  1. The route calculation is about 3 times faster on the 60C than on the V. I trialed the 60C for my favorit GPS shop and had it sitting next to my GPS V, same Euro CS5 maps loaded, same route, same everything. Screen updates are also a bit faster. And (what else did you expect!): uploading maps via USB is also faster... 56Mb in 10 minutes, compared to 19Mb in 45 minutes.
  2. The 60C also doesn't have a Via routing... which I really like on my V.
  3. If there will be a GPS VI (and I sure hope so!), it would have to be better than the 60C and the 76C. That would mean: - more than 115Mb of memory (use a 256Mb chip and we get over 200Mb) - USB (or USB2) - color screen at the same reolution as the V has now (more than the 60C and 76C) - faster processor (at least as fast as the 60C) - at least 10.000 trackpoints It would be cool if they added a Bluetooth connection. If they would discontinue the V line, I would be more into the 76C than the 60C I guess... memory is all. =8- )
  4. Nice to hear my FAQ is actually usefull. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  5. Using the procedure from the FAQ page, they is almost no risk at all. I again did it to 2.50 yesterday without a problem. And yes, if everything fails, just reload the original unpatched firmware file and you're okay. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  6. Bill_sumrall, thank you for point the (my) GPS V FAQ out to him. I recently did it with 2.40 and without problem. But follow the FAQ, since it is a multiple step thing. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  7. He has a V and thus has Mapsource, which will also do the job just fine. Make sure to delete all numbered ones before you upload the renamed ones. This can be done in one go, see http://www.elsinga.org/gps5faq for details. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  8. They both need power, that's one thing. The V derives the direction from it's movement, which is sufficient most of the time (only when stationary it doesn;t know where N is). The altimeter I find useless... but I live in perhaps the flattest country on the planet (the Netherlands, all heights are in negative numbers... one hill exempt). -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  9. I know from personal experience that the V uses the speed to tell when to beep for a turn. I do a lot of highway driving here in the Netherlands (Europe) and the V beeps at 3 kms ahead when at 120km/h, but at 3.2 or so kms when doing 140km/h. I guess it's beeping about 1.5 minutes before the turn. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  10. I'm the maintainer of the GPS V FAQ site, you might find some nice things there. And: additions are always welcome! -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  11. It involves desoldering the 32MB memorychip inside, reading it's contents, programming it to a 128MB chip and soldering it inside the V. This is done now and looks promising. In between either you need to reprogram the 128Mb chip to set it's size so Mapsource knows how large it is, or patch Mapsource to tell it how large your V's memory is. This is currently tested. So, all looks good, but there s no final product yet. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  12. You also might want to look at the GPS V FAQ page. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  13. Remember it takes 30 seconds per sat to get a locked bar. If you move under an open sky (prairie), movement will not be bad. But if you are in the city or woods, it will take longer dus to the connection fading in and out. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  14. quote:Originally posted by Criminal:I upgraded from the III+ to the V as well. My problem is that I can't remember how to do a track-back with my V. I also miss the round compass page too. Trackback is explained on the GPS V FAQ site in detail. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  15. You might want to check out the GPS V FAQ site. And the beauty of the V is that you can have it route you to the cache area in the fastest way and then go into off-road mode to geocache. Ik like my V very much. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  16. All public versions of the GPS V frimware (thus not the beta's) are on my GPS V page, where you can also find the GPS V FAQ page. I also have all beta's, but not donwloadable. There is only one beta worth using though, 2.12beta. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  17. As a novice user, you might want to try the GPS V FAQ site, which is an add-on to the (somehwat vague and outdated) manual. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  18. Here in the Netherlands, we have the "Elfstedentocht", an iceskating race following the eleven cities of Friesland, one of our provinces. It also is a geocache, with microcaches in every city. I've done it, on a cache event, along with 15 others and thought is was great! -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  19. You could then mark all current commercial caches like that and approve commercial (looking) caches. And Jeremy could only approve commercial caches from members, or make a rule that any truely commercial cache also creates a nice rebate for GPS showing groups. So, if you want to have a commercial cache in your movie cinema that will be fine but you have to give everyone that shows up with a GPS or uses the word "geocaching" a 20% rebate on admission. Every time, always. Or, donate 20% of the admission fee to geocaching.com for every log. Also: admission fees should be made very clear upfront. Ofcourse, no one is forced to log those caches. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  20. You move the cursor to the unit denominator (km in my case) and press Enter. Then you can change it to meters. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
  21. quote:Originally posted by Bob K.:As of 3Mar03, the new GPS V beta 2.12 allows you to choose the "project waypoint" measurement units. But HOW? I can't seem to enable it... Not on the Project Waypoint window itself, not by pressing Menu there, not in the Setup. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org

  23. Hi! This year I plan to go to Tenerife, but there are no digital maps for my Garmin available for the island (only City Select 5 has some coverage around Puerto de la Cruz or so). So I intend to create my own Mapsource map for Tenerife, but for that I need as many waypoints and tracks on Tenerife as possible. I hope the geocaching comunity can help me. If you have tracks and/or waypoints from Tenerife, I would like to have them. If possible with some comments added to them, so I can calibrate my raster map with the waypoints and use the tracks as verification that the calibration is correct. Any format will do, but Mapsource or Oziexplorer format is preferred. Ofcourse, the map I intend to create will be downloadable after completion. =8-) And I will gladly answer any questions you have. Thanks in advance, Robert Elsinga =8-) http://www.elsinga.org/gps tenerife (at) elsinga.org -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org

  25. I had a poll for a week or two (see www.elsinga.org/gps5wishlist) and mailed the results to Garmin. -- Robert Elsinga =8-) geocaching (at) elsinga.org
