  1. My routine for geocaching is to drive to the proximity of the cache, then change the routing to direct routing, and change the screen to compass view.

(Back out of map view to main menu, select "Where to", select "change routing to direct", backout to main menu and select compass view)

The Oregon 600 is so customizable with profiles, shortcuts, programmable buttons.

Whatis the best method to either do this automatically - or with the push of a single button?

  2. #1 already happens.

Another way to remove the NM flag is to manually edit the attributes.

I like to say number two also happens. It happens a lot...

I could see it if it was a new user that uses "enable cache" instead of OM. But the CO has been geocaching for just over 8 years, I'm kinda surprised.

Ha!! All I can say is the last time I tried it, it did NOT clear the NM attribute. Maybe that cache had 2 logged NM logs or something, or I did it before the feature was implemented. I'll have to test it now,so I can remove my red face!~!
  3. <FEATURE> When the CO posts a log for owner maintenance, the system:

    1) Automatically clears the "Needs Maintenance" attribute (if set) or

    2) Has a check box that asks if the attribute should be cleared.

  4. So how long do you think it would take to do this run? And is there any thing between the start to the finish? I would probably be happy just hike around the aliens head.

Stu & Noni said they did it in 14 hours 18 minutes.

They also said to have a full tank of gas, water, etc 'cuz there nuttin' around. :(

  5.

Where is this power trail at Photom?

    Nevada - stick these coords in Google Earth: N 37° 41.647 W 115° 50.004

You will see that, in addition to the power trail, there is a side set of caches that make a picture of an Alien Head on the map.

From Merced - it's about 275 miles as the crow files.

  6. I decided that since I only needed about 127 caches to get me to that 1000 mark, I'd start hunting again. After today, I need 3 less. I'll try to get something new out soon also.

Hey Brute! I'm meeting Bill of Green Achers (now known as BOGA) in Turlock tomorrow. Want to tag along? We can have some ice cream with Bill and then find a few more...1,000 here you come.... :(

I can pick you up around 2:30 pm...

  7.

Welcome aboard! There is a local caching group down there in your area. we call them MAC they are the Merced Area Cachers. Be careful though because their ring leader Photom is a very shady character! ;)

In all seriousness they are a good group of people that will most likely help you out in any way possible.

    HEY!! I resemble that remark!

Indeed, Markca - welcome aboard. The forum isn't as active as it once was - seems as though folks have tended to migrate to Facebook, along with 500 million others.

  9. Hi everyone! I have a quick question...I'm approaching cache #1000 and would like to plan a really neat cache for that milestone...any recommendations? For #500 I did National Treasure...not sure if anything can beat that! Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks!

If you can take a trip - go to Folsom at night for "Nocturnal Immersion." Take some friends!! :anibad:

  10. Hi everyone. We've been gone for a while, but have the bug once again. Amazing when I logged in and saw my profile picture, etc. Eight years ago! I'm not sure who we'd know on here anymore, but I noticed Ron is back at it.

Using the Android app "GeOrg" and it makes it SOOOOOO easy. Long gone are the days of punching in coordinates or even looking at the site much! It's all there!

Hope to get in contact with friends from the past as well as new ones!

One advantage is all the caches around me are new to us!!!!

    Welcome back!!

  11. What should be done when you find that some one is loging finds but is not signing the log? ;)

It's up to you of course, but we had a rash of that when some folks from SoCal attended Geowoodstock a couple years back. Seems like the group that actually found some caches was a small subset of those who logged them.

Here's what some of us did:

    1) Asked them to describe the container or something significant about the cache.

If they didn't reply, or gave some lame excuse like, "I found so many that day, I don't remember anything" or some even replied "Just delete my find."

    We deleted the logs.

    2) Others of our group just retrieved the logs and deleted any finders whose signature wasn't on it.

    3) And others just ignored it.

  12. Hi All...

Most of you here I suspect I don't know, but I am getting back into using my gps a bit so will hit these forums now and again.

If you look back at the first page of this thread you will see the tick magnet and I am the second poster...Eureka !

This was way back in May of 2002 and now almost 8 years later I'm breaking out the old yellow eTrex and starting to work with maps again. Geocaching will be part of that, but I'm at the moment figuring out again how to load coords into an Excel spreadsheet and then into the eTrex for export to Delorme Topo4 and later Topo7 when it arrives in a week or so.

Anyway, longwinded, but I could use some help in terms of programs to use to do all this. I remember a smiley face being associated with one of them....but that's about it.

Any help for an oldtimer ? Thanks.

    Hey Ron,

Seems like you are taking the long road around using excel and all that.

I'd take a peek at using GSAK - it's dynamite!

BTW - welcome back! I've been doin' this since 2004 and have enjoyed finding at least 26 of your caches! :(

OMG. :D There is life on the forum!

There's not much life on the forum! Has everyone totally migrated to facebook or what?

We have a dilemma - S'Mores and Snores!

I sent an email about our annual Spring camp-out and received very little response.

On the one hand, it would be a shame not to have our 5th annual camping event.

On the other, it would be a waste of time to plan and execute it and no one comes.

So - what's everyone think? Should we do it or not?

    All suggestions welcome. :D:D

ANY MORE THOUGHT'S ON THIS SUBJECT?

Now thinking later in May - maybe the 21st - 23rd. Does that work for anyone?

  16. It was probably around 4:30pm when we were told to leave. We had been out there for a couple hours, and we talked to the first guard about 2pm. It was slightly overcast, but it wasn't late, and they knew exactly why we were there. I don't know, I think I was rather annoyed by their rudeness than what they said.

Oh, and the first guard did say that they will ask people to leave at night if they're out geocaching due to the recent string of thefts out there, but he was talking about dark time, since he recently caught a group out there at 11:30pm.

I met with the head guy at Castle. We had a nice lunch and I showed him a couple cache locations.

I don't know where he's been living, but he'd never even heard of geocaching. But he does think his 12-year-old would like to go sometime.

    The results?

    1. Caching is legal as Castle but there may be some concerns with some of the placements.

    2. Unlike what many people think, Castle is a live operational airport.

    3. If the security folks were rude to anyone, they apologize.

    4. Security should not be telling folks to leave, unless they were doing something they should not be doing.

    5. There has been a serious problem with theft at Castle, so they are in a state of heightened security.

Having said all that - we are planning to get together again to review more details.

Local cachers may be asked to brief or train the security contractors.

Some caches on the "airport side" of the base - if there are any, may need to be removed.

Once completed, I'll notify y'all and the reviewers of the results. ;)

Hello Bill. Long time no see or hear. What the heck have you been doing since you have not been doing much caching? You just missed on great event. the 2nd Annual Winter Formal was a blast. Sorry not to see you there. Well maybe, just maybe, you will see fit to come to the 5th annual Snores and Smores event.

    Bill? Who's Bill? :D

I'll ask the Merced County Spokesperson and post the answer here, stay tuned. :lostsignal:
