  1. I have a few caches out there, some of which haven't been found for several months. Should I recover them and place them in more popular areas, or leave them and be elated when they are found? I was just on vacation and I found a cache in which the last log entry was 11 months ago! I thought that was pretty cool. Perhaps I just talked myself out of it, but I am curious to others' thoughts. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  2. Personally, I think that this is a perfect example of what a Virtual cache SHOULD be. Have you tried to write Jeremy or TPTB a note with an explanation as to why it should be approved? Honestly, a detailed, well written appeal does go a long way. Personally, I would prefer a challenging, informative, interesting virtual to a grouping of three wet tupperware traditionals less than 100 yards apart. After all is said and done, though, it's Jeremy's site and he has to consider all participants. VF --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  3. I agree that it is a bit frustrating to go through all the extra work to get what we used to get without any hassle - just a simple map showing caches found and caches not found. I was very encouraged a couple months ago by the proposed new mapping solution. I hope it comes online soon. I guess the bigger frustration is to see all the other changes that have come online that, to me, are less important (like the travel bugs, event caches, etc on the individual state pages and the total forum overhaul). I'm still thankful and grateful for this site and hope to continue being an enthusiastic supporter financially. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  4. I recently launched a Virtual cache and made it Members Only for the first two weeks to give members some bang for their buck. Then I made it public. I don't have any problem giving some people preferential treatment - especially when I fully intend to make it public eventually. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  5. You only want pictures of the geo-babes to gawk at. Seriously, though, profiles are doing exactly what they are meant to do - allow users to share as much about themselves as they feel comfortable. I do agree with Leatherman, though. Just simply with regards to posting in the forums, it would be nice for folks to put their geographic region in their profile. It doesn't even have to be city/state or city/country. It can be region as far as I'm concerned. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!

  8. The best thing to do, really, is fire up your moving map GPS on your way caching and see if the GPS is putting you on the road you're on. If you pull up to an intersection, and it's the same intersection that is shown on your GPS map, you're probably safe to continue caching. On the otherhand, if it shows you in the parking lot of Sears - and the nearest Sears is a mile away - better make a U-Turn and head home. As far as GPS affecting commercial and recreational flying, pilots have been navigating without GPS for decades. A prerequisite check of NOTAMS (NOtices To AirMen) would say whether or not GPS was functional. If not, LORAN, VORs, ADFs, etc are still quite functional. --------------- Go! 9. quote:Originally posted by Brian - Team A.I.:A co-worker of mine is good friends with a guy that owns a gas station here in town. He was told while getting gas on his way in, that corporate sent out a fax to all owners advising them that as soon as the first bomb(s) fall, gas will go up $.50 immediately. He's not one to BS things, so I'd be inclined to believe him. Just thought I'd pass the info along. Brian Team A.I. I think everyone who raised their prices after 9/11 learned their lesson against price gouging. Since oil is DOWN $8 a barrel, I'm sure district attorneys are on the watch. quote:Jeremy Irish:I'm not surprised. It's about time the pendulum started swinging back though (see: 1973 oil crisis and the rise of fuel efficient vehicles). Soon we'll all be driving one of these. Bummer. I was considering trading up my '96 Saturn SL2 for something bigger. 35 MPG and $23,900? Keep your Saturn! My 2002 Satty gets 40 MPG and only cost $9,995. It has A/C and seats 4 people, looks kinda cool and has dent resistant polymer side panels! Of course our other car is a Suburban with a 42 gallon tank that costs nearly $70 to fill up every two weeks. Between both cars, we average about the same as two full size sedans. --------------- Go! 10. quote:Originally posted by Pulaski:* SEARCHLITE CACHE - find a searchlight that is shining into the night sky and photo. Many of these are WWII surplus and my cache included research on them that took several hours to complete. * GEO WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE - Virtual c. taking you to a plaque commemorating a location where General W slept. Includes nearby Civil War cannons and a statue of a CW General and his dog *READING PA WEBCAM- admittedly fairly far away but no farther than many other cams and it included a second photo for verification Let me tackle each of these individually for their merit: SEARCHLITE CACHE: As Jeremy stated, locationless caches are in moratorium right now. Personally, I like them as much as virtuals, and believe they have the same geocaching merit as finding a box in the woods. They should, however, be interesting. I don't know if a searchlight qualifies...GEO WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE: I kinda like this one. READING PA WEBCAM: I've been wondering why webcam caches were ever invented. Half the time they don't work, and for all the whining about locationless this and virtual that, I'd rather see the storage space used for them than on webcam caches. --------------- Go! 11. I can't find a GREAT list of stats on the AudioVox. I'm guessing it isn't compatible with MapSource or anything else that the Garmin has built a standard for. I'm sure the Rino is worth it's weight in gold compared to the Audiovox. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  12. Anyone have the Audiovox GMRGPS? It seems to be priced between the Rino 110 and 120. Anyone know if the Audiovox peer-to-peer is compatible with the Rino? Does the Audiovox use the same protocols and waypoint standards? There's not a lot of info on the Audiovox website... --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet! 13. I actually complained when they first came out that I couldn't DELETE a pocket querie, just disable it by unclicking the report dates. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  14. Get their camera crews to follow you and make another hit reality TV Show, "Married by GPS". --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!

My wife quit smoking before we got married. She just had the amazing will power to ween herself off. 5 a day for a month, 4 a day for a month etc until she just hated being around it. 16. I just wanted to take a moment to say THANKS to Elias and the rest of the crew as they are often hidden in Jeremy's shadow. Jeremy, you da man too, but this is Elias' moment. Elias has truly been the Groundspeak man - the technical genius behind the website that feeds the madness of we the geocachers. So keep up the good work! And pass on the praise down the ladder all the way to the custodian who empties your trashcan and tell them 'Thanks' for being a part of a great crew. VF --------------- Go! 17. AFTER 9Key approved my latest virtual, he sent a note asking if it was necessary to have yet another virtual cache in Downtown Dallas. I sent him a note in reply kinda saying something along the lines about how my virtual was worth more historically and had an enthusiast attraction that a lot of the crap virtuals in the city didn't. (I was just perterbed by the number of virtuals that took you to a winged horse which may or may not have been there because someone moved it to another part of the city. First horsey, fine. Numbers 16 and up gotta go. I'm exaggerating now, but that's how I felt.) I also was admittedly a little jealous 'cause I asked Jeremy long ago about being a regional approver and he said he'd contact me. Felt jilted. I also had no idea how bad the virtual cache situation was. I ALSO felt like as a relative 'old timer' I deserved a little more faith by the approvers that I wasn't placing just a dumb virtual. So, 9Key, I'm sorry for firing back a stern, critical reply to your comments. There is no way in the world I would have the time or patience to deal with the crap you gotta put up with. Thanks for taking up the job of approver. Most of all, thanks for approving my virtual!! VF --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  18. This whole numbering scheme is hexed! Why not GCFFFF0 thru GCFFFFF? In the Markwell'd thread mentioned above, Jeremy says he'll just remove the "C" to take it up to GFFFFF. He also stated that by the time it comes to that, most GPSs will be able to handle more than 6 character waypoint ID's. Anyone out there still restricted to 6 characters? An interesting side note: Markwell predicted that we wouldn't hit GCFFFF until 7/10/2005! That was at the rate of expansion in October of 2001. --------------- Go! 20. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:OK, I know I'm gonna get flamed for this suggestion, but staple log sheets to the back of the ranger's note and keep the cache active. It will be a log only cache and because the ranger placed it, obviously it's been approved. Be sure to use a couple strong screws to keep the baggie in place on the tree. --------------- Go! 21. I don't mind it at all. And, I agree - the fact that it's located in a sanctuary means no physical cache possibility. As for its historical and artistic value, I give it a thumbs up for a virtual. Just be sure to make the proof-of-visit something that can't be found on the web. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  22. Answer 1: The only way to open a dialoge and discuss a specific criterion for cache validity is in this forum right here. Perhaps since it is a question of guidelines, the Geocaching.com Discussion room would be the best place to plead your case. Answer 2: I would specifically argue to the approver first. If there is no change, then "Appeal to Jeremy!" I've never had anything that had to go that far. I had to explain a Virtual once, and previously, Jeremy questioned the safety of a cache I participated in placing. After a through explanation, he continued to allow it. For the most part, the Groundspeak Crew is fair. If they say No, explain. If not, then go back to the drawing board. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  23. Absolutely. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  24. There has been a lot of talk about what to do if a travel bug tag is lost, but what about a travel bug that has seen it's goal? Can you reset that tag number, apply it to a new trinket with a new goal and set the trip odometer back to zero? --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
  25. I've seen how CORPORATIONS have used GPS's to track their vehicles, and how employees have been upset because they were caught driving the company van to go out and buy a six pack off the clock. I've seen how GPS braclets have been proposed to help keep track of kids who travel to and from school unsupervised. I've heard of people getting tickets because they were speeding in a car that had the Onstar system. So far, other than convicted felons, I have not heard of anyone being forced into wearing a tracking device. --------------- Go! And don't be afraid to get a little wet!
