  1. Remember when the geocache maps would show one icon as a cluster of caches when you zoomed out to a certain point? I wish we could do that with the TB maps. I'd also like to see that for the logs too. I used to like to follow the travels of TB's through both the maps and the logs. Now it's just depressing. There is nothing interesting about wading through the hundreds of micros a CACHER has found within three miles of his home. This is not about the TB at all. If you could opt to collapse all the "took it to" logs by one cacher within a certain distance, that would make it easier. Any change would have to come from this direction, since I'm sure the vast majority of people doing the mindless visiting never read the forums, and probably don't even read the cache pages to see what their clutter looks like.
  2. Yeah, junk! My explorist 500 just died... Oh wait, I've been using it for 6 years with about 4000 caches found. So maybe that's not so bad. I went looking for something to replace it and ended up buying... another explorist 500 off e-bay for $82.00! I'll let you know how it turns out.
  3. i think it used to be that you had to mark a cache as found and then go back and give it a favorite point. Easy to forget if you're trying to get all your logging done. I wouldn't really mind if someone pointed out to me that I'd done that.
  4. I will! Over the years I have picked up broken containers with a long history of problems with with no response from the owner and written a NA log. Every time I've done that the cache has been archived. I've also picked up film can throw downs left in obvious spots when the original cache was clearly intended to be something special in some way. NA logs that always get the attention of a reviewer. I know some people disapprove of this, but I believe I am being a good custodian of the game.
  5. How fast is your Maserati? I don't know. I lost my license... I understand that some of the features of the new app are aimed at teaching folks who are not going to go to the website and read cache pages. I really only started using the old app a short time ago, and that was just when I was too lazy to download caches into my magellan. So going back to the old way will just be a matter of breaking a relatively new bad habit.
  6. Yes that is good news. I'm trying to imagine how that chime is ever useful to anyone, but i can't see it. I hope there is also a way to disable videos, which I still occasionally start by accident. Incredible waste of battery. Trying to use the app on my old iphone 4s I only get about 20 minutes if I leave it on and accidentally run a video while trying to find the info I really need. This severely limits my caching day if I forget my magellan explorist 500, as I did on my current trip to Maryland and New Jersey. keep having to go back to the truck to charge my phone... I have generally been supportive of HQ's new innovations over the years, but the new app just leaves me scratching my head. Ah, well, back in the day I was totally dependent on printed paper cache pages when I went on road trips, so I guess I can't complain (but sometimes I still do) any oldtimers get that reference?
  7. I still use my magellan explorist 500 as my main geocaching tool. I, too, was shocked at how fast the new app ran down my battery. Also I found the app hard to navigate and I hate that annoying chime when you get within a certain distance of the cache. "The features members wanted." I tried the app to see how I liked it. I liked the old one much better. Now I'll just use it to read past logs when I'm stuck.
  8. not quite. The response was predictable because that was the majority opinion. I'm sure of it. Even though I don't have any evidence to back it up... (Oh, wait, we have something in common!) As for that last sentence, I don't even know what that means. So I have no pithy retort.
  9. i voted for reactivation because it seemed like the only reasonable choice. Whether or not I'll ever get out there and find it did not enter into the decision.
  10. I have one that's camo taped to a branch over a creek that can only be reached by canoe. The top sticks out at the end of the branch so you don't have to remove the container. A couple of others taped to sticks stuck into hollows in trees.
  11. I generally steer clear of caches near homeless camps, out of respect for the privacy of the residents. twice, however, I have had a resident call out to me and, with a smile, point to where the cache was.
  12. Heh... not saying that I disagree with you but many who are not in the game say it's just the opposite, we walk TOWARD stupid plastic containers
  13. Any GPS unit you buy will work just fine. Go to Best Buy, REI, Sports Authority, just about any tech or outdoor store. I suggest going in person instead of looking online so you can actually pick one up and see how it feels. You will get LOTS of discussion on what's best but really, for a kid just get one of the cheaper models and see if that peaks his interest. (I'm still using a Magellin ExPlorist 500 that's more than 10 years old and I can't find any reason to get a new one) oops... Best Buy might not stock hand helds anymore. REI and Cabela's have them.
  14. I did travel nursing for awhile. 13 week contracts gave me time to find a lot of nice parks and trails full of caches.
  15. True this. I was going to say that terrain rating varies regionally. Some caches in Long Island rated at 4 would be 2 or 2.5 in Colorado or Arizona where strenuous hiking is part of many people's daily lifestyle. 3 to 4 sounds about right for yours.
  16. I would have deleted that log immediately and then emailed the cacher explaining that you are not supposed to "help" others with explicit spoilers. I've seen logs like that from time to time around my area. "It's in the wall, third rock from the corner!" It's always beginners and I assume they just downloaded a few caches on their phone and don't really know anything about the game... As for not getting out there, I've been feeling it too. 2016 was my lowest find count in eleven years, and December was my first month ever with not a single find. Part of it is the drudgery of sorting through the green slime on the maps to find something good, but that's another thread...
  17. Or the neighbors might have hired a Private Investigator to find out why people are hanging out in the area
  18. Just want to say that this is one of the most interesting and informative threads I've seen here in a long time. I bet there are plenty like me who haven't been active contributors but who appreciate all those who have added useful thoughts and strategies...
  19. Not sure what maps you're talking about. I just did a search on some bookmark lists around various parts of the country, and the maps are the same as they have been for years. The maps on my GPS are not Groundspeak maps. I use an Explorist 500 and the maps are from magellan. The maps on my iphone are from the Groundspeak app and they work just fine too.
  20. Great story! I will vote for either putting it back and re-activating it OR keeping it archived and display it at HQ. I absolutely HATE the idea of awarding the APE icon for anything other than finding an original APE cache in its original location.
  21. I have a couple like that in LV. I get out there every couple of years and try to find previous dnf's. on this one I foolishly left a "needs archive" note as well. Then people kept finding it so when I went back two years later I looked again. It was a very clever "regular" sized cache that still took me 20 minutes to find. That taught me a lesson!
  22. great idea! my dumpster dnf was 9/9/05. If it's still around in two years, maybe we'll revive this thread. If we remember! ...so I waited an extra year or so and went back for it today. it's been through some rough times but I believe the original container is still there,n now placed in a plastic bag. A recent finder did a nice job of cleaning it up. So, my new record is: 11 years and two months! I'll have one more chance on a tough multi if I ever get up to Boston again.
  23. This. There's really nothing more to be said.
