  1. If it's the basic eTrex Legend, the old blue one, you can do a lot better than that on price. I wouldn't give more than $50 for it. It's only got 8 megs of ram, so is very limited as to how many maps you can load. I recently bought a Legend C for $75... and Walmart had the eTrex Legend HCx Bike and Hike deal for $150 recently, for comparison. The Walmart deal included pretty decent maps, too. Thanks I'll keep looking around then
  2. I currently use a TomTom 3rd edition for geocaching but it's hard to use around roads. I'd like to buy a more geocaching oriented GPSr and I recently came across a Garmin etrex Legend for $100. Is that a good deal? Is it a good improvement over the TomTom? I also live in Canada so is there any problems is should expect because of that?
  3. Snakes, the 2nd time I found them while geocaching I was stepping over a bunch of wood brush to get to a cache and two of them went almost right by me into the wood. A turkey also. Seriously. I was walking towards a quick find and this thing just ran off at lightning speed into the forest. Also a deer but it was more cool than scary.
  4. My first was in late March. I had stayed up all night (I discovered geocaching at like 2am and was too excited about going out to sleep). I chose three to go after and wrote down the directions (didn't have a GPS). My first look was a bust (I walked around got muddy and scratched with thorns), the 2nd look was also a bust as there were too many muggles around. My third look and First Find was a little micro in a park beside a grocery store. I was elated. 256 caches later...
  5. I ran into a fellow cacher once. I noticed he was wearing a geocaching.com hat. He was nice enough to give me a lift too!
  6. I like using muggles. Mug or Mugging usually means stealing, so that's what I think of when someone says "that cache has been muggled"
  7. So if there's a group under one name, that would be okay for a joint FTF, but if there's two people with different usernames, they have to have a fight to the death for the FTF? Geocaching is for fun, so are FTFs
  8. But it's not just the one is it? How many branches get snapped, how much trampling? Is it going to kill mother nature? no of course not. Is it going to leave mother nature with some nasty pimples and in some cases scars? yes. Do we need to do our utmost to prevent those? yes, for nature and to be able to keep caching in pretty places. How do we cache in pretty places without trails? Where I live, trees get huge limbs snapped off from thunderstorms monthly and live. Pimples and scars are part of nature.
  9. Ugh I grow tired of this. Some people have that "A Sound of Thunder" idea where if you step on a butterfly it'll destroy the Earth. Will breaking a branch kill a tree? Unlikely. Stepping on snails, grass, plants, ants or butterflies isn't going to kill mother nature. Animals (including humans) have been making paths longer than any of us can imagine and nature does alright. Worry about the Oil in the Gulf or burning down rainforests. If a geocacher burns down a forest to get to a cache, then people can complain.
  10. They keep singing Message in a Bottle whenever we go caching! Or am I in the wrong topic?
  11. Combination of going places I've never been before, challenge, history, spending time with family and exercise.
  12. I wonder who keeps the whole "treasure hunt" idea going... Oh.
  13. What you could do is put a cache nearby that has the history and isn't breaking the rules. It doesn't have to be that close either, just say "100 metres up stream is a bridge that...." or "Down the road is where Ben Franklin" etc. Call it Electric Kite Road or something witty like that.
  14. Any room in there for a GPS? Happy Birthday
  15. Good job! Any word on what caused the fire?
  16. Container: Trials of Caledonia - 3 - Secrets in the Attic: Coolest one so far, although the coordinates were a little off. Hide: PHC - Greenwood: Took awhile to find, one of those caches where you have an "omg that's it!" moment Location: Faded Markers Series: Keeper of the Cache: This one really tied together history and geocaches for me. Earthcache: Mermaid's Table: Really great spot and interesting rocks.
  17. She's a huge geocacher so I'll definitely have to do one or two with her.
  18. I use a tomtom and it gets the job done. If you're to close to the road it's a pain. Usually doesn't have trails.
  19. My first snake encounter was a 4 weeks ago or so. I was trying to find the best way to the cache and I noticed something moving on the path, small garter snake I think, but it ran off so I wasn't too freaked out. The second encounter I was caching with my girlfriend, and I found a spot where the cache might be and started towards it around a large pile of branches. Two snakes, right by ME, darted into the branches. GF didn't believe me and I ran as fast as possible to the cache with her. As we got ready to leave the snakes started poking their heads out of the wood, so at least she saw proof that my panic attack was justified . Needless to say we went around the way without snakes.
  20. I enjoy both, rurals because of the nature and privacy of it, and urban because of the interesting hides and I'm a sucker for magnetics Parks are probably my favourites though.
  21. I did a lot of no GPS caching in my early days. Basically it depends on how well written your directions are (a map could be easier). Also if your trying one that's in the middle of a forest, try and look for a good GIS Online Map. Try and look for things like paths, clearings, creeks, etc.
