  1. Depends on what you are comparing it to. My first GPS was a Garmin eMap so in comparison to that, yes, I'd be sleeping with it at night. But, I also have a Garmin V and in comparison with my 60c, was disappointed by some things and delighted with other things. Sitting in my living room, I found the V and the 60 were equal in signal strength. I've also lost lock with it just sitting on the passenger seat. I've had that happen with the eMap but never had it happen with the V. Then again, the V seldom sat there because I'd rotate the screen and antenna and it would sit either on the dash or a ledge in front of the guages. But I'm slowly favoring the 60 over the V. So yes, in comparison to anything else out there with the exception of the V, I'd say the 60 is the geocaching king.
  2. I have both models and the 60c is notably faster in that regard. I'm slowly getting used to not having it plopped on a ledge on my dashboard and since the recent software upgrade, some missing features have been added. It takes a little getting used to by the V owners but soon the V will be gathering dust, or in my case, sit in the holder on my Gold Wing.
  3. FWIW, I didn't like Vue. Too cramped and expensive. Didn't like Escape. Too Expensive and lousey fuel economy. It came down to a Honda CR-V or Subaru Forester. I kinda wanted the Honda because I've got a Gold Wing and had other Hondas. I bought the Forester. Stronger engine, better rated fuel economy, proven AWD and price was better than Honda given the standard features. Japanese, but partly owned by General Motors. I've had mine two years and still think I made the right choice.
  4. After caching with a backpack, I find that it is useful for carrying an ammo box but very hot and inconvenient when wanting to get at the binoculars, camera and trading items. I decided a vest would be the way to go. I checked the local outdoors stores here and they don't have a good selection. What better place to get a recomendation of a brand and model than from you good people! I see they don't come cheaply and $50 is not out of line. I'm looking for function and comfort. Thanks!
  5. It was nice to have the update in around three minutes rather than having to take the dog for a walk and still have the upload going.
  6. I'm betting that there will be no such thing as an improved V. I'm thinking that Garmin is wanting V owners to buy a 60 if they are in to off road activities and also to buy the new Street Pilot if they are serious into road navigation. I'm getting more acustomed to using the 60 in the 4 wheelers, so I'm not as hot to buy the street pilot. If I have some money to burn, I'd like to have the Street Pilot's inertial navigation system in my business van. The dead reckoning feature facinates me.
  7. I've heard of the detour function on the V but never found it until I, uh, read the manual. You have to page to that funky direction screen listing all the turns and times and then select menu and detour and other options pop up. I tried it the other night and could have used it a few times in the past. I'd like to see it added to my 60C.
  8. I have each and never noticed the change. What I don't like is the MARK button. Also don't like the mini navigation screen if using more than two data fields.
  9. To switch from follow road mode to off road is a little clunky compared to the V. Try this. Hit page once from the navigation screen and that should take you to the direction screen that has all the arrows and turns. Hit menu and one of the options should be recalculate. Hit enter and it should give you a choice of follow road or off road. Otherwise you have to hit Find, Geocache and hope the one you want is close by.
  10. I bought the C. While I had wanted an electric compass, I get the impression that it isn't as great as I had hoped it to be and I already am adept at using my pocket compass. I have no need for an altimeter and being a pilot, know that it must be adjusted frequently for pressure changes as weather masses move through. The 3D altimeter in the 60C is good enough for what I need.
  11. I sure haven't! And if there is to be some improved V, a lot of us V owners are going to be very upset seeing as many of us have bought GPSMAP60's. Which I might add, has some very nice improvements to it but after a couple weeks of comparison, I believe the V is still better for navigation with the sole exception that the 60 recognizes going off route and recalculates faster.
  12. An eMap was my first GPS and I found many caches with it. I believe it to be durable as a few times I have slipped on ice and it went flying only to suffer no damage. I've caches in pouring rain and many drizzles. Just don't let water go through the battery compartment and into the data chip slot. No big deal. I keep it for when I have someone come with me on a hunt otherwise I use my Garmin V and now my GPSMAP60. Yeah, I'm bragging.
  13. I've had a V for over a year and got my 60C a few days ago. I'll sum it up like this. If you don't have a V, the 60 is a fantastic unit. If you have a V and make frequent use of it for traveling, the 60 is a disappointment! The 60 is not the V with most of the improvements that we V owners were looking for. Garmin did some shrewd marketing here as the V owner will need to buy two new units to gain the features we've long been wanting. If you don't have a copy of City Select and want to do a mix of geocaching and road work, I think the Garmin V Deluxe is a VERY good buy right now. As it is, I STILL want a Garmin V with more memory and USB. The color screen and geocaching feature is nice, but I could do without them.
  14. Oh, I'm going to be in Heaven! I just got done with a trip to upper Michigan and have to go to the south side of Chicago tomorrow. As usual, around a half hour to load up 18 megs of maps and still not enough to cover the area I need.
  15. I just this summer put the Garmin V's mount on my Gold Wing and it works out well for my puttering around. I've just ordered a GPSMAP60C and will have to see about how it would mount on the machine. I expect the V will end up on the motorcycle more now than it ever has.
  16. What is the advantage of National Geographic Topo over Mapsource's topo?
  17. I'm undecided also. The barometric altimeter is of no value to me but I frequently use my hand-held compass. Having that built in and locking the display would be nice, but I could still easily continue to use my hand-held compass. Decisions...decisions...
  18. I think the best thing, for now, is if you have a local or state organization, make it known that you cache with your dog and encourage others with dogs to keep requesting AT LEAST if an area is ok for dogs. Kanook and I have had to pass up many caches when we come across no dogs signs. Sometimes I come back without him or leave him in the car for a short time but yes, it'd be good if the cache pages recognized dog's needs. As an alternative, you could scope out caches with USAPhotomaps and get a pretty good idea if the area looks good for a dog hike.
  19. I'd be of no help. I've had two dogs. The first was Kanuk and the present is Kanook!
  20. Wind chill doesn't count! I did Carpe Cache when the thermometer in my Subaru showed 7 degrees F(-14C) and the LCD display on my Garmin V was faded and sluggish. I don't recall what the wind was. Even Kanook, my Husky, was acting cold!
  21. Here is one stat I'd like to see. This should interest people not concerned about the numbers. What cache has the most waypoints? Here in Wisconsin we've had one with 19 waypoints for a couple years and now one with 22 tops the numbers. I spent the better part of two days on that one. Hard to run up the numbers that way!
  22. I'm puzzled too. I changed two of my searches to be sent to my hotmail account. I did get one yesterday, but it wasn't my most useful one. I created a whole new search last night and as is often the case, expected it to show this morning. It didn't. What we are asking for is communication. Hey, if there is a problem, let us know. If it is puzzling and will take time to correct, let us know. It it is on some other end and they are not cooperating, let us know. As others have said, it doesn't appear to be only Road Runner. I can also appreciate that these searches are resource consuming. However, I and many others would like them returned soon after we submit them. Often I'll have a business trip come up and I only have a short time to do a search so I can do some caching out of state in my free time. If the site needs more or better equipment to do this and more money is needed. I will pay more! Geocaching is my main hobby and source of excersize. Lord knows I've spend a ton of money on radios, motorcycles and flying. What's some more money so we get what we want here?
  23. Nope, and I check to make sure the selections were in order. Is anyone having their quiries sent to a hotmail address? Perhaps they are using some funky filtering? However, I still get all of my watch list notifications. Hmm, I just had a thought. I use the automatic spam filtering so I'm going to disable it to see what happens in the next 24 hours.
  24. I changed my send to account to my normal hotmail and still have not received one in two days. I wouldn't have be removed from a query list because of all the road runner bumps, would I?
  25. Tell me about wierd! It's been a week now and I've found out Road Runner suddenly started blocking them. I made a new query and had it go to my regular address, Hotmail, and still none have come through. To add to the mystery, a few days ago it was as if my cookies were not being recognized and I had to log in where I never had to. Fortunately there are no recent new caches in my area but I'm very concerned about not getting the one to my Hotmail account.
