  1. The cache wants you to find a special fountain, read the plaque, use the numbers on the plaque to find bearing and distance. The actual cache cooridinates are in Lake Erie. I think I need to set a waypoint and then use that waypoint with the directions that you gave me. Project the waypoint and proceed to the cache. Thanks for the manual help. I should probably put that manual in my caching bag.
  2. Hey everyone, I have an etrex venture HC. A cache requires I set a bearing from a certain spot and then travel that bearing many feet...I think around 1000. I don't know how to set a bearing, there might be buildings in the way if I'm doing it right. Can I project a mark? I'm not sure how to do this. Thanks for any help.
  3. I think I'm a newbie with 184 finds. I depend highly on posts and clues. I couldn't find my way out of a paper bag. My sense of direction is HORRIBLE. I am trying to get better with Geocaching. It's really helping me get to know the areas around where I live. If I'm having a hard time finding a cache, which is alot of the time, I stop paying attention to the GPS, step back and look for good "spots". With that being said, I've stepped on caches, I've walked just below a cache. The great part of caching is that you get better and your geo-senses get keener. I was not good at the beginning, but I'm getting better.
  4. I really appreciate the help with all the input. I've looked over the maps. I like to use my gps units to their fullest potential, but in this case, I may skip it. I don't get to go geocaching as much as I want. When I do get to go, I try and do easy ones, not much hiking, I don't really have the time. I want to be a super cacher one day. I want to be able to scale tall buildings and rock climb to the highest peaks by doing flips, writing in logs all the way, but let me tell you, that ain't going to happen. Anyway, my units do a great job for what I need, so I'm just going to enjoy caching this way for awhile. If someday I do become a "super-cacher", I'll let you guys know.
  5. I think I'm asking the wrong question. How do the maps help my Venture? What does it help me see? Topography? Trails? When you talk about selecting maps, I rarely leave Ohio, Do you think an Ohio map would fit on a Venture? Half Ohio?
  6. Where does that leave me? I can choose different tiles, less detail, might fit into my limited mb? I am still lost.
  7. I've been hunting around for maps for my garmin venture. I don't really understand how to use/install them. I know some are free and some are not. Can someone point me in the right direcion? I did some searching, but the subject is broad and I'm having trouble narrowing it down.
  8. We getting ready for a 4 night trip to Chicago by Amtrak (from Ohio). Any last minute advice? (Getting around and so on...not "don't talk to strangers" or "a peep show is not for looking early at Christmas presents")
  9. My wife made reservations at the Wyndham(?), I think it's on St. Clair. The water tower is close by I think. We live in the country so this is going to be very eye opening for everyone. We've gone to Cleveland and Toledo, but this is a whole other ball game. We're a little nervous, but we've heard great things.
  10. When I started there used to a family. Did that stick man leave his family in the woods?
  11. This year's family vacation is to travel by train from Sandusky Ohio to the great city of Chicago. I want to do some caches while we're there. I am coming in on Amtrak (never traveled by train before). We're staying for 4 nights, Monday through Friday, leaving Friday late. Any information about caching/traveling in Chicago or taking Amtrak would be very helpful. Won't be going until June 26th. I'm a premium member, have yet to get through the "route" planning. I have a Garmin nuvi and Garmin Etrex, both will be loaded with caches from pocket queries. Thanks for any help.
  12. Putting it back on the shelf is much cheaper. I just need to be careful with the Nuvi. The next step for me would be some sort of smart phone and data plan that I can't afford. It will have to wait. Too bad, the freebie was so cool to find. It was like the reverse of Antiques Roadshow.
  13. I think this Palm is going to back to the closet where I found it. I have windows 7 64 bit. I haven't found a way to get "Hotsync" to work. I've installed everything, but Windows 7 doesn't like it. I'm just going to back to what I was doing with the Nuvi. It will have to be brave and not stay in the truck. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate you taking the time. Rick
  14. Yes, sorry. I'd like to leave the nuvi in the truck, and take the free palm outside for paperless. If I go geocaching though, I'd have to load the nuvi, the palm, and the handheld venture before I left the house. That sounds like a lot of work. I was just trying to get this freebie to work, but it may not be worth it. In any case, how do I get the caches on to the Palm Pilot?
  15. I found this old Palm Pilot z22 at work. It was in this closet and not even opened. No one uses them anymore. My boss told me I could use it until someone higher up decides to come looking for it. They won't be coming. They're busy with their own stuff. Right now it's mine. I normally use GSAK, POILoader, my venture and a Garmin Nuvi. Someone told me a palm pilot would be better outside, since my Nuvi was more expensive. I could leave the NUVI in the truck/van and then take the pilot out. Here's the real problem. I have yet to buy GSAK, which I do need to buy. Is there a way to get the caches from GSAK to the Palm Pilot without buying another program? Thanks, Rick
  16. I've been reevaluating the way I do things in my life. The way I do things at work (teach art). The way I do things at home. (chores). I'm looking for better ways to do things. The only way to find out if I'm geocaching "the right way" or "the best way" is to ask other cachers. One would argue, "there is no right way" or "if it's not broke, then don't fix it". I don't want to fix it, I just want to do it better. I have a Garmin Nuvi 260w and an etrex venture HC. I don't want to buy any new equipment. I want to be paperless. Here is what I do, take and look and see if I could do it "better". I make a pocket query of about 490 caches in about a 200 mile radius. I'm never sure what direction I'm going so I like the options, even though I usually only get one or two caches at a time. I download the query to my computer and use GSAK. First I delete all the waypoints in GSAK and then open the new query to make sure I get the latest logs and info. I then use POILoader to delete all my POIs, then use the new info from GSAK to transfer it to the nuvi. I then delete all the waypoints/caches on the Venture. I use GSAK to load all those new waypoints, the same as the nuvi, to the venture. The venture is an OK GPS, but it's not very accurate especially in tree cover. I rely heavily on hints and previous logs. What do you think? Thanks, Rick
  17. What web-sites would you recommend I watch for the latest technology? The newest garmins, the rising gps companies, etc
  18. Cachers, After 58 finds I'm starting to realize geocaching is not an exact science. Or is it? Maybe I have poor equipment? My etrex venture gets me close enough but I rely heavily on hints and past posts to find the cache. It would seem like that a gps is a gps and they should all work the same. The same coordinates shouldn't change. I've been close to the cache but my GPS says I have another 35 feet. Most of the time it's closer than that. Is this how it's supposed to be? Is Geocaching not an exact science? Thanks, Rick
  19. My etrex venture has been acting funny, not very accurate. I was wondering if it would make a difference when I turned it on. I usually turn it on while driving to the cache. I use a nuvi to get me close and then I use the venture. Do you think it makes a difference when you turn it on? Is it better to set it still and turn it on or is it ok to turn it on while moving? A target standing still is much easier to hit, I thought it would be the same for a GPS. Thanks, Rick
  20. I was doing some caches with the family. We were driving along lake Erie. I see a cache, or something, in Lake Erie. I thought that was pretty original. Then I started thinking about all the crazy places on Earth someone could put a cache. So even though I'll probably never be able to go to these caches, where some crazy caches? What some dangerous caches? Rick
  21. I'm pretty new to the geocache scene. When I report my logs I like to write more than "thanks". I talked to a friend of mine. He has a few hides. He likes getting reports, but sometimes gets sick of them. Same thing and over and over. Ho Hum. Just wondering what everyone else thinks....
  22. I'm not sure how to change that setting. It's not under The Find section, POI menu, Geochache menu or waypoint. I guess I'll have to keep trying different things.
  23. Hi Everyone, I am pretty new at all of this. I've been spending alot of time trying to go paperless. I want to be able to get into the car with the kids, let them go potty about 50 times, drive to a near by city/town and go caching. As far as I can tell, on the nuvi it will only show about 50 of the closest caches, even with a 4G kingston sdhc card. If I call up a nearby city and zoom in really close, I can see the little package icons, so they are there, I think. When I drive to the town those POIs I think will pop up. I used POILoader to up load about 500 POIs to both the Nuvi and the Venture. The venture only shows about 50 POIs. Where are the rest of the 450? I was hoping to have a big list of POIs on my venture, but so far that hasn't happened. How can I do this? I want the list on the Nuvi and the Venture to match. Thanks for the help. Rick
  24. With the help of the great moderators here, I've been able to download files to my nuvi. The list that was compiled by GSAK was about 500. There are only about 40 or so on the nuvi, but I don't have an SD card for it. I used POI loader with my etrex Venture but I don't know how many, I didn't count them yet. My hope is that the NUVI 260w will hold more with an SD card. Before I go out and buy one, will that increase the POIs or are they on the Nuvi and I just don't know where? Also, with the venture HC, how many is that going to hold and where? In caches? In waypoints? The garmin manuals didn't really give me very many details. I don't know how to delete a find from my Nuvi , do I need to reload a new search, excluding the ones I find? I would have posted this in the technology section, but I couldn't find my way out of a paper bag with my nuvi. Unfortunately, I'm using these awesome searching skills to geocache. Rick
