  1. Sorry to derail the conversation but this comment is incorrect. The concept of geocaching was created independent of any knowledge of letterboxing. It is, in essence, a sister activity - but more in the Luke and Leia sense of the word. Neither knew they were related until Darth Vader told them. Oh my word......he speaks!!! Yup, and he talks sense
  2. Well I could think of a few possible culprits around there!
  3. About time Morrisons ran that offer again! Thanks for the heads up.
  4. Not exactly, there was already a separately listed pub event organised, DSCB06. The reviewers just let it go, but changed the interpretation of the guidelines for all camping events that followed . Not always possible as this requires the cooperation of the campsite owner. Ahhh is that what it was - my memory fails me slightly .. it was more than a few events back. Most campsite owners I've found are ok with visitors onsite. As a rule of thumb, I work on the basis that if they are totally inflexible about it, then they are likely to be a bit tight on other stuff too and it's probably a good idea to source a different site. Hope we are having the Spires and Oxford camp next year Phillis Muddy Haters It won't be the same without them.
  5. I remember a camping event a few years back where it was deemed a bad idea for non-campers to be turning up at the campsite, mainly from a safety point of view, and the event was very nearly archived. Fortunately the event organisers were able to save the day by having a pub meet on the Sunday which was open to all. Problem solved. I have a feeling that is where all this stems from. It's much better for camping event organisers not to feel the need to organise something additional, a pub meet for instance, just so that the event can be open to all. It's extra work and means you have to get out of your sleeping bag relatively early on the Sunday morning, get your tent packed away and rush off to the pub, quite often skipping breakfast into the bargain! Far better for people to actually come onto the campsite on the Saturday evening and join in with the bbq, or as is fast becoming the trend, the bulk order from the local Chinese/Indian. I personally do not feel that a hike up Snowdon, Ben Nevis, Scafell or any other big hill needs to have an element where it is open to all. It's already open to all!!! To say it needs to have a pub event is just like saying that a cache box at the top of a mountain should have a logbook at the bottom for people to sign too! How ridiculous would that be?! Camping events also are open to all. Camp ... or don't camp! If you want to turn up on site, share a meal with us, have some beers, and post an Attended log, that's fine. You will receive a very warm welcome. Its pretty obvious that people who live closeby will not want to camp over, although some do! For me personally, to log Simply Paul's Ben Nevis event or Scott's Snowdonia event, I think I would have to do the climb. Sitting in a pub and having a beer with them when they came back down just wouldn't cut the mustard for me. [] Guidelines ... rules ... sheesh! Getting a bit excessive! Where will it all end? It's a game!!!! It doesn't need to be taken quite so seriously!
  6. Well done Art and Megs!!! Great going. Congrats also to the Wheelybarrows
  7. Well good for you. That told us, didn't it!!!!!!!! Not sure whether it did or didn't, but I have to say I am in total agreement with DrDick&Vick. The newcomers actually far outnumber the oldtimers (and I consider myself to be an oldtimer after nearly four years in the game). Everything evolves - it's the way of the world. I have yet to come across a cacher who has found a Motorway Mayhem or Sidetracked cache and then gone and set gazillions - hasn't happened in this area that I've noticed anyway. There's going to be more and more quantity as people join in the game, but that does not necessarily mean a lack of quality. However, we will eventually run out of beauty spots, footpaths with less than 0.1 miles space in between caches, canals, towpaths, etc etc,but it will be a long time coming. What do we say to the newcomers when that happens? Sorry you can't place any caches because there are no quality spots left! With tools such as GSAK the old timers can easily filter out the micros, the puzzles, the multis, the drivebys, the lack-lustre caches, if they really do not want to go and find them. Newcomers are allowed to place caches too! Without them, us oldltimers will run out of caches to go and find! I will be the first to put my hand up and say "Yes I am now a numbers cacher" but I do still appreciate a canny hide, a pretty countryside stroll, a good viewpoint, a larger cache. I don't particularly like drivebys, but I won't ignore one if it pops up on my TomTom as I pass by. How many caches are there in the UK now? Over 35,000? You don't have to find them all!!! You have a huge choice now so pick the ones you really want to do and go and find them!
  8. Is it mainly men who are having this little button problem?
  9. Nice one! Hope you're going to pop over this way sometime soon
  10. Congratulations!!! And thanks for The Chiltern Hundred - we have made a start, and look forward to completing them sometime soon.
  11. Cumbria: Motorway Mayhem M6 J35/36 Motorway Mayhem M6 J36 - Coffee & cache! Ian, your hair needs combing .... you are looking very windswept there
  12. Well I is happy wiv ya - hang on .. does that contravene Forum Guidelines?
  13. This could be the basis of an interesting philosophical discussion ... You is living in cloud cuckoo land Girlfriend!
  14. Nice thought, but many already don't use the suggested text we give on the website (and that was used in the very first listing) The trouble is once one person fails to copy the text, if the next person copies their text, with minor changes, you soon end up with Chinese whispers! I'll be updating the 'suggested' text as well as noting in our 'Get Involved' section that if you choose to hide WITHIN the station you will need to provide proof of permission! + LMAO @ dibbler Interesting perspective from a rail employee/SideTracked hider also here (sorry FantasticCat, looks like there will still be more, already 338 hides disagree with you ) bikermel76 - series creator, yep, now you all know who to hate Good to see you back on the forums bikermel76 - and well done on being proactive in sorting the suggested text. Sort the wheat from the chaff, i.e., ignore the cynics and go with the flow Edited for cr*ppy spelling
  15. How about camping? Nearest site I could find is Highclere Farm at Beaconsfield. If the link gets removed for being considered commercial, have a look at www.ukcampsite.co.uk and use the map search facility.
  16. From 4.30-5.00pm today on Radio 4 was a programme called Click On and they were discussing Geocaching - had a couple of people going on a geocaching hunt in London somewhere but they didn't find it. There was someone who had been caching since 2002 being interviewed - anyone know who it was? We had it on in the car - I was concentrating on my driving so didn't catch the drift too much. Did anyone else hear it? I might listen again - find the link on here
  17. Yup, that link works - I logged one there this evening.
  18. One week left to sign up!!! Can anyone who hasn't yet paid their deposit please get in touch with the campsite - see event page for details. Thanks. Still room for a few more if you are quick! (Hazel - don't worry ... keeping a place for you ) (I will be offline from this evening until Monday evening so won't be able to respond to any queries/emails/posts but will deal with them on my return, cheers, Liane)
  19. Our team is slowly dwindling in numbers ... Roxy Rabbit being the eldest offspring who officially becomes an adult in a couple of weeks. No 2 offspring is too cool to cache now at the age of 16, although he can be persuaded now and then. I think I have a few years before the youngest two want their own accounts, phew!
  20. SE Caching - essentially a forum for geocachers residing in the South East, but anyone is welcome to sign up, browse, post - it doesn't matter where you are based. There's a regular monthly meet for Berkshire cachers on the second Thursday of each month - check events for details. Bucks/Beds/Herts also have regular meets as do the Oxon cachers. []
