  1. Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer Scout. Had to wear uniform on den and pack meeting days to school. Had official knife hanging from clip on belt. Nobody in school ever fainted. One day brought my new official scouting hatchet to school on a den meeting day. Nobody blinked an eye. Try and let that happen now! Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  2. Paperwork! I'm treasurer of Wisconsin Geocaching Association and will need to report on the treasury from time to time. I could used a simple Excel spread sheet for it but am looking for either a nice template or software suitable for a small, not for profit club. When I get all this treasurer stuff done, I'm heading to the woods!!! Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  3. I believe I downloaded it and SuperWABA as directed. My Sony kept locking up after an error message about something wrong with Superwaba. Before I can read it all, I get a fatal error screen covering it. After a few tries, I uninstalled both programs. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  4. Just tried the new maps for the first time. My impression is favorable, though they will not change my using Mapsource and USAphotomaps. I checked one of mine, Missing In Monches, and it is shown on the opposite side of the river that it is actually placed on and the park boudaries are wrong. Not a big deal but is the reason that I will still be using my previous procedures. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  5. I've been in favor of codewords and verification numbers for a long time. Some of us wanted it that a codeword would have to be entered to be able to log a cache. The idea of it was to save mailing the owner of a virtual some verification in order to make the log. A real pain to do and a pain to have to respond to in some cases. It got frustrating to suggest and request this and many other ideas only to seldom or never get a reply on them. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  6. I have two that are member only. Both are in sensitive areas that I only want serious cachers to visit. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  7. I'd also carry some radio transmitter with me too. It's illegal, but I'd consider an aviation transceiver so I can communicate on 121.9. Short of a sat uplink, that's the best chance of talking to someone. Give them the coords from the GPS and a chopper will be there in no time. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  8. I can't buy an empty, harmless rifle at Walmart without jumping though hoops but my 6 year old grandson can buy a cutlery set in housewares. As a cub scout, on meeting days and pack meeting days, it was required to wear the uniform in school. Part of the uniform was the pocket knife hung from the belt by a clip. One day I had saved enough money to buy an official scout hatchet. I took it to school the day of a den meeting. Nobody made a big deal of it. The homeroom teacher knew of it. Kid's are still responisible enough to do this. Its the irresponsible adults that have tolerated the bad kids instead of kicking their butts out of school and the parents too busy working towards a coronary rather than supporting their kids in scouting. 9. Mean would imply intentional hazards or difficulties that are not forwarned in the cache page. Mean would be not being honest with the terrain and difficulty ratings. Mean could also mix with thoughtlessness, such as some of the useless clues people spend time deciphering which are of no help. Mean would also be ignoring DNF posts and not doing maintenance to assure all that things are located where they should be. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  10. It will make me sound ancient but I wish I had one when I was flying around in my dad's old Aeronca 7AC. Only navigation tools I had was the compass, my sectional and the slip stick. Did finally get a hand held radio but couldn't hear it most of the time unless I throttled back. I did fly Skylanes with a full panel so did appreciate the VORs and ADF. If I was still doing it, I'd be using my Garmins! Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  11. I bought a Subaru also. Except it's a Forester. Got it because of the occasional AWD need for geocaching. I used to drive any family car I had on the backroads of Wisconsin. Never had much trouble. One place I did wish I had the Forester was in Reno Nevada. I was on business and had a rental Chrysler Concorde. Put four big guys in it and try to drive up a mountain road to a geocache. Not a good idea! I wish I had Gummer's Power Wagon! Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  12. I don't mean to be insulting but he lost me 1/3rd of the way into the message.
  13. Looks like many have evolved as I have. I used to bee line. Once I proudly announced that I found a cache in ten minutes where others taking the trail had a 45 minute hike. I learned my lesson on one hunt when I took the short way in rather than the trail. It was mostly brambles all the way and I pretty much ruined a good leather motorcycle jacket. Got to the cache and heard voices. It was people walking the trail that was only a few feet from the cache!! Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  14. I'll bite. I assume you have an owners manual. If not, at least Garmin has online manuals for their units that you can read and download. You shouldn't need help with the most basic functions but for some of the more advanced ones, this would be understandable. And, of course, we'd need to know what brand and model you have along with some specific questions. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  15. I posted this here rather than on the geocaching.com discussion page because I'm thinking of putting them into the cache description rather than a click off option for creating a page, thought that would not be a bad idea. I don't know what GPS's have proximity alarms but the Garmin V is very popular in my area. I imagine proximity waypoints were created for marine hazards. But, since no GPS has been designed primarily for geocaching, this could certainly be a feature for manufacturers to add and for customers to request when looking for a new, better featured unit.
  16. I'm hurting today! Yesterday I took a nasty fall on a fence wire that was on the ground. After that I had to ride my motorcycle over one hundred miles back home. Not too comfortable! This got me thinking about a local cache where everybody in the logs says to look out for a fence. I'm wondering about adding such known hazard waypoints into the cache page and using them as a proximity warning for the benefit of people with that capability, such as my Garmin V. 17. I suspect such a cache might have trouble being approved here, but why not post it on a local website? It will, after all, be local in nature. I've thought of having a local group of cachers doing private hunts. It would add to the security of the cache and open more possibilities of places to hide them. For example. I might hide one on private property where the owner would be ok with a select few going there. Just keep in mind not to reference www.geocaching.com or the word geocaching or geocache, so it in no way shows a connection with this site. IMO. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  18. It took me a while to come across DW's story but we share enough interests and he has shared enough about himself that not only do I believe that it happened but I believe that it might even be true, the reincarnation that is. I keep a picture of my first Husky, Kanuck, here to remember him from time to time. My present Husky, Kanook, is not the same dog but I do believe that there must be more to such an animal's existance that to simply be born, live and die. I'd like to explore the Indian spirituality some more as that which I was raised with has been shown over and over again to be built with lies and deceit. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  19. You can enter text by going to the waypoint screen where your choices are DELETE GOTO MAP OK Press MENU and a text entry screen will come up. You have to enter text via the rocker so it isn't easy, but it does show up on mapsource and easygps. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  20. I think anyone that has used a Garmin V for a time will consider it the ultimate GPS for the combination of geocaching and automotive navigation. Check them out on ebay and you will see that they are available for under $400 now. If you don't like it, it will be easy to sell for probably what you paid for it. If you do like it, you won't have wasted your money on a lesser model. In my case, I began with a Garmin eMap. Still have it and it is a good unit, but it was a waste of money. But, you don't know all this when starting out. So, you asked for recommendations, this is my opinion. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  21. What's next? No loitering in the park? Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  22. You might want to visit www.wi-geocaching.com and post your note. I don't know how many of the regulars visit here now that we have a gracious donor for our state association website. Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  23. quote:Originally posted by Moe the Sleaze:A female co-worker was appalled at our talk, took the jar home and released the ticks in a vacant lot near her home! Stuff like that makes me put people like that in a category not much higher than the bugs. I wonder if she's appalled at spraying to prevent West Nile virus? It reminds me of a racing commercial going on now. A poor performing car is said to be bruising bugs. Maybe those slow pokes in the left lane are PETBat members? {PEOPLE for the ETHICAL TREATMENT of BUGS AND TICKS) Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin
  24. quote:Originally posted by kd4adc:I took my GPS on a trip last week. It was cool knowing we were at 37000 feet doing 540 MPH. from my window seat, most landmarks were comfortably seen at about 6 miles away. Not too good considering straight down was 7 miles away!!
