small part time job that funds our recreational activities. Her portion all goes to scrapbooking, mine goes to gas and supplies for geocaching. I just might do something like that over here in the jackson area... -Doc -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  18. Thanx, I found this on my map, and have it marked. I have also asked for official 'permission' to stop by. Thanx all for your help! -D.O. quote:Originally posted by Mother Gootz:You might try this address: Groundspeak 15600 NE 8th Street, Suite B1 Bellevue, WA 98008 It's where to send subscriptions, should be the right address. -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  19. I live in Michigan but will be in the Seattle area for a week starting this saturday. I have allready laid out a map with 75 caches that I hope to knock off in that time, but what I REALLY want is a picture of me in front of the office window with the big Goecaching (or is it Groundspeak?) logo on it where the Groundspeak world headquarters are. Does anyone know where I could find it? Please feel free to email me directly if you do not want to post it here. Thanx!! -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  20. We would love to come down from Jackson, MI to join you. I have been looking for an excuse to start caching south... -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  21. Unless you delete everyones logs, people will find out your little joke. Also, I would be very suspicious of someone saying there was a 100 bill in a cache. Who the heck has that kind of money? Go with $10 or $20. Much more believable. -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
  22. I was planning on doing a 120 mile round trip geocaching day with my 2 year old daughter, but the forcast was too rainy. We decided to stay in town and hike around downtown searching for markers. In about an hour we had logged 4 of them. Obviously, the numebr of logged BM finds could be much greater than some peoples 'normal' caches. What are there, 700,000? -Doc Ott 4 BM's, 79 caches -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.

  24. I leave a little yellow rubber stopper that says 'Doc Ott Stopped here' and the date. It's cheesy, I know. -Doc Ott A day without thermonuclear fusion is like a day without sunshine.
