  1. These are Town survey marks for the City of Cape Town. The one photo has the number panted on the outside 3L18 and its coordinates are 50083.760Y 3763880.320 X and 71.394Z. They are used for mapping purposes. The main ones that we use for our Aerial photography have white crosses painted arounf them with the survey mark in the middle. Allan
  2. Google Earth is a high-resolution three-dimensional map of the earth The website gives the precise latitude and longitude of any place and has a built-in facility to measure the exact distance between two places. Not only that but you can turn the image on its side. Google Earth is 10.07MB in size and can be downloaded free from http://earth.google.com
  3. Hi I have done all the caches in the silvermine / southern peninsula alone and have never been concerned about my safty from attacks. It is a good idea to be at least 2 or 3 in agroup on the mountains in case of an accident though. Allan
  4. Constantia Forest S 34° 00.461 E 018° 25.164 (WGS84) This is a very easy cache and only a very short walk. You do not need much time at all to find it.. Regards Allan
  5. Hi Raymond, its good to see you back again. I thought this cache would be ok as its on a well walked path. I did not expect so many people to following the gps and walk in a straight line across the veld. This shows me that these areas are not a good idea at all, even a virtual cache, unless we educate geocahers into not bundu bashing and staying on the footpaths. This also reminds me I still have to retrieve the cache.
  6. Sorry All, but I feel I had to remove the Arboreal Rock cache. The cache is located on a wonderful hiking trail in a sensitive nature reserve. The problem it seems, is that cachers like to take the direct route as given by the GPS. I dont want to help create a new path in the reserve, so I have removed it from the website. I will go and recover the cache soon and will place all the contents into another cache. Peter you placed a camera in the cache, can I put it into another cache or would you like it back? Allan
  7. Does anyone know where I can get some software to download the tracks from my Garmin 12 to a PC. And where can I get the data cable at a decent price. Allan
  8. Is anyone else find a delay on getting new caches to display on the geocaching or is it just my pc. I created a new cache 2 weeks ago and it still does not show on my pc at home even if I refresh the page, yet I can see it at work. The only way I can see it at home is on my own cache page where I can edit it. the cache is Historical Series – Luyolo (Happy) Village Allan
  9. Check out our new website with orthophoto images covering some of Gauteng and Johannesburg. http://66.8.87.85/be_catalog.htm
  10. This sounds like a good Idea, we are game. And I maybe we could place some more in Silvermine just for peter :-) Allan
  11. We walked up to our Rooikrans cache on the weekend to place some clues in it for a new multi stage cache that we are making at the moment. The sad news is that the cache has been stolen. The rocks have been carefully removed, and there are orange peels lying on the ground. According to the logs a travel bug was in the cache Bubo- Party Animal friend, and his pals, now including the furry mouse. So sadly we have a travel bug missing in action Allan
  12. Is this a joke. An American who judges the world from what is on wildlife documentries. Please get out and see the world before you judge. If we had to judge america by what we see on TV then I would never even consider going there. South Africa is a built up country and the wild animals can only be found in game reserves. The crime is high in Jhb but there are still many open areas that are safe to explore. Geocaching has only caught on here in the last year, so its still a very young and growing sport.
  13. Found this site for geocaching with kayaks in Cape Town. http://kayak.co.za/geo.shtml * Register with Coastal Kayak as a Cache Hunter * Pay R20 entry fee You just have to pay in order to take part. Allan

Raymond I must agree with you, nothing beats a good paper printed map.
