  1. Another reason to do regular cache maintenance. If you own caches, go check on them at least monthly. Put them back where YOU wanted them if they are moved. Don't wait for something to show up in the logs about it being in the wrong place or running out of space on a log sheet, etc.

Case in point...I have a cache that I took over from someone else. I saw "found" logs on them and went to check on it the other day when I was out that way to refill some swag and check the log. My son and I looked all over for it and it was NOT where it originally was. I was going to fix up another container and take it out there. A couple of days ago, I got another "found" log. So now, I'm REALLY going to have to go expand my search and find out where it has migrated so I can put it back in its original location.

One other thing to consider...not everyone's GPSr is completely accurate down to a couple of feet. If you find a cache and your GPS is telling you that it should be 20-30' over, don't move it without checking with the CO first. One or the other of you could have been off the mark by quite a bit.

  2. I usually treat them as any other tradeable (is that a word?) SWAG. It's a signature item left by a previous cacher, sort of like a wooden nickel or other trinket. The difference is that you can "collect" them online as well and can even trade out with other cachers around the globe.

Geocoins and Travel Bugs are meant to travel from cache to cache. These can be taken from a cache and you don't necessarily have to replace them with something else. Just remember - ALWAYS log coins and tags OUT of one cache and IN to another cache when you drop it somewhere else.

  3. Has any group of geocachers adopted a section of highway and done regular cleanups as CITO events? I brought this up the other day at one of our gathers and had some interest. In Texas, you can adopt a section of highway at least 2 miles long and you need to hold at least 4 cleanups per year and you adopt for a 2 year period. That is at least 8 CITO events and we might take turns hosting them (and hiding caches along the way).

I was just curious if anyone had tried it - and how it went (or is going). :P

  4. 1. I see that you get an icon on your Found list for Benchmarks, but they don't count toward your Found count. Why?

    2. Why don't they show up on the map - even when you are on that particular benchmark's page and click the map link?

    3. Why can't you run a Pocket Query to load them into your GPS/Phone?

It seems semi-integrated into Geocaching.com, but still it's not easy to see them without doing separate searches - just like Waymarking. It's frustrating and not convenient.

  5. That looks good! I doubt they get much more portable, do they? I'm currently overloading my carabiner with my GPS, a pen for BYOPs, and now a little doggie bag dispenser based on BlueDeuce's suggestion of plastic bags in a film canister. I'm probably all set now unless somebody can tell me of a stick/weed puller/little claw that I could attach to my carabiner...

Walmart (and I'm sure other stores) have a grabber called a "Gopher" for about $9.99 in the "As Seen on TV" section. It folds in half and is actually very light weight. It helps when picking up trash, reaching caches in high places or ones in dark, creepy places where you'd rather not stick your hand - like a hollow log with the roof covered in Daddy Long-legs spiders.

  6. I have a cache at our church. It's a small church and just about everyone knows I'm a Geocacher. I asked the Pastor and a few of the Elders for permission to hide on there in the woods surrounding the property. It's a personal cache and is not filled with religious propaganda, and I stated that in the notes to the Reviewer when I posted the cache.

I know some people don't like caches at churches, but don't let that stop you. You just can't please everyone. I personally don't care for McDonald's, so I just pass them on by. I don't bad-mouth them though-it's just a wasted effort. It's a choice to be crabby about things and I think some people get off on it.

Place your cache as long as you have permission and you let several folks in the congregation know it's there so they won't be upset if someone is searching the grounds. I think it's a great group activity for the youth!

  7. Academy had it in the hunting section. There was duct tape in the camping section, but they didn't have the camo one there. Walmart has it, but it's the digitized one.

I found a good paint at the dollar store called "Suede", which was about the same color as some of the sandy top soil around here. A really good alternative to duct tape. It's a flat finish that could actually look like suede and blends in very well with a few leaves scattered over the top.

  8. Alright, people - CHILL!!! The Like button is just an added feature for that that WANT to use it. No one is forcing you to use it. For those of us that use Facebook, it's an added bonus. If you don't use Facebook, it's not holding you back. All it does it put a link to the cache on your profile. Just a simple little thing, but cool.

I don't sit here and gripe about GS partnering up with AT&T just because they developed an iPhone app. I have a Droid. It's just something that is offered that I won't take advantage of.

I'd like to hear what you all LIKE about the new features.

  10. Geez, it seems like there are a lot of Grumpy Gus' on this board! I LOVE the new "Like" feature. Many of my geocaching buddies are on Facebook. It's a good way to connect and help each other and talk about the caches we really like. This just makes it easier. If you don't like the feature...just don't use it. I think it's awesome!

  11. My problem is - I like to look up caches on the fly. If I'm at a lunch break (or on errands), I get this thought..."I wonder if there are any quick caches around here." That's when pre-planning and pre-loading doesn't work too well for me. I've got a habit of picking up my Droid and caching on a whim.

You know...if "the app that shall not be named" can easily pull info off the geocaching website, seems like it'd be easy for there to be an "official" app that does the same thing, but with the GC logo all over it. I still say they ought to release what they have and tweak it as it goes and as they get comments on it. If it was far enough along to mention it a good while back, then I'm sure it's far enough along to release the beta version. WHAT is the hold up??? :)

  12. This official app has been announced a good while back. What is the status? I think "Coming Soon" has come and gone. Can't y'all release what you have and then issue Updates on a regular basis until it's complete as most of the apps in the Market do? It sure would cut down on the "What's the best app to use on my Droid?" question!

  13. 385 posts on this one topic?! Can we STOP and move on to other things already? Rather you like it or don't like it...MOVE ON!!!!! Enough is Enough. Everyone has their minds made up one way or the other and the back and forth is very tiresome.

This is supposed to be a FUN sport!

  14. I'm sure I'll get a little flack for this, but this is meant to be a game that brings about personal satisfaction, right? It's meant to be fun, correct?

If you're in a situation where you see the cache and there's no doubt about it that THAT is the cache, I don't see where it's so bad that you log the find. It's called geocaching, not geosigning. I've found a cache were the log was a soaked wad of goo and completely un-signable. It doesn't mean that I didn't find it. IMHO, do whatever makes you happy and lets you sleep in peace at night.

Now, if you're in a race or challenge, the rules might be a little different and more strict.

  15. Very nice, helpful info that you gave out. I like seeing courtesy to new folks.

I recently asked our Parks Director if I could hide caches in the parks and he said it'd be fine. If the Director has any smarts about him/her, they will know that geocaching doesn't disturb anything, brings new visitors to the area that might not have come otherwise and many cachers practice Cache In Trash Out. Should be a no-brainer for them.

    BTW...I love your tag line!
