  1. I have seen a cache where they used a car antennae motor.
  2. I had the same problem. Garmin would work, Magellan 310 wouldn't. I had a computer friend come over and he got the Magellan 310 to connect through Google Chrome. I have to switch back and forth but at least I can use it now.
  3. Thanks Pup Patrol. I didn't know there were 2 types, but there is a lot I don't know on here. lol Thanks.
  4. When I go to Play>Find challenges I only get 40 or so. I know there are older challenges, like the Nebraska 93 county challenge and Centenery challenge. I want to accept the challenge but I can't find those older listings.
  5. Started with a Garmin Nuvi 1350 and used it to find my first caches. I then got a Garmin 60CSx that I still use. I recently got a Magellan eXplorist 310. I use it to look for caches at the same time as my 60CSx. I like the paperless ability it has.
  6. I get the error message too but when I go back and try it again it works.
  7. On the main page scroll way down to geocaching groups by region/state. Click on your location and see what events are coming up. I have met many local cachers this way. They make you feel very welcome at the meetings/events and will help you with any questions you have. You may even find a new geocaching buddy too. Welcome to the addiction called geocaching.
  8. It may help to know just what kinds of containers are out there. The not knowing what to look for was the hard part for me when I started. Check out these containers. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=62421&st=4450&p=4654150&hl=cool containers&fromsearch=1entry4654150
  9. I enjoy going to places I didn't know were there. Some are 15 miles from home and I never knew where "that road" went, or there was a cemetery that way, or a neat little recreation area was over the hill from where I drive by regularly. The numbers come gradually, I'm not racing anyone. The more you find, the further you have to go to find new places. Even on the days you don't find many caches, you found new territory.
  10. If you mean Premium Member it's there too for your ID.
  11. Scroll down on the forum page to check your region/state. There may be a local meeting you can attend. They will help you with any questions you have and you may find a new caching buddy too.
  12. I bought a tool at Ace hardware that I used yesterday for a cache. The tool has 4 teeth that will extend out of a cable when you push on a plunger, opens wide to grab the item you are after, and closes on it when you let up on the plunger. It worked great for reaching a bison tube hanging above me out of my reach. Getting the split ring on the bison tube to go back on the nail was a little tougher but in 3 tries I did it. I also carry a multi tool, and a swiss army knife. The swiss army knife has a cork screw on it that works well for getting rolled up logs out of containers. I have a telescoping handle with a mirror that works well for checking the bottom of railings etc. I carry duct tape in case my handle is too short and I need to use a stick taped to the handle to get the reach I need. I have a telescoping magnet with the led built in the head too. Needle nose pliers come in handy at times. You will quickly learn what you may want to have with you in various retrieval applications. I carry a back pack if I am going to be away from my truck and don't want to walk back for a tool. In the backpack I carry maintenance items for caches like: extra zip lock bags, pencils, zip ties, small diameter stiff wire, log sheets of different sizes, bison tubes, magnetic keyholders, film canisters, matchstick holders etc. I know I would appreciate someone doing a quick fix on one of my caches, saving me a trip, so I try to help them when I can too.
  13. After leaving this log on hundreds of cache pages, two things happened that I did not expect: 1. I received a lot of hate mail for being "meddlesome." (That is a polite characterization of the correspondence.) I was trying to be helpful. 2. A lot of cache owners archived their listings after reading my note, saying the reviewer made them do it. I keep re-reading the note and I don't see where the reader would get that impression. That was and will remain the last time I tried to do anything about unaddressed "Needs Maintenance" logs at my current pay level. I don't see anything there to get them riled up. If they check it out and post that it is OK or that they did correct whatever was wrong everyone is happy.
  14. Hi Bonnie, Welcome to this fun obsession called geocaching. I don't know if you have considered this idea. Here is a translation link. http://translation2.paralink.com/ There is a drop down box to translate English to German towards the top left. Then type your question, and it will translate it to German. Then Copy and Paste the translation to the German section of the forum. If there are some English speaking people on that forum they will help you out. It may work for you to connect to some new geocaching friends. Just an idea, it may not be what you were looking for. Good luck.
  15. I have no complaints with my Nuvi 1350T. Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas carry Garmin
  16. Ask any pot smoker you know how to open it. They were widely used for carrying their "stash". Or so I have heard. lol
  17. I'm sorry for your loss of a husband and mother. I have a suggestion that hasn't been brought up yet. When you click on forums, scroll way down the page, click on your state, and see where and when the people in your area meet. You will be able to ask all the questions you have on GPS's, paperless caching, maps, and maybe get invited along hunting caches. This will really give you an idea if it is something you want to spend money on now, or lose interest and your investments on later. It will also get you introduced to possible geocaching pals to go with. I can speak from experience that they will welcome you with open arms at your local meetings.
  18. Is FTF impacted by replacing a missing cache? I know FTF is not officially part of the hunt, but there certainly is a cultural basis for not offending the FTF. I have seen caches that had a new logsheet with a "Replacement Logsheet" heading on it so they would know it isn't available as a FTF.
  19. The tunnel is just as much railroad property as the tracks, the railroad built it to go over the stream. The road is called "right of way", and it is usually railroad property too. The property is normally defined by a fenceline or markers down both sides. Railroads don't like unauthorized personnel on their property because of lawsuits for injuries. In my state, a river is private property from the riverbank and extends at a right angle to the imaginary center of the river. It belongs to the landowner that has the adjoining land. If it is a navigational river, you can be on the water (boat, barge, canoe etc.) but you can not step onto a island or the bed of the river. I don't think creeks, and streams qualify as navigational and would be private property. Every state has its own laws. I would ask a LEO or at the court house for that county.
  20. I didn't have that many to use to vote for favorites but after reading the comments on another topic about favorites I went back and removed my vote on a lot of them. The saying, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." made me realize what made a certain cache my favorite, and isn't going to meet the expectations or requirements of the next person.
  21. Luckily for you there is a support group of fellow addicts. You have come to the right place, we are in this together. Totally addicted and not really wanting to find a cure. Good luck in your searches.
  22. Yep, I know what you mean. Tunnel vision blinds you to other possible spots. I had one that I just knew it had to be right there somewhere. I just happened to look up and there it was, dangling from a limb.
  23. I found this after a few clicks here and there in the Knowledge Book. You may want to check if you have this enabled. http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=184
  24. The thing that was most frustrating at first was not knowing what the cache containers looked like. After doing some searches on the internet, seeing some of the container topics and pictures in the forums, I got better. What frustrates me now and will again in the future, is giving an honest effort and not finding the cache. The next person to look after I did finds it right away. That really frustrates me.
