  1. Geocaching Block Party Event Cache info: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=89622811-330d-4fa0-b2c7-e6628c0adbcf
  2. Save the GPX file somewhere (Where you can find it!) In Google Earth. File > Open >>Find the GPX file, there you go! Thank you very much for the help! I love this: "I have a Geocaching problem... Work gets in the way!" LOL!
  3. Save the GPX file somewhere (Where you can find it!) In Google Earth. File > Open >>Find the GPX file, there you go! ....or just drag and drop the GPX file onto the Google Earth icon. Wow! I just dragged and dropped my GPX file onto the Google Earth icon (which I pinned to the taskbar) and I'm amazed. I love getting answers like this! Thank you, Starbrand, and Bear and Ragged! I did these experiments on my desktop. Now I have to see what happens when I try things like this with my iPhone 3GS.
  4. Save the GPX file somewhere (Where you can find it!) In Google Earth. File > Open >>Find the GPX file, there you go! Google Earth is astonishing! I should have tried it eons ago. I imported my .gpx file into it and saw way more info than I could have imagined would be available. Right now, I'm in The Vatican City.
  5. How do I put the GPX file into Google Earth? I just downloaded Google Earth to my iPhone 3GS. Or, how do I use it with my desktop? Before I get flustered and frustrated (!) I want to see what this looks like before I try GSAK. I was able to see the same sample you showed, via the EasyGPS s/w. It worked great for the sample file and did not say you have to upgrade. That's what threw me off.
  6. I looked at the EasyGPS sample file - Stow.gpx - and it shows a map on the right half of the screen. I opened my gpx files (tried several times) and all I get are the cache names and cache symbols. I selected each option (waypoints, routes, tracks and geocaches) under the "list" field and all have the same result. No map. Just cache names. How do I see the maps, please? If you need a screenshot of Stow.gpx, I'll upload it. Thanks! I'm using the Garmin eTrex Venture HC.
  7. After importing a pocket query into base camp, go to VIEW - DATA LIST FILTER - SELECT "GEOCACHES". Go to the bottom left of base camp and you'll see "My Collection". If you still only see the GC#, another way to see the geocache name is to click on the properties tab to the right of the "My Collection" tab. In the comments, it has the name of the cache. I'm brand new so if any of this is not helpful, please excuse me.
  8. Every time I write something in a forum, I unwittingly start a big hulabaloo - lol - so I'm just going to say what I do. Whether it's right for everybody else or not, it's right for me. I use the iPhone 3GS and keep the notepad and the camera apps open as well as the gecoaching app. I put a short note in notepad with the cache name and take pictures and fill everything out online from my PC. Much easier than writing at length from the phone. When I found my first FIRST TO FIND (FTF), (last week), I logged it and came home and edited it, to make sure I got FTF credit. Somewhere in these forums it says that the FTF is who signed the log first, but I don't want to depend on that, so I logged it from my iPhone. I was too excited finding it that I didn't pay much attention to how I posted it. I had beginners luck with posting my find from the iPhone. It also contained a geocoin! Welcome to the world's greatest adventure!
  9. What about the one I originally referenced? USB 2in1 POWER DATA Cable for Garmin Etrex GPS NEW on ebay
  10. I've been looking at USB power and data transfer cables to connect a Garmin Geko 201 to a PC or netbook, but the cables all look like they have male to female "pins". The port on the Geko has four flat round gold circles. Is that the way it should be? Is this the correct cable or am I supposed to hardwire something first? If the above cable is not right, what cable can I use to connect the geko to the PC? Thanks, huntfor
  11. Great idea! I forgot about that. Just started using PQ's last week.
  12. On the geocaching website, can we please have a feature that allows us to sort the caches by clicking the columns? (Like on spreadsheets, etc). Mainly, I'm interested in getting the difficulty and terrains sorted top to bottom, with easiest (1/1) first. It's much easier to read all the data on a PC. Not so easy on a phone even though the app lets you sort.
  13. Thank you for the Welcome! That was very nice! Now that I see how its done - thank you for that, I see it was what Markwell was trying to tell me, also. I appreciate the step-by-step instructions! Happy caching! Looks like you'll be busy forever! "Frankenstein's neck" - wow! The names people come up with. Steph / huntfor
  14. I finally set up the PQ to do what I want! I selected the event caches, active, past seven days and found three upcoming events. Thanks very much!
  15. I'm going to try that right now! This is a partial description of what I was looking for, except that now I know they are called "event caches" rather than a group meeting or some other title. I think I previously did not select "event caches" in my PQ's. http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#event "Event caches should be submitted no less than two weeks prior to the date of the event, so that potential attendees will have sufficient notice to make their plans."
  16. That showed me events that passed as well as a few new ones. I want to know about them before they're over so I can plan to get there. Maybe I'm not asking the right thing anyway. I want to go to meetings to find nearby geocachers and learn more about all this.
  17. Is there a way to see upcoming events AND sort them by distance besides being notified of them in the weekly Groundspeak newsletter? I'm referring to Events, not event caches. Unless all events are event caches.
  18. That's the fun of the game. It CAN be just about anything. By the Key-Tag, do you mean a tag or a magnetic key holder? (slide-drawer you hide a spare key in, stick it to something metal.) If so, it could well have been.. If it's out in the open, and plenty of other people around (read: Muggles), yeah, Stealth is needed ion snagging it.. The game controller, Hmm.. Still possible.. People have gutted out old Nintendo controllers, old radios, ATM machines (yes, I am serious). and placed them in odd places.. Micro, stands for the size, and content. usually only a log book (sometimes, just a piece of paper), possibly a pencil (If space permits) but not likely for tradable items (swag) check the Guidelines for Size (<---<< Click this link) for the size requirements. but, they can be just about anything (within reason.) The cache I was looking for said to bring a pen because the only thing in it is the log page. This thing I found was a plastic tag, not a magnetic key holder and it was attached to part of what looks like they meant for it to be locked! I mean, I don't know JUST HOW FAR geocachers will go to find something! The game controller was empty and the perfume atomizer was empty also. I thought it might be the perfume atomizer because someone logged that the log sheet was almost as hard to get back in as to find and get out. That's why I really want to open that blue tag! If I get arrested, who will bail me out?
  19. If I open something on a commercial property where the hider got permission to leave the cache, I just don't want to create trouble. It seems like there should be a marking of some sort on these caches that are not obvious caches. I'll follow what someone told me a long time ago! "When in doubt, stay out!".
  20. Is there supposed to be an obvious container for a micro cache or can it be any old piece of junk? If it is a micro cache container, is it labeled as a geocache? Twice I have been very near a cache and saw things like key tags ATTACHED to equipment, a perfume atomizer and other tiny "receptacles". I was afraid to open the key tag. The perfume atomizer and a tiny game controller were both empty. PUZZLED!
  21. Thanks for posting this because I was searching on eBay and they are all up near $300.00. The rebate, if anyone else wants it is here: http://garmin.blogs.com/files/dakota_oregon_rebate.pdf Just found it for $209.00 & free shipping, after rebate here: http://www.megagps.com/garmindakota10.aspx...CFQqwsgodAWE_sA I think I'd rather buy it used and at half the price of the new ones, in case my family can't continue geocaching. I do have the iPhone 3GS!
  22. Which model please? I hunted for them <ahem> and they are pricey! Being a beginner, I want to see if this is REALLY FOR ME, although I already invested in all kinds of supplies, etc.
  23. Never mind. I'm going to return it. My husband, also not so nimble-fingered - lol - could not use it one handed, either. My iPHONE IS much easier to use.
  24. I just bought the Magellan Triton 400 - adventure pack yesterday and while I CAN STILL RETURN IT, does anyone know of one in the same price range or so - up to $200.00, I guess, that needs only a light touch to press the buttons? I have to press the buttons hard (for me) to get them to react. The power on button, especially, but even the menu buttons. It took about 15 minutes to add my email address in the settings. I have orthopedic problems in my fingers and hands, so, for my specific operation, this is not a one hand device. It's also heavier than I expected. Otherwise, it's pretty nice for the first one I've ever seen in person.
