  3. robert, congratulations on getting garmin USB devices working. that's a great accomplishment. i have a somewhat related question: what would it take to be able to upload maps without garmin's mapsource software? i realize this might be a terribly farfetched idea, but i'm not familiar enough with the pieces to know which are proprietary and which are not (and which are reasonable to try and reverse-engineer and which are not). some things are obviously proprietary: the way maps are stored/indexed in the garmin memory the wire protocol to write the garmin memory but some i just don't know much about: is/are there a standard map format(s) that one could reasonably expect the garmin to store in its memory? are there other barriers that i haven't mentioned here? thanks for any insight!
  4. Hi all. I'm a GPS/Geocaching newbie. I have a macintosh running OSX and am considering getting a garmin etrex vista. after reading posts here and googling it sounds like i will be able to transfer waypoints to/from the vista/mac, but on OSX i can only upload maps to the vista using virtual PC and garmin's mapsource software. is that a true statement? thanks for any help. nall.
  5. actually, reading the bark article got me interested in taking up geocaching with my dogs. is there any way to determine if a given cache is in a dog-friendly location? great article!
