While Geocaching in the Woods..
kayak-cowboy replied to RhinoInAToga's topic in General geocaching topics
While out riding horses, my fellow riders always had me out front for this very reason. I was on the tallest horse and being 6'2" they thought I would get all the spiderwebs cleared............NOT.......I always seen them coming and ducked to the side and they would end up riding through it. HA!!!! As for the "tree slapping" we always leave room between each other while in heavy vegetation. Closed ranks when back in the open. -

Premium membership snobbery
kayak-cowboy replied to rollobluster's topic in General geocaching topics
I also looked at the map around some of his/her? finds. If you scroll south there is hundreds of PMO caches. I can see some of his frustrations. A lot of the PMO caches could very easily be regular member caches. Several inside of parks, etc...... I can understand a PMO cache for something special or on your own property. But looking at that map there is definitely an over abundance of PMO caches. There is still a ton of regular caches also. Just my $.02 worth............ -
KABOOM!!!! Another one bites the dust. http://www.indystar.com/article/201104212133/LOCAL18/104210490

Go to your Profile page and look for the box on the right side that has "Search Options" as the header. Then you can click on the "search for nearest geocaches" button. Use the one that has (filter out finds). This will give you all the caches closest to you that you haven't found. Search Options [Map It!] Search for nearest geocaches from your home location (filter out finds). View nearby benchmarks View nearby waymarks Update Home Location Advanced Search

First thing is to find a good hide spot and place the container. Then on your GPS there is a button that called "MARK". Hit that button and it will mark the waypoint for that container. Make sure to save the waypoint by hitting "OK" or save. Walk away from the hide and see how close the "coords" get you back to the container. You may have to do this several times to get the best set of "coords". Move on to the next hide spot that you want to use, and repeat the above instructions. You can download all the waypoints to an "off line" data base like GSAK for storage until you need the coords again. ........www.gsak.net is the web address to this very good program. Of course as you already stated and before someone else jumps in. Geocaching will not approve geacaches placed on Elementary and Middle school property. Which doesn't really matter in this case as it is just for a temporary school lesson.

This is already being done in a few areas. Not every month though. A group of cachers get together for some type of breakfast (donuts) at the trail head before going on a hike. There is no need to require going on the hike to get credit, just show up to the event. There has been as many as 60 people show up to some of the "trail mixes" in our area. Plan it and people will come.

I'm glad that it is not just me. Hopefully GS gets this fixed soon.

Encroachment on private property? Safety issue?
kayak-cowboy replied to sanssheriff's topic in General geocaching topics
palmetto, Thank you for your response here and in the reviewer forum. I do appreciate the time and effort that you guys as reviewers donate to our sport. I didn't realize how far off the cartographer was on this map. If it were actually where the line was drawn, it would be between the highway and the railroad with no access. If you look at this description you will see that this is an "Historic park reaching about 200 yards along Pioneer Avenue", you can also see the sign at the east end of the park is on the north side of Pioneer Rd. (a cache is hidden here), as well as the description of where the new blocks have been placed "along the south boundary between the park and the railroad tracks. My cache is within the city park known as Bryan Park. John in Valley Forge, Here is a screen shot of the tax parcel along with the owner information showing this area to belong to the City of Montesano.. The left photo was taken from the east end looking west and the photo on the right was taken from the west looking east. The park across the street is John Vessey Memorial Park. Sorry John, it took me too long to write out this post and I didn't notice your amendment. In the website history of Bryon Park it said there was Large concrete blocks put along the border of the park. They was placed between the park and the rail road. Can you get photos of where these blocks are in comparison as to where the cache is located? It could actually be the only way to get this cache published. -
It is unfortunate that you had to go through all the trouble that you did. Did the reviewer actually e-mail you and tell you of problems with the placements? If not you should have waited for the review process. That can be as long as 3 days. With a holiday weekend on its way it could have taken even longer. Remember that the reviewers are just volunteers, they have families, work, etc..... If you had permission for the hides there probably wouldn't have been a problem other than maybe being to close to another cache in the area.

When to use needs archived vs maintenance
kayak-cowboy replied to Catalinagrey's topic in How do I...?
The log type that you used as a DNF was the right log type. Most responsible cache hiders will check on their cache after 2 or 3 DNF's. The owner is active so they will check it out sometime. If you actually found the cache and it was wet or the container was damaged then a "Needs Maintenance" log type. "Needs Archived" is only used for extreme cases.........Long line of DNF's with out an owner check up or possibly a long time inactive player not taking care of their cache hides. -
Sorry to see you go ashnikes. Unfortunately you live in an area that is WAY over done with "Micro Spew". Come on up to Southern Indiana and enjoy some of the terrific well hid Woodland caches. (Both ammo cans and YES some Tupperware in the woods.) There is also a ton of caches only accessible by boat (kayak, canoe, motor boat). There is a terrific group of cachers up here in the area. People from all walks of life. Airline Pilots, Police Officers, Doctors, Lawyers.......etc. And all these people have different personalities. I think you would fit right in with the people in this area. So if you ever get up to Southern Indiana give me a holler, I'll show you some "must do" caches in the area. Have a good life and good luck in your future endeavors. K.C.

Can I search for caches based on D/T that I want to find?
kayak-cowboy replied to 1Buck2's topic in How do I...?
Yes........Through PQ's you can set what you want to look for: regular, multi, etc. and also by difficulty and terrain. PQ's can do quite a few things that I have only scratched the surface. Then you can pair it up with a terrific program like GSAK and do a heck of a lot more. -
Looks like I'll have to wait for that then. For now I'll stick with twice as many 500 cache PQs. 1000 waypoint PQs will go right into GSAK with out any hesitation. Works well.

That's what happened to me but Tequila didn't have any problem? Browser-specific? I'm Firefox 3.6.3. What are you? (And for those getting .zip, are you using another browser?) I use Firefox 3.6.3 version. I got the .zip on my PQ.
-
My 1000 count PQs are working now. Thanks
-
I am getting the same thing. Same here with a newly put together PQ.
-
What GPSr do you have? Most GPS units have a way to change the Icon when you find the cache. Change the Icon from a closed box to an open box will show you that you had already found the cache. Or you can delete the cache from the GPS after you find it, just make sure to write down the GC# so you can log online.
-
I just did a Zip Code search off the main Geocaching Home page and it showed all the local caches that I have found and have not found yet. All is well here.
-
WOW!!!! I'm impressed, the Head Honcho is monitoring the PQ machines today. Yep my PQ just came through. Thanks Jeremy.
-
Yep that little old "NEVER" is just laughing at me saying "you really don't want to go caching do you?" It's a good thing it is raining right now so I can wait on the PQ to generate. It seems as though this happened on another recent holiday weekend. So here we go again!!!!!!!!

14 state caching trip equipment
kayak-cowboy replied to TeamMonroes's topic in GPS technology and devices
On the laptop I would put a routing program (streets and trips) or something similar. Connect the laptop to a rooftop satellite receiver. Run some "caches along a route" PQs and load them into GSAK. Then load that info onto your routing program. With the satellite receiver hooked up to your laptop you can see where you are at and all the caches in the area. I have done this on several long trips. Works well. You can also run some localized PQs for areas of interest and where you are staying at night. -
No log info on my latest PQ. I don't have a PDA for paperless caching so it really doesn't hurt me to bad. Although I do like to delete the last 2 DNFs in GSAK before I load my GPSr.
-
Thanks for restarting the machines. I ran 2 new PQ's and they ran immediately.
