  1. I'm going to Lake Havasu City over Valentines weekend, as part of the Winter Blast. Most of the time we will be doing (legal) pyrotechnic stuff BUT I always try to get in a few caches. I've downloaded the local caches, and wonder if anyone wants to recommend a 'must do' cache in the area? We're driving a Honda minivan so our offroad capability is limited.... And, most of the day is spent at Sara Park, so I am looking for caches within 10 miles of LHC. Thanks in advance! Travieso
  2. How do you transfer waypoints from gsak to mapsource? I am not sure I understand your question....Here is how I do it: I download my pocket inquiries, unzip them, and them open them into a database in GSAK. I sort, filter, whatever, then save it as a Palm file (I think it's *.pdb). I then send the waypoints to my Garmin GPS, and then I plug in the Palm Pilot and do a hot sync. At that point I have the waypoints on the GPS and the waypoint and description on the palm pilot. I can also save the waypoints as a mapsource file, and then it automatically opens to the Mapsource map. It sounds like a big process, but I get pretty quick at it. Hope this helps.
  3. We got into Paperless with a Sony Clie SJ20. Monochromatic screen means extended battery life! Spent about $35-$50 (bought several); using GSAK to manage the pocket queries, and MapSource to map and track stuff. After shuffling papers, it is a great way to go. Before we go camping, or on any sort of excursion, I run a few pocket queries, and load up the GPS and the Clie with waypoints and info. I love it!
  4. I'm wondering if there's a trick here: I try to email cachers who move my TB, or logged finds, and I am not able to do so consistently. I am able to find other players, and pull up the email screen. What is missing is the cursor to allow me to type. Sometimes I have found that if I log out, shut down, and restart, I am then able to send email. Or, I do it successfully from work. At home I am using Opera as my browser, at work I use Internet Explorer. Opera has a setting which allows it to identified as IE, and I have it set at that setting. Any ideas? Travieso
  5. I've just completed my first totally paperless (and successful) cache hunt. I've done a few pocket queries for my area, and I'm using a Sony Clie sj20 + Etrex Legend to get it done. How do I set up separate databases? I commute a lot, and want to be able to select a database (San Jose, CA for example) and search separately from, say, Hollister. This would allow me to use the GSAK search (nearest caches) function without cycling through all the records. I set up different cities as categories on the PDA, but it still searches through all entries. Ideas? Also, is there any way to get the info from the PDA to my GPSr? I can store thousands of entries on the PDA, only 500 on the GPSr. Just wondering.... This is my 4th month of geocaching, and I can see that paperless is the way to go! Thanks for any suggestions. 6. Hi all, I have been geocaching for about 3 months now. I am wondering if I'm doing things the best way... before I go somewhere, I do a search by zip code. I print out the pages for each cache of interest, and if necessary a corresponding map. I usually don't mess with downloading the waypoints, and enter them manually. So I take a file folder of printouts and my etrex Legend. Now, I am looking at getting a laptop computer for other reasons. I am wondering if I can integrate it into geocaching? Can I download the complete page of info, and not just the waypoints? Am I getting all I can out of my etrex? I tried downloading waypoints, and the only info I can transfer is the actual waypoint (gchn8w, for example) and no corresponding info. My goal: I would love to be able to download the complete info about a waypoint, including hints, and have it stored on the laptop. Can this be done? How do other people get from their desktop to the field with the important info needed to find a cache? thanks for any suggestions, Allen
  7. I am preparing to hide my first cache, and I have 2 questions..... ?? Where do you get those cool roll up logs for microcaches? Is there a form I can print and copy? ??make a rock?? I am experimenting with making my own fake rocks, with a plastic screw cap container embedded inside. (it's curing right now!) Anyone out there have any experience with this? that's it! Got my GPS for my birthday, and have sucked the whole family into it.
