  1. I Export a .gpx file from GSAK. From my Found database, first I filter for all the caches that are now Archived, then I Export those. Those have the name FoundArchived.gpx and have an associated bitmap file called FoundArchived.bmp which looks like a tombstone. Then, I filter for the still Active Found caches and Export the Found.gpx file. Those get an associated icon that is a box with a check mark. It is named Found.bmp The "smart name" code I use for the waypoint is: %smart=9 %con1%typ1%dif1%ter1 %By For the description, I use this code: %Hint %Code That way I have most of the Name, the Size of the container, the Type of cache (Traditional, Multi, Virtual, Puzzle, etc), the Difficulty and Terrain (based on a 10-point scale), and the cache owner. The Description gives me the Hint and the GC code, something I don't generally need, but some of the people I cache with use it.
  2. The way I saved gas before placing a cache almost 40 miles away was by inspecting the area carefully in Google Earth. Then, I emailed my local Reviewer and asked if the areas that looked good for placing a cache were open. They were. When I made the drive, and the hike, I had all the Traditional caches in my GPSr so I wouldn't encroach on the 528' distance from them.
  3. All of those options would be great additions. I especially like the idea of being able to filter out specific Cache Owners and filtering by the number of Bookmark Lists.
  4. Welcome to the Forums! What program are you using to send the caches to your GPSr? If it is set up for Geocaching, and if the program, like EasyGPS or GSAK, is sending the cache with the correct icon, the caches will show up as Geocaches, and as Waypoints.
  5. It depends on which "Mapsource" maps you have. If you have Topo, you can load those with no problem. If you have MetroGuide, you can load those as well. If you have City Select and never used the second Unlock Code, you should be able to get a code for the new GPSr. If you have City Navigator and Unlocked it to another GPSr, you cannot put those maps on this new GPSr. Getting new maps on the DVD instead of the data card is the better option.
  6. I have the Vista HCx and use the compass. I shopped around a lot and when I purchased it, the difference in price wasn't so much to make me get the Legend HCx.
  7. I think that would be awesome. I went with an old Palm IIIxe that I got on eBay for $15 and that works great! The z22 can only be better. Thanks! I might check out the Palm IIIxe too. The used or refurbished z22's are around $70 for "Buy it now" at ebay, don't know what winning bids wind up being yet. I've never bought used or refurbished electronics, though. It's around $94 new. Any thoughts on that or any problems buying such from ebay? Hubby would say "Get a new one," but I am adding TOO much stuff to my new addiction as it is!!! All suggestions or comments are appreciated! Unless you already have a Z22, I don't recommend one of those. They are hard to read in bright sunlight compared to the less-expensive Palm m500 or m515. I wouldn't get an old Palm because those connect with the Serial Port. I have bought many things on eBay since 1999 and have very rarely been disappointed. Just check the Feedback of the seller and make sure they have 100% Positive Feedback (or close to it.) Also, make sure the shipping isn't outrageous. Some sellers charge way more than necessary.
  8. But, but, but . . . how could you have forgetten to list the person who wanted to be FTF because they provided the pen to the person who was the actual FTF?
  9. Welcome to the Forums! If I have run into a Traditional cache that should be listed as a Multi, or a Traditional that is really a Puzzle or ALR (Additional Logging Requirements), I just email my local Reviewer. He can make the change if he deems it necessary.
  10. I Delete by Symbol using the Menu button when I am on the Find Waypoints or Find Geocaches screen. If I ever create a waypoint in the field that I want to keep, I give it a different icon from the Treasure Chest or Open Treasure Chest, and the other icons GSAK uses for "Child Waypoints," since those are the ones I delete before loading the GPSr with a fresh set.
  11. Welcome to the Forums! I've had a Palm m500 for several years and it works great for caching. It is easy-to-see in bright sunlight, something that is not true of the much-more-expensive Palm TX or some of the Zire models. The Palm m515 also works great and if you want to spend a bit more money, the Zire 72 Silver Edition has more features. Both of those are easy to see outside, but the batteries don't last quite as long as that of the m500. You shouldn't need to spend more than $30.00 on a Palm that connects to your computer with USB. Then you'll probably want to spend a little more for a hard case. I got a nice PalmOne case for the price of shipping. Cachemate is a very reasonable $8.00.
  12. When I took a trip north to Death Valley a few years ago, I ran into this on several older caches along the way. They were listed as Traditional caches, but were, in fact, Offsets. I DNF'd one because I looked for it at the coordinates instead of reading the long, detailed description in my Palm. When I am traveling, I usually don't put Multis or ALRs into my GPSr because I frequently just stop, look for the cache at the coordinates, and continue down the road. If I ever got in the habit of reading the entire cache description before looking for a cache, this wouldn't be a problem . . . but after all this time I haven't been able to cultivate that habit . . . If I lived in an area where this was commonplace, I would probably contact the local Reviewer to have those caches reclassified as or .
  13. Yes . . . But seriously, haven't you ever spotted a cache at exactly the same time as another person you are caching with? I have, many times. I think it is great that people agree to claim Co-FTF instead of disagreeing on who was actually FTF. No need to cause more potential angst in what is supposed to be a fun game.
  14. You have the option of Deleting the log of anyone you think didn't actually get to the cache. Or you could list it on that other site. Many of those caches employ "Confirmation Codes." I'm not interested in having "Found it Passwords" on GC.com.
  15. I found a coin in a cache one time and emailed the person who supposedly still had it. Somehow, he had forgotten to log that cache on a recent trip. With my reminder they logged the cache and the coin got the correct mileage.
  16. Just thought I would give just one example of why including the coords is not a good idea. This cache was just published and I got the Instant Notification. If the coords were included, people would be rushing off to look for a cache that hasn't been placed yet . . . Whooops!
  17. The first log on a brand new cache in your area will be a "Published" log. That is your local Reviewer. You can contact them through their Profile. Welcome to the addiction!
  18. If you don't need a compass or altimeter, I recommend getting the Legend HCx. It supports auto-routing, POIs, and can hold lots of maps, depending on the size of the card you get. I have the Vista HCx and like its small, convenient size.
  19. Check eBay for the older "Roads and Recreation" CD. You should be able to pick those maps up pretty cheap and they will be better than no maps. The Topo maps are also better than nothing. I got my Topo maps on eBay for less than the newest version.
  20. Do you still have the coin number? If so, you could "grab" it from the location it is in now and drop it in the cache with a "Coin Drop" Note you can then Delete. That will put the coin into that cache. Then you can Retrieve it and drop it in its present location. That will sort of correct the mileage it traveled.
  21. Have you found this one? I loved it. How about this one? This was another creative hide that brought a smile to our faces.
  22. It works for me using the Opera browser, another excellent alternative browser. I never use IE.
  23. I'll echo what the others have said. Thank you for placing caches that involve a hike and a challenge. Those are my favorite kind of caches. Most of the caches I have placed involve a hike and many of those have not been found for many months. It seems there is a core group of "Hiking Cachers" around here, and once they have found the caches, the containers sit idle for a long, long time . . .
  24. Welcome to the Forums! When I first started caching I got a GPSr that connected with the Serial Port, then I got a laptop that didn't have a Serial Connection. When I first started caching, the GPSr I bought couldn't do auto-routing, and then I found out how useful that was, for me. So I upgraded to a GPSr that connected with USB and could auto-route with the optional City Navigator maps installed. I got the Vista HCx. I recommend either the Legend HCx or Vista HCx if your budget for the GPSr and maps is less than $300.00.
