  1. So I picked up a few TBs all on one day, but since then (2 weeks ago) I twisted my ankle and haven't been able to get out much, and when I have they have been micros. So I feel bad about having 3 TBs, is it ok to just stop at a cache I know where it is and I know its large and just drop them all in it? Is that better than holding onto them until I can move them some where more interesting?
  2. I've had the tracks enabled since the update came out. I like it, it was one of my favorite things about my classic yellow etrex. The interval doens't seem as nice as on the etrex, which would log the location either based on distance since previous or time since previous http://users.tpg.com.au/benj2005/gps/etrexFAQ.htm#tracks references a proprietary algorithm to maximize accuracy and minimize redundant records. On the GC, you can only set it for time based and only 5,10,20 or 60 seconds interval. Other than that I haven't had any trouble accessing them. They get written out to a gpx file in \Tracks\ I've noticed that when I have them included on the map it does seem to impact performance, which isn't surprising, it is another thing to write to the screen and update. I find that if I set the orientation of the screen to north (instead of direction of travel) that seems to help overall performance.
  3. That's the one I get, plus a beep when he gps lock onto the sattelite. Do you have the volume set high and the mute disabled. I really like my GC by the way.
  4. There isn't much audio on it. A few beeps here and there unless I am missing something.
  5. I think the real question is "Why do you ask about their backups?"
  6. We (my wife. my son and I) each have our own login, and we just logout and log in with a different username when we log stuff. Most browsers will let you store multiple username/password for a single site.
  7. I wish I knew greasemonkey well enough to do this. Any chance of getting it to add a search box to the left nav to enter in a GC code so you can always search for a GC code no matter what page you are on. I personally created a search.xml file to add to firefox search engines so I can easily search for GC code from forum posts, select, right click and serch
  8. How are you using it on the blackberry? I use CacheSense on my tour 9630 and that import gpx files right in. What application on the blackberry are you using? I would think gpsbabel or gsak could do something .
  9. Did you update your GC with a new pocket query? Just activating the premium account doesn't update anything on the Exporist. You need to create a new pocket query (while you have your premium membership) and load that onto your unit. If there are any premium caches, then they will show up.
  10. Did you update the firmware? There were problems with the first 1.0 version of the firmware. Does the compass keep spinning or does it stop? Sometime the unit has a problem processing the geocaches or the waypoints an will just spin and spin You can try the following. 1. Pull the batteries and replace with fresh ones. 2. Connect the usb (with the explorist off). 3. Hold menu+up+power and the unit will start up in disk access mode (keep them all pressed in until you get a menu on the screen). 4. Once it starts up, browse the device in the windows explorer (or mac equivalent) 5 Go into \\Geocaches folder and move all the files in there to your pc (make a folder in your my documents to store them). 6.Go into the \\Waypoints folder and move all these file as well (keep them separate from the geocache files from above) 7. Eject the device and pull the usb plug and hopefully the unit will reboot normally Once the unit is working normally, I would recommend getting the latest (1.4) firmware. You can download it from Magellan web site. There's a moderately active explorist list at http://www.exploristforum.com/ though I imagine most of them are also around here as well. I had the same problems with my explorist, I had to RMA mine twice, but all that aside, for the price, I love all the features it has. Someday I'll maybe upgrade to a more expensive unit, but I really like this one for now.
  11. The etrex is a perfectly good GPSr, but if you plan to use it I would recommend getting the data cable and GSAK. That way you can transfer your caches (500) to your device (easy to do with GSAK) using the %drop2 name. You will have to keep a paper copy for your caches, hits and logs unless you have a smart phone that can handle that. I used the ipod macro to generate Notes for my old ipod that I could then read in the field. I eventually bought the new explorist GC ($200) which, despite a for issues, I really like. 10k caches with logs and hints and everything stored on it. Decent performance and not a bad price.
  12. So you have a Snow White already near you. I saw a cache in another city (solar system series) that I thought would be a fun way to place some caches. Each on the right proportion away from the next. Is it ok to copy someone else's ideas?
  13. I've seen a similar one around my area (can't thing of the code) where there are 4 travel bugs or something and each has part of the coords for a final. Not technically a multi but more of a series?
  14. http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx maybe one of them can answer your question in more detail Ohh... that felt a little like an RTFM... Honest, I did read the guidelines. I can't even claim I started skimming at that point It's the first bloody sentence. Can I retract for stupidity, or do some kind of penance? Maybe sharpen all the cache pencils for a month
  15. I mean other than graciously donate their valuable time to keep the rest of us happy, as a reviewer do they search out and find every cache posted to them for review, or is it mostly done with general local knowledge? I'm not complaining (our local reviewer is awesome and must never sleep) but I'm just curious as I just posted my first geocache.
  16. Be prepared to give up after a couple DNF (possibly even 1). My 4 year old loves "Treasure Hunting", even having to drive from one spot to another, but once we can't find one, it's all over, no more treasure hunting. I actually made a small (pill bottle sized) cache that I keep with us, and if we really strike out, I'll drop it for him to find. A little white lie but it keeps him interested.
  17. I have an Explorist GC and I like it, despite some of the issues with the initial firmware. I like the paperless caching, the searching and logging (easily uploaded to gc.com for posting). I looked at the Endura, and truth be told, it looks nice too but I haven't found anyone where I live that carries them so I can check it out.
  18. If you load your caches using either VP or GSAK, it will download the files that are in the description (and maybe gallery) and make them available in the cache detail page.
  19. Yeah... looks a little dodgy. Plus wouldn't you just want to use GSAK and export to your devices POI format. That's all I did. Create 3 filters, one for all found caches, one for not found of type mystery/unknown and one for not found not mystery. Write a macro that load each filter, saves the poi file (I have a tomtom) and use a different icon for each. Now when I am on my car, I see the geocache icon for ones I haven't found, a gray scale for the ones I have, and a question mark for the mystery ones (that way I don't try to get them when I don't have access to the website to see the puzzle).
