  1. I have one of these. It was one of the ones that moves. I was just trying to figure out how to get a log book into it. I like this idea.
  2. If you are interested, I can email you the set up.
  3. My Who Dunnit Series is set up like this. You have to go out and find five traditional Who Dunnit Caches. They are all at least small caches if not regulars. When you get to the cache, you open the log book, and there is a Suspect, Weapon, and Room. You record these, because these are now eliminated. Then after you have all 5 traditionals, you have eliminated all but one suspect, weapon and room. Then you go to the puzzle cache page, and look at the options, eliminate the cleared suspects, and it will give you the coordinated for the final, which is an Ammo Can. It has 20 finds, and 8 Favorite points. 44% according to GC.com. I have gotten a lot of positive feed back, and it seems like everyone enjoys the series. I have also seen several of the "Battleship Series" I contacted the CO of the one in Virginia, he told me about the time and dedication to that series. Not ready for that yet. It has 100 traditional Micro's that you can log and even record a hit or miss. Each one also includes a location on the game board. Then once you sink all of the ships, you have the coords for a puzzle, which each is named after one of the ships. When you go to those, each one gives you parts of coordinates for the final FLEET COMMAND. So that is 100 traditionals, and 6 puzzles. My thoughts for my next game are going to be like this. Monopoly: The board has 4 sides Each property will have a traditional. IN that traditional, (most likely a micro film can or something) there will be a partial to the coords for the Railroad on that side of the board. Each RR is a puzzle. Find all 4 Railroads, that will give you the coords to the utilities. Find the utilities and it will give you the coords to the final. Considering calling it "Free Parking" This will be at least a Ammo can, but most likely a 5 gallon bucket. Oh, and as a bonus, I am planning on launching 4 tracker-bugs. 2 Chance and 2 Community Chest. There will be a request that they stay in NC, preferably east of I-95. Each TB will give the holder the coords to one of the RR. making things easier. Does anyone have any information on these: Go, Scrabble, Cribbage, Bridge, Poker, and Petals Around the Roses. Any other games that you think would be good to do.
  4. So I have made one game based on the Clue Board Game. It has received some good response. Who Dunnit? I have plans for another cache series based on the game, Monopoly. Has anyone done any other board games? What were they. I am always up for new ideas.
  5. My apologies. I just find that too many people like to down grade the Scouting program. A lot of times too many people like to complain without offering a solution. My suggestion for becoming a Meritbadge counselor is not hard to do and can actually be a little fun.
  6. Before you make quotes like this, understand that the purpose of meritbadge counselor is to get the youth out and working with adults not directly associated with the troop or even BSA in general. It is meant to get the youth to try something new. And you comment about building birdhouses and bridges is rather insulting. There is so much more to scouting. The skills and leadership experience goes so far beyond building arts and crafts. Please learn about the program, and you may actually find that you like teaching the meritbadge.
  7. If the caches are not being maintained, then the Merit Badge Counselor is not doing their job. The requirement states that they must have a 6 month maintenance plan. I think that the best way for this to work is to set it up near the meeting place. I am the district counselor for district. I also have about half the troop working on the badge. Our cache for the troop is behind the scout hut. Easy find. It was originally an ammo can. Got stolen. Now it is a sealed canister. I tell the boys that are working on it to check it during the meetings. We look at the logs, check trackables and add swag as needed. Don't fault the scouts for poor mb counselors. The cache was created under my name so it would not be lost b by a one and done hider. If you believe that the quality of the meritbadge program is poor in your area, sign up to teach it. It will not cost you anything, and all you will have to do is take a youth protection class online (about 20-30 minutes) This is my suggestion. I ensure that the meritbadges that I sign off on are complete according to the requirements. There are some that do not do it that way.
  8. But they did Ustream the event and apparently allowed some people to make "brief appearances" from afar. Personally, I think armchair attendance is cheesy. and it was their event. so whats the big deal? (i guess the "you play it your way and i'll play it my way" doesnt apply when you all in these forums dont agree with it.) You're serious? "it was their event, what's the big deal?" Can I show pornographic videos at my next event because it was "mine"? I know you're highly combative and like to think you're going at it with the the whole forum, but it's not just "us" not agreeing with it. It's the policies of Groundspeak. And they are listing these events on Groundspeak's listing service. Don't want any controversy, and trouble with Groundspeak or it's reviewers? List them somewhere else, which could even be your own website. I'm a Facebook hata. You know, kind of like you're a forum hata? But from what I'm told, many many impromptu unofficial Geocaching events are organized on there. I guess you don't get a smiley on the world's largest Geocaching website if you watch video of your Facebook friends at a sports bar though. The original purpose of, from what I can understand, was for those DGS members, who are active cachers, could log events and see friends and family while deployed. Not to mention still be part of the fun. Although not there in person, the did participate in their own way.
  9. Here is what I have ffound from the times I have interacted and found caches by the DGS. And yes, I once thought differently, but was quickly corrected. - They promote quality caches. They do not like the standard LPC micro. Ir the Bison tube hidden on a branch 500 yards into the woods, when an ammo can would have been good. - They promote fun events. I went to an event at a local country club and they had a swimming area, provided a great cook out, and had lots of fun. - They place new and interesting caches. The like to hide caches in underground tunnels that require crawling and searching in the dark. They have a bunch of them in Fayetteville, but as other membes have been reassigned by the military, the list of locations grows. - They have often very difficult caches. Puzzles that require time and effort to figure out. No just a simple convert letters. They put a lot of time and energy. - They also have interesting ways of figuring out placements http://coord.info/GC1P48H Air Dropped Cache They also have one or two that they have launched with a weather balloon, it had tracking beacons and cameras. - I think that the only thing I have heard about them "Dirtbagging" a cache is when one is published, they run out, grab the FTF, sign the log. And then wait a day or so to log online. To see the frustration of others. Kinda funny. nothing really harmful. They do not do the following to caches -Destroy -Steal -Move away from coords It is a group that allows ustream logging of events because many of them spend long times away from home in foreign countries and cannot go out logging caches. If I have made a mistake in my posting, please accept my apologies.
  10. That sounds awesome! I wish I could do that one but no doubt it's thousands of miles from my home (the ones I really want to do always are, it seems). I don't suppose you have the starting GC# on hand? I have a series in my area that i hid. Nothing special about the caches. But you have to find 5 traditional caches to get the suspects and coordinates for the final. Here is my bookmark list. http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=b977a0fa-5a8d-4a13-ac28-a33fa009482a I handle gotten several favorite points so far.
  11. Does anyone know a general research site that I can use to find out about the geological history of my area. I have been told that the area that I live in has some areas that I could use as an Earth Cache. But I am having a hard time trying to find information. If someone can point me in the right direction it would be helpful.
  12. I like Don J's. Maybe go through and name the series based on movies that talked about the nuclear crisis/attacks. Here are a couple -War Games - Like Don J said -Sum of All Fears -Dawns Early Light -Red Dawn (you have to understand the back story to remember this one) -Dr Strangelove (OK It is a Stretch) -Fail safe -Crimson TIde THose would be some suggestions
  13. Pants tucked into boots (Think Military) or socks out over the bottom of your pants. Also some good repellant, like Deep Woods Off. Spray around the cuffs of your clothes. Wear lighter colored clothes so you can see one when it hops on for a ride. But no matter what you do, you will always get a tick. Know the local ticks. Know what they look like, and what they can carry for diseases. Know what to look for if you are sick. When you come out of the woods, know how to check of them and remove them. Ticks like spots that are warm, (Groin, Arm Pits, hairline) but will attach in many areas. Get a proper tick removal tool. Removing one can be tricky. The right tool for the right job. And Like I said, know what to do to treat tick-borne disease. Check out this site - Tick Encounter
  14. I would think that college caches are ok. Here in my area we have a major university that covers A LOT of the city area, technically. It also covers the local hospital, as it is part of the university due to the medical school. If they were to eliminate all of the caches in the area, then we would have a BIG hole in the middle of town. There are a lot of caches hidden around the area. Many are some good ones. Just use common sense. I think that there should be some things that are not allowed. BUt if you tak eyou time and make it worth the trip to the area, or make it a challange, then it should be OK.
  15. I think that I have seen something like this before. YOu are required to heat a sensor up to a certain temp to unlock it. It looks pretty cool. I would only recommend that people bring a Grill Lighter. Less change that they are going to burn their fingers when they try it. Holding a standard BIC can cause some minor burns, and although minor, still hurt.
  16. I thought that VIrginia had more than one special trail. Did they close some of them down?
  17. I washed out my PB jar like already described, but I also took it a step farther. I cleaned it and then filled it with hot water and put a couple of tablespoons of baking soda in it. Enough to make the water cloudy. I let that sit for a few days and then rinsed it again. Worked so far.
  18. I use a NM log when it is something that I cannot readily fix. I usually carry around a reserve of logbooks in various sizes and styles. This way if I go through and find an interesting cache that may have a wet or full log book, I replace it. I note it in the logbook, and slip it into a baggie and place in the cache. If it is something that I cannot fix, broken Lock n Lock, then I will post a NM. That way the CO can see that I was there, there was an issue, and if possible, I tried to fix it. I have replaced film canisters on reasonable caches. Some of them are fun. I hope that if you go to one of my caches and see that there is a problem, you post a NM log and give me time to see it. I only have 11 hides right now, and they are not in a major traveled area. So as I get logs, I can look at them. As for the NA, there was a cache that was always poking at me every time i did a search on my area. A cache buddy and I had gone out there at least 4 times each to see if we could find it. We looked high and low. No luck. We were not the only ones to DNF the cache. I looked at when it was hidden and when it was last found. I also look at the CO's profile page. THis particular one had not been found in over a year, and the CO had not even logged on in 2 years. I posted a NA for it. I think they can be used in a great way. People need to get off of their high horses. What is the big deal if you cannot find a cache. Maybe the CO is just better at hiding then yo are at seeking. Use the logs right and we will have a good game.
  19. I was thinking about something today. Every year my county has the NC Sweet Potato Festival. Large event that covers 2 - 3 days. My Cub Scout pack has had a booth at this event in the past and had decent success with it. I have a question about events like this and geocaching. WOuld it be possible to host an event during the festival. What I would do is to have our scout booth set up, and mark the coordinates. We know where the festival is going to be at so that is not an issue. I would set up a table and make the event log. This way the cachers can come out throughout the day, sign the log and see the things at the festival. We have had rides in the past and there are all kinds of vendors that are available. Food and fun. Is there something that would prevent this. I think that it would be a different way of meeting cachers and having family fun at the same time. What are your thoughts?
  20. Can anyone tell me about the popularity of the Geo-Trails/Geo-Tourism in their area. I have been working on a multi and would like to include the towns tourism board and historical society. Looking to try to get a coin made for those that finish the trail. Does anyone here have any information on the increased tourism or usage. How many people have found your local geotrails.
  21. OK I have been trying to make a Wherigo cartridge. I think that there may be an issue with my computer. I will have to try again later and see if it works. I am thinking about making it into a multi with virtuals and needed data collection. Maybe later I can go through and make a Wherigo and set a separate final. I am not trying to down play the Wherigo caches. Just seems that right now I am having some computer issues.
  22. If I have it to where you go through and walk along gathering the required information, would it be a multi or a puzzle. I am thinking that the Wherigo is going to have to wait. I seem to be having technical difficulties with the program. I may have to try again later today.
  23. I think that what I may do is go through and first get the way-points for all of the houses. The tour also includes some old business buildings and the courthouse. The descriptions include things like the architecture of the houses and who they may have been built for. I like the idea of doing both. I might start with a multi. And let that run while I work on building the Wherigo. What are the thoughts on that. The reason why I was thinking about holding off on the Wherigo is because I have never tried making one and will have to look over the software and see what some of the specs are. What kind of saturation requirements or zone requirements there are. I have been getting a lot of feedback. I am still trying to figure it out, but I just need to get things together. I just need to go and get the way-points once this storm passes and start.
  24. Well, to give you some ideas on what you are looking for when doing this, most, if not all (I will double check) the houses have very visible placards on them. You can walk, enjoy the tour and history lesson, and find a cool cache in the end. I think I will go through and start working on this series soon. I might even see if the historical society wants to get in on this and make a coin or path tag.
  25. I saw a video where someone was making one that floated just at water level, even when the tether-line was slack. He filled the bottom with enough concrete to get the ballast to the right levels. The cache was in a pipe and it floated in a vertical position. the top of the cache only stuck about 1" above the water. As for what you are looking for. Maybe a nalgene bottle. check the buoyancy in your tub to make sure you have enough weight to sink the cache. Also consider good string/rope to hold it to the shore line.
