  1. There are a few reasons why other sites may be much more appealing than over here. For a start, there are no boards; one forum, with all the threads, over all the topics mixed up. Secondly, only two pages of topics come up; with all the older ones vanished and censored for no one to see - this is not good at all; I like to see older threads for reference - I understand this is probably what Groundspeak does automatically, and not the leaders of this UK board, but still, I know it is something several people don't like. And lastly, of the people that do post over here, it is less likely they have much in common - they are all over the country. Whilst with regional forums, everyone has something in common - living in the area, with the same caches, and the same news and gossip. The one thing I do like about these forums is that you can keep in contact with the wider national community; but the GAGB forums are equally good for that too. I'm the current administrator on the CacheWalkerforums - home to a caching group spread across Gloucestershire/Warwickshire/Worcestershire/Oxfordshire, and we keep our group going strong by holding pub events with a pre-event walk every 3-4 months; which always seem popular. Our group is 5 years old in September, but anyone can join our forum (it's not necessarily regional at all)and join in with the general Geocaching discussion - I have too noticed only a small fraction of members joining in recently; down from many who did use to post. But then again most of our members are elsewhere for Mega's etc. As you said drsolly, I blame this all on Facebook! I don't do, and don't like Facebook for Geocaching groups; thus I have declined several offers to join some. Facebook is for connecting with friends, and although Geocaching groups on FB do that, forums can too and they are much better for the purpose in my view. I don't like the Facebook group interface at all, and so it will always be forums for Geocaching for me
  2. There is already a group for Linconshire catchers Were you aware of this? Forum - Lincscachers.org.uk Facebook - Linconshire.Cachers
  3. Yes, I forgot to say I have one on my car too, but it has been logged only a few times in many months - I thought that it would have been logger much more frequently to be honest
  4. What a mystery Seems like a great cache in a cracking spot anyway though
  5. That's good - learn from your mistakes... you do learn a lot as you transform from a muggle into a cacher
  6. If I remember, I look out for them at events
  7. Yes! I was talking about this with walktall, one of the side events could be a group hike to the APE cache Better wait and see what Groundspeak say before getting any more ideas though

    Visiting Spain

Hi Love, I'll be visiting Barcelona around that time too Having been there before, I can recommend the trip up the funicular to the top of Tibidabo to log this vitual - the first in Spain - amazing up there! Barcelona - cache is named after the city, because you can see it all from GZ When we arrive later next month, these are all #1 on my To Do list: Montjuïc Stone (Mont Jovis)- Earthcache Gaudí's Crazy Ideas: Sagrada Familia Columns- Earthcache El tesoro del gran brujo- a Wherigo, which you could do while up on Tibidabo finding the one I previously recommended, Barcelona While in Malaga, if you're up for something extreme this one is good (a friend has found it) Memoria de Iván- but even I'm not for something that extreme. Have fun - are you going up as far north as Platja d' Aro, we've been there before, so I can certainly suggest some for you to do in that area Griff.
  9. Yes dogfort, I believe it will be held annually in a different country every year (or four years) depending on what Groundspeak think about the concept, having now seen one and how it operates. I would like to extend and my gratitude and thanks to Paul and the rest of the team for all their hard work - best event I've been to yet
  10. I don't delete their logs because I'm nice Though I agree the log should always be singed!!
  11. Just thought I would stir up further excitement and anticipation, as there is only a matter of hours before the event - 13 hours and 10 minutes until the Mega opens Even less if you're going to the Banbury flash mob like me Bring on 11 in 11
  12. Find a Wrighty series and that is what you get
  13. Thanks, I hadn't notice that one being published Marathon series, 26 miles, to do firstly next week, don't know when I'll be able to fit this one in, but don't live too far from Oxford, so shouldn't be a problem
  14. Talk about a controversial topic I have to admit to being on both sides of the argument, but mainly leaning towards the good old traditional caches in stunning and interesting locations. In my area, those are by no means dead - Wrighty, the best cache setter I know, hides wonderful big boxes in a location with a purpose. Find one of his caches, and you'll come home like you've found 100! For me, I always prefer quality over quantity! A good walk, in a nice spot, is all I need to have a perfect days caching. Having said this, I also agree with what drsolly said. There's nothing better than coming home from a long days walk, after finding loads of caches, to sit down with a warm cup of tea under a blanket writing logs and re-living the adventure. I love that feeling, most extreme I've done is also 50 caches In a day in about 3 inches of snow in the remote Wiltshire downs , with no civilization to be seen - feet were frozen the entire time, got a couple of DNFs but it was fun - at the end of the day it's finding caches that we all enjoy, and the more you find, the more enjoyment you get in the day Do I prefer this to quality Wrighty caches with the good walk and no micros - no, I don't, but it still plays a part in my caching life - I am of very competitive nature, so I love improving my stats! The quality caches always come first though.... As for events - a small event can never, ever beat the buzz and excitement of a Mega - thousands of people all in one place at one time for a reason - now, I think that's pretty special. Where else do you see that? I find it a bit Shocking how keehotee has called this weekends event against all recognition - how is celebrating Geocaching bad? They have a lot for stats lovers, I do see that, but they do too have plenty for the traditional cache lovers - including an event at the location of the UKs oldest cache - is that a quality one or what? If I had to pick between attending a mega or a smaller event? A mega, purely because they don't happen very often. Since joining in November 2010 and taking over the site in Febuary of this year, I have grown to know the inside story with small events. CacheWalker - see my footer for links to our forums - in 2007 eras before I began caching, a group of cachers joined to organise regular events with a pre-event group walk, in which all willing attendees tagged along chatting and socialising, picking up some new quality caches, before returning to a pub for the main event - I remember attending my first CacheWalker event back in 2011, they are like no other, completely the other side to the spectrum of a Mega event. If Megas took place every few months like CacheWalker events, then I would opt for the smaller one. Like in everything, there is change. A new bunch of people have began playing the game, and have made it what it is. I don't agree with Mega trails - I only do long trails like said above in areas I know are lovely - especially these ridiculous highway trails in USA - I don't see how that is Geocaching in any way at all, but I have to accept that that's what people have made it. We can watch people get thousands and thousands of finds a day, a week, a year - but we've got to remember that everyone plays the game differently - I will always go for quality over quantity, only quality number trails, and only quality Megas. As they say it's not about the numbers
  15. I think the team need an even bigger congratulations for all the planning and preparation that you've put into this, you're putting on one of the biggest events in the country for thousands of people, the young, the old, and families, to enjoy, and to celebrate the great hobby that is geocaching. So congrats from me on getting it all done successfully, now for the big day and event week, before it's all over - bet you'll all be a little sad about that So THANK YOU - sit back and watch the gratitudes pour in. 5 days to go!!
  16. Yes, thank you very much, although I will never be on it, they were always fun to read and check up on Thanks again
  17. Well all I can say is FANTASTIC!! When and where will the next Geolympix be? Are you secretly discussing it with other countries? When will it be announced?
  18. I enjoyed listening to that too When will we get the coins, also, it has passed early June now Do we pick them up at the main event?
  19. I was about to post something like this, but found that someone already did, so yes, that's my opinion justified - a 5/5 is a 5/5 to one but not to another - I don't think any D/T rating can ever be measured accurately, as everyone has a different take on caches and terrain...
