  1. These all indicate that the archival was wrong. I would say the lack of maintenance was wrong, not the archival.

In my experience, most caches without active owners are not archived simply because lack of an active owner, rather it's been lack of a cache being there, and no one to replace it. I've never seen my reviewer archive a cache simply because the owner is gone. Many of the caches I have found have owners that have moved, quit the game, don't maintain any of there caches, ect.

Maybe it's because the disabled cache just brought it to the attention of the reviewer?

It's just never happened this way, so I thought it was archived unnecessarily. If it's always been that the reviewer simply didn't notice it, than I am sorry, just never noticed that.

  2.

Though my opinion of North Jersey is not nearly as high as South and Central Jersey. Maybe West-North Jersey is good, with it's beautiful forests, but i'm not a huge fan of poor urban area's, especially when there is the largest city in america less than a couple miles away. <_<

Yup, nothing nice to be seen in that part of Northern New Jersey (West Orange, Eagle Rock Mtn)

Besides that thank you for thinking about the power trail again and deciding to not go through with it.

I was specifically referring the very poor urban area's directly to the west of New York. There are some really nice urban area's in that part of New Jersey which I plan on visiting, time, and time again. And there are many really nice forests in North Jersey.

I think you missed the part where I said, "Not a huge fan of poor urban areas" and when I said, "West-North jersey is good, with it's beautiful forests".

Oh, and I still do like poor urban areas, I actually just hid a cache in one in Philadelphia. Just don't like them as much as the farm land and forests.

Oh, dear. That isn't prejudice that I'm hearing? Is it? Want a million dollar condo with a view across the river to that big city, from atop the Palisades? Want to find a cache with a million dollar view of The City? Then try one of those 'poor urban areas.' There are many places in New York where I feel less safe.

Let's see: You don't like bears? You don't like 'poor urban areas'. Guess you're not going to find many of my caches. Oh, well. Each to his own.

Sometimes I make up bull crap. I actually really like poor urban area's. I actually just hid a cache in one.

Unless of course you consider this a rich area. (This is where I hid the cache).

    thearea.jpg

I also like area's with bears, and have even slept in Wharton Forest.

  3. I read this as Coldgears really meant, unnecessarily, as in, if the CO had enabled it someone could have adopted it and then it would be unnecessary to have archived it? Inferring the CO did the wrong thing by ignoring it rather than the reviewer being wrong in archiving it, but maybe I read funny............

But saying all that, as others have said you can't unarchive it so re-list it with a link. And again I too am missing the obvious reasons for

'Why can't the container be reused?'

If its because you are worried the Co might re-appear then if that happens you could simply adopt it back? No? (at a risk that they might neglect it again sure)

Edited, I have left my post standing but in writing it I see CG has proved me wrong by posting again.

Thank you, unnecessarily is the perfect word. As for reuse, I meant, when you find an ammo box, you might take it, add new swag and hide it in a new location. Relist is if the cache is in the same location and you just make a new listing.

  4. "Unjust?"

I think you're being very disrespectful of your reviewer. He doesn't enjoy archiving classic caches, none of us do, but we have rules to follow. The cache lacked an active owner. The warning note failed to change that, so archival became inevitable.

Studying the record on the cache page, including your own complaint note, I would have handled the situation identically.

If the cache were handled differently than what's prescribed by the Cache Maintenance guideline, then that might be "unjust." As it stands, though, the only injustice I'm seeing is in your OP.

I did not pass the blame to anyone. I just detailed this "tragic" loss in geocaching. I guess I should have explained my opinion on the matter, but I decided to remain neutral. If I must give my stance, you just echoed my thoughts... The CO should have enabled it, then the cache would not have been archived unjustly.

  5. (Read the log here)

There was a local cache near me. It had 69 favorites and 500+ finds. It was a true classic, a hollowed out book at a library.

    The issue?

It was archived unjust! It is still there!

I actually went to see if it was there today (I had wanted to find it months ago but it was closed, and I check back another time... Still closed)

See, when it was reopened the cache owner never enabled it again. But the cache is still being held there by the librarians.

They said they have been trying to e-mail the cache owner, and he has completely ignored them. The cache owner does not geocache actively, and has only found two within the past two years, and not one in this country! He has not even logged in this year!

My biggest fear is another cache will be published within .1 miles of the library. Than it could not be unarchived or relisted.

Usually in this case, I would relist it, or even reuse the container. The issue? The container is not reuseable, for obvious reasons. And relisting it would get rid of all the history, it would get rid of placed date in 2002. It would ignore the 500+ finds. The 69 favorites.

It'd lose so much, that made it so great.

Nobody has really been doing anything, but this cache is a classic. I don't want it to go.

What should I do? E-mail the CO again?

  6. My small town has 1 cache, and people come too it about once every month, Im hoping to increase that number by making several caches, my family and I own a lot of farmland so placement isn't an issue but I want unique caches to draw the crowd. I am thinking of making them all themed caches like Batman, Green Arrow, Dr Who. What do you all think? What else should I do to bring people in?

Okay, theres two majority group geocachers that you can bring in. The number runners, and the people who love epic caches.

Since you have farmland, it's doubtful you'd attract any number runners, especially with the already low saturation.

Considering you have lots of land, you could make some creative traditional caches, or one long multi around your entire farmland (The traditionals will probably bring more people than one cache).

One thing you could do, if you really wanted to get creative. How about a mystery? Like, you could make up an entire plot line. Maybe a theft that has to investigated, maybe a missing person you have to find. You could even have props in each one.

Not a multi, but each one could be a traditional.

  7. So I'm watching the worst movie in the world, from the 70's, because I knew it was filmed locally. A Wes Craven film called "Last House On The Left". At 6 or so minutes in, they are filming on the rock that my Catherdral In The Pines cache overlooks. After that, they are driving down Route 53, near my My Old Stomping Grounds cache. This movie is REALLY bad (it was in the free movies in the On Demand movie list), but then I felt like I had to watch the rest to see how many other caches I can spot. But it's so stupid! Worst movie, supposed to be based on a true story.

Does it matter how bad? Movie filmed locally are always fun to watch! It must've been... Really, bad, to not enjoy a local film.

  8. Nevermind, (I think) the issue was more about being a terrorist target rather than a trespassing spot.

As it cited a local bomb squad removing the cache.

The pre-written note is very confusing, I think I will have to clarify with the reviewer.

With the usual caveat about precedents, different rules for different locations, etc. I have seen caches beneath the 'L' in Chicago.

Yes, I don't know if the reviewer is unaware about the existence of a train system above the ground. His first thought was that it was in a building... It really makes me wonder... Though, I still doubt this, as he apparently lives in the area as I have met him at a couple events...

I don't know whats wrong with the cache...

  10. What does REI carry?

Is it actually GC.com branded gear or is it equipment for Geocaching?

REI carries stuff that is officially from Shop Geocaching as well as a world of other outdoor supplies of course.

As far as how much inventory they carry, it depends on how large that REI store happens to be. At the one near me (the Seattle flagship), their display looks something like this, below. This was taken at the end of President's Day weekend after a big sale which might explain the light volume. You get an idea of product availability, at least.

Wow, the REI i visited in King Of Prussia Mall, had like, one item. The geomate Jr. That was the entire stock of geocaching items...

  11. With that in mind, I sincerely ask that you think about these questions I have (i.e. don't feel you need to respond):

    1) Why do you think this is a good idea?

    2) What is the "point" of this cache series? To highlight a nice part of NJ or to provide people an opportunity to run up numbers?

    a) If the latter, there are much better places including a number of rail-trails and state forests that don't involve real safety and property concerns

    3) Is this purely self-promotion?

    4) Who is your target cacher?

    5) Are you prepared for the social blowback that you likely might face from the locals who have not been shy in voicing their opposition?

    6) Your video reveals some rather derrogatory views of NJ. Is this just an expression of those feelings?

If you find New Jersey is so boring, I'm sure your attitude may be adjusted if you attended one of the regular events in either Central, Northern, or Southern NJ or checked out the local GO groups websites/facebook pages you will find plenty of interesting and notable caches to do. I can think of a number of caches created by the locals above, as well as several regions, e.g. Watchung reservation and Wharton with some interesting and exciting caching opportunities.

    7) What do you think (assuming you care) about the potential risk to the reputation of geocaching in the communities along this highway should an incident occur while someone pursues this series?

    1. I never thought it was a good idea? I didn't think it was a bad one either.

    2. To run up numbers, I think NJ has plenty of caches made for showing off it's beuty.

    3. Yes.

    4. The number runners.

    5. Yes.

    6. The video is actually a joke.

I advise you to watch this video (skip to 2:02 mark) After you watch it, it will become painfully obvious that I was referencing that video, and playing along with an established joke, rather than just spew hate on NJ for no reason.

    7. Of course I care, the reputation would probably be pretty crappy.

Before you guys break out the tin foil hats, I actually *love*, ask anyone, I always thought it was the second best state. (I believe California is the best). And out of all the states I have visited (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Virginia.) It is the best state. In fact, I have spent nearly 20,000 hours in the state... That is *just* time spent in NJ while I had rented a hotel for a couple days to a week. That is not counting all the time I spent doing various other activities, such as camping, visiting the Aquarium in Camden, wishing I could gamble in Atlantic City, geocaching (obviously), and even just spending time with my family. Yes, I have family in NJ, not surprising, considering I live about 3 MILES from the border. Well, less than a mile if my car could fly over the river. :P

Actually, one third (exactly!) of all my events I have visited have been in New Jersey. I think that's pretty reasonable for doing events in New Jersey. Two of them in Central Jersey, one of them was in South Jersey. I plan on going to a North Jersey event soon. Though my opinion of North Jersey is not nearly as high as South and Central Jersey. Maybe West-North Jersey is good, with it's beautiful forests, but i'm not a huge fan of poor urban area's, especially when there is the largest city in america less than a couple miles away. <_<

I also plan on finding a cache in all the counties in NJ, and plan on doing it one county at a time, taking in the best each county has to offer. Why short myself when no county is farther than 120 miles?

Yes, I'm not planning on going through with this now. No, I don't hate New jersey.

  12. 11:12 UTC. Better hurry, that's 3:12 a.m. in Pacific time.

(Obligatory edit : yeah, I think it is nonsense, but it is fun to play along. The time I gave is for winter solstice)

I think it is all nonsense too. After all, most of us, don't freak out at the end of each year when our calendars end. We just buy a new calendar. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any Mayans around to make a new Mayan calendar.

So, applying "logic" to this. I'd bet that Mayans would use their locally observed time zone and not UTC. It would be awkward to say the least if they based their calendar off of a time zone that they themselves didn't live in.

    Chrysalides was joking.

And people are worried because they didn't end the time at the end of their calendar. They ended it at a seemingly arbitrary spot... Of course, it is more likely that they simply ran out of time to make a calendar any longer. Logic says, they can't build a calendar for every conceivable date in the universe, especially after they all died...

  13. For over 8 years the FAQ that explained the "rules" of geocaching didn't even mention online logs. Then Groundspeak decided they needed to be update so they added "Log your experience at www.geocaching.com."

He was never arguing that people should log their DNF's. He was just more curious as to why they don't.

Oh, and just because puritans quote that set of guidelines and call them "rules" doesn't make it true.

  14. There is no benefit to doing so. Lets say the cache was found yesterday, and it's a devious cache, it's obvious it is there. Logging my DNF would waste time.

Now lets say, it hasn't been found in months. I will log it.

Lets say it was found last week, but it is an LPC, than I log my DNF.

When I am the 4th person to DNF in a row. I log a Needs Maintenance.

When someone else logged a needs maintence over a week ago, and the CO isn't doing anything, I log a NA.

Logging DNF's for the sake of logging them is useless.

  15. I certainly hope you can demonstrate to your reviewer that you are capable of maintaining those caches. You have made more than a few posts in here complaining of lack of adequate transportation to support your caching hobby.

I can support them, I can check up on them once every two weeks if absolutely necessary. I think the community will do a good job replacing the film cans though. Worst comes to worst, I can take NJ transit can drop me off at the cache I need to replace.

I take public transportation to more than 75% of my caches as of late.
