  1. Ive played 3 carts now, and I cant unlock any of them. Does anyone else have this issue? I play the carts with the whereyougo app for Android. I take a screen cap of the unlock code (I know I cant read my own writing...) and when I enter the code I get an incorrect code error. The andriod player is compatible with the Pocket PC version of the cart, and completing the cart does not give me a .GWS file to upload, I have the following files: .GWC, .GWL, and .OWS files. If I open the .GWC files, I can confirm the unlock code, but even copying and pasting the code gives me an incorrect code error. Anyone have any ideas?
  2. Can I ask whats wrong with this app? How does it violate the terms of use? I am very new to this and just surprised and interested. We're not supposed to talk about it on the forums anymore. But there's a thread you can read. Biggest problem with it now is that the developer abandoned it, and it's up to others to continue development. The next time Groundspeak makes a significant change to their website layout, the app will cease to function so it's a good idea to setup your geocaching workflow around another app. The app was taken over by a new group of developers shortly after carnero announced he would no longer support the app. As far as violating the TOU is concerned, GS, in the past, has accused the app of "scraping" the site, but they also accused the greasemonkey script of crashing the servers. The "forum gods" like throwing the "identify as browser" option in the settings as "proof" it is "scraping", but all that option allows you to do is open links on your phone in c:geo, it identifies the app to the phone as browser, not to the servers as a browser. According to Carnero (the original app developer), the ONLY complaint he received from GS was using their icons, which he changed at their request. Find a phone you like, then find an app you like.
  3. I hear you can buy TVs out of the back of a truck for a lot less than you would at the store, too. Again, folks: this app violated the TOU you agreed to when you obtained an account on the site. It doesn't matter how slick the interface was; it was not a legitimate geoaching app. The fact that the official app sucks (and I am not a big fan of it) does not change that fact. And if the even numbered channels on the high price TV from the store didnt work, you would be ok with it because the manufacturer said that's the best they could do? The point is 1 developer managed to make an app consistently superior to GS app, from the outside looking in, for free. Why cant Groundspeak make one that is comparable? It is their system and database, isnt it? At $10 per download, it is well above the average paid app price of $3.27. As of right now, the app is in the 50,000-250,000 download range, so at a minimum, GS has grossed $349,650 from the sale of their app. [(50K downloads *$9.99)*.7] Now, do you expect anyone to believe the overhead on the development of that app is anywhere near $350K?
  4. SQ, The only thing that "1-off" developer did was consistently push out a product that performed better, had more features than, and worked better than Grounsdpeaks app, and he did it for $10 less. I guess that's the American way anymore, if you get beat bad enough at your own game, just take your ball and go home.
  5. I carry a spare battery for my Droid with me at all times. 172 finds and counting, all on my smart phone.
  6. With the title of the thread, I thought the OP wanted to hunt and geocache at the same time. I tried this year, but it didnt wor. (No chaches close to where i was hunting.) Leave the geo-dog at home. In many states it is legal for a hunter to shoot a dog that is chasing a deer.
  7. 1- Sure, why not? $10 is $10. That would put enough gas in my motorcycle to go back and forth to work for a week. 2-No, but he can access his iTunes on his Android device, for free. 3-The OP has proven there are developers willing to allow you to switch between OS's, all they had to do was ask. 4- Ummmmm, last I checked, that IS the app that must not be named. OP, I can understand your want to support GS in using their app, but until GS is willing to put out an app worth the price, why bother?
  8. 168 finds (just to be different), before I hid my first, and only (so far). Got a feel, learned a lot from finding caches, and even though my first hide is a 1.5/1, Ive received a couple compliments on being a good hide.
  9. I just had a friend of mine set up his account, and start caching. When he filled out his registration, he was asked if he was referred by a cacher, and to give that cachers user name. Is that used for anything other than internal use? Do you get something for X number of new cachers you get involved? I thought maybe it would link you up as friends, but he isnt showing in my friends list either. I also searches the FAQ and didnt see anything either.
  10. My 7 year old created his own account. Other than the one bad post he made in the forum, he has been fine with his account. He doesnt always log his finds, but I try to keep him updated when he falls behind. It is a little more effort on my part, but he usually enjoys caching, and that makes it worth it in the long run.
  11. I had a TB on my last family vehicle, but I found out the window cling, tinted windows, and sunshine don't play well together when I got rid of the car. Most of the ink remained on the window, and made the tag unusable. I have a guy near me that works in vinyl, so I am looking for the "bug" (I already have the tracking number off the dog tag) but the image on the dog tag is too small. I checked on GCU where Ive found EVERYTHING you could need, but still cant get the template to replace my bug. TIA!
  12. Thanks B&R. I was hoping for an easier way. This is the trail Im doing. It stretches from the OH-PA state line to Ogdensburg NY, at the east end of lake Ontario. Its too hard to do the cache along a route way, but I will figure out a way to get it done.
  13. I know Im missing something here. How do I view a bookmark list on google maps from my computer? I know I can generate a PQ fro the bookmark list and view it on google maps from my android phone, but The geotrail I am doing is over 500 miles long. I would like to view the trail to "break it up" into manageable chunks. I could have sworn I stumbled on how to do this once before, but Im stumped.
  14. 23 miles from home! Im in. Yes you can make it to the Peace bridge in 2 hours, I regularly made it from the refinery to the border in 1 hour 50 minutes. The trick is keeping that left door closed. But as pointed out by TheWhiteUrkel, you can easily spend 2-3 hours at the border. I would shoot for crossing between 12am-3am, bars close in Buffalo at 4am, and you DONT want to get stuck in that mess. FYI, Dont forget your passport, or you will not cross the US border.
  15. No answers? Or will GS release a general beta for evaluation before the full version comes out? I have to ask because I use an HTC Tattoo, and a lot of apps aren't officially available because of the smaller screen size. So, if my phone's not going to be supported I'd like to know soonish so I can stop holding my breath According to the powers that be (in a post linked somewhere no one can ever find), They have a closed beta of 100 testers. No mention of hardware configurations, OS versions, screen resolutions, etc. I never started holding my breath.
  16. No, there is no list. There is no reference to that app being banned either, unless you say you are using it. Type "geocaching" into the market, and get the results. All of the free ones are good, some have features others dont, and you will need to try them all out to decide what you like and dont like. If I HAD to choose, I prefer GeoHunter over GeoBeagle, but most of us use what we use, and keep to ourselves about it.
  17. Using a FroYo (2.2) ROM, I am able to upload a picture with the stock browser. Using Dolphin will not allow me to upload a picture though. You can either root and run FroYo, or it is rumored to start being pushed OTA on 7/13/10.
  18. Youre wasting your time, they already have your money from the premium membership. They have no hope of making money on the app, as the free apps (take your pick, they are all good) are way too popular. I was hoping for it, but Ill continue to use what I have because it works, and its FREE!
  19. We know a lot, but none of it is going to help if we don't know what app you are using.
  20. You will find fairly frequent updates if you look in the right places, like here. You won't find official status reports in this thread because the topic here is "Best Android geocaching app." There have also been past postings where Groundspeak Lackeys have laughed at and denied the Apple conspiracy theory, explaining that they are developers trying to post stuff in the iTunes store just like everyone else. I would invite those who are disappointed in this latest beta testing delay to post (politely) in the thread I linked, so that it will be read by the appropriate Lackeys. Now, back to our regularly scheduled topic. The problem is, even though they can prohibit discussion of the "app that will not be named", they need to make the "official" app worth the asking price. Rather than the head in the sand mentality, someone should have worked with a certain developer and his free app. Just ignore it, and it will go away? PS: The Android app discussion never should have been started in the iPhone sub forum, thats why noone can find it.
  21. Is anyone able to download the cart from the Wherigo site directly to the phone? I upgraded to FroYo, and I can download the file in .gwc format not, but the cart still isnt recognized by WhereYouGo unless I download it to the computer and transfer it to the phone.
  22. There shouldnt be an issue as long as this cacher doesnt pay you a visit: But then again, if you are going to go to a cache AT a church, you should expect what you will find. I never understood why the Anti-religion isnt an agenda, but thats a discussion for another day.
  23. For some strange reason, when you download a cart from the site on your phone, it downloads as an.aspx file, not a .gwc file. Downloading it from the PC and transfering it to the phone works fine, and it in the correct format. Droid, dolphin browser, untested on the stock browser.
