  1. JoeFrog posted a link to the pdf file in which I describe my misadventures making it. I did some research, and have a few ideas on how to make them better. Eventually I will come out with a step by step guide on how to make basic coins, instead of the basic 'how I did it' guide linked above.
  2. To me, winter accessable is any cache that you can still find easily even though there is a foot or more of snow on the ground. Just my opinion. Lynx
  3. Doh! it figures... Sent them to you via email, JoeFrog, I really appreciate it! Thanx! Lynx
  4. I posted a while ago about making your own sig/geo coin/bug, using plaster for a mold and solder for the coin material. Someone asked me to provide pictures. I'll post one picture of the finished product, and a link to a PDF explaining what I had to do to make this thing. So here's the 'pretty much finished' coin. EDIT: Removed gian broken picture Yes, I know its ugly. But I made it, and to me thats what counts. Heres a link to the PDF file with more pictures and details of my mishaps making it. (actually I made 2) EDIT: Removed useless link You'll need adobe acrobat to read it. Constructive criticism is welcome. (BTW - the coin dimesions is 2.5 in point to point, and weighs 5 oz, its pretty heavy) Need to make the next ones smaller.
  5. I have a MeriGold, and I don't think I can turn WAAS off on mine (well not without access the secret menus). I usually get a WAAS lock within 10 minutes of turning my unit on. With it a WAAS on, the gps usually shows me with in 3 - 8 feet. On the rare occasion that I didn't get a lock, its usually 20-30 feet. But the days I don't get a WAAS lock, the weather is poor, and I don't get very good satellite locks either.
  6. If its the Meridian Gold, hold the power button down to activate low level light, then hold it down again to increase the light level, hold it down one more time to deactivate the light. Lynx
  7. I use old an old army issue AR-15/M16 magazine pouch, My Merigold fits nicely. They attach by ALICE clips and are rugged. They are also dirt cheap. A lot of times you can pick them up 12 for $10.
  8. I have two geo-monkeys My daughter Ashlyn is twelve, and my son Torin is 10. To tell the truth, they are to one who end up find most of the caches. I'll get them as close to the spot as I can and tell them to have at it, and usually they find it within 10 minutes.
  9. I have an electronic skull that activates when moved, and its fairly sensitive. It came on a plastic staff my wife got for me for halloween, and is removeable. When activated, its move moves, the eyes light up, and it screams at you and then kinda wierd chant. Best part of all is that it will fit into an ammo can.
  10. The GPX definition is at http://www.topografix.com/gpx.asp . As an aside, contrary to the common use in this crowd, GPX "proper" doesn't have any geocaching-specific elements. That's done by the Groundspeak extended namespace in GPX. Thats for the link and the info! I appreciate it, Lynx
  11. My friend had a Pleco that grew to that size. It was 1 1/2" when he bought it, and he put it into his brackish water aquarium, and it grew to be a 15" monster. Did you find it on land? Was it alive? Lynx
  12. The ones I used to see were in Western NY (Buffalo and south towns area) But I wouldn't worry about them crossing the lake to your area. I'm with you, I don't like 'em, I don't go out of my way to kill 'em, but I seriously don't like 'em. But they are great for pest control.
  13. Can anyone provide a link to the GPX format? I hung up my programming hat 1 1/2 years ago, but it looks like I have a reason to break out my compilers once more. Thanx, Lynx
  14. It looks exactly like what we always called a wolf spider where I came from (Western NY). Quick check around the net reveals a number of different spiders called a wolf spider including the type pictured above. My guess is that, like local names for herbs and flowers, spiders may also have local names. The fishing spiders of my area, were smaller, very hairy, and all black. They also would only be found near streams, creek and ponds.
  15. Spectacular picture! I'm envious of the experience. Lynx
  16. I'm having problems accessing the main site, it either bottoms out or takes forever to load. Maybe they are doing work on the servers or there's a problem on the net backbone.
  17. I've had my Concord Eye-Q for alittle over a year now, and I think it takes great pictures. I took this pic with it: Best of all, it only cost me $100 US Lynx
  18. Concord Eye-Q 3042 AF. Will be upgrading in several months. Lynx
  19. Very nice. Is it waterproof? Where did you buy it? Thanks. Got mine at wal-mart, cost me $20 (ok actually I got it for christmas, and it cost my wife $20) Its not water proof, but is water resistant (been in enough storms with it) And is very comfortable. Quite modifiable if your handy with a needle and thread. Mine's real-tree camo (I have the most eclectic camo collection of clothes and gear), I don't know if it comes in any other color. You wouldn't be disappointed in it, not at that price anyways Lynx EDIT: Doh! I forgot to say that the company that makes my pack is called FieldLine. I don't know the model. Here the Url I took the pic from, seems like the guy had the same experience I did getting it. No I did write it. http://www.bowhuntingnorthamerica.com/Ever...chen%20Sink.htm
  20. Ok, I just gotta know -- what kind of spider is this??? We sure don't have these things around in the Ozarks. Where did you find this thing? Jim Wolf Spider Yeah definitely a wolf spider. They can grow to about 6 inches, they are incredibly fast and don't build true webs. They hunt by stalking, and are as scary as hell (in my opinion) You'll find them by streams, woodpiles, rockpiles, cellars, etc. God that is ugly spider! *shiver* Lynx
  21. Its unfortunate, but true, that terrorist are using GPSr's to coordinate attacks. A number have been found following the sweep of Falluja, with waypoints for both 'friendly' (to them) areas and 'foe' (US Forces and Joint Operational) areas.
  22. Really its just a collection of information the Author found around the net. You can find most of this stuff on yahoo. For example, search for 'merdian faq 2.0', and you'll come up with several links to site/pdf that tell you how to access Magellan Meridian series 'secret key codes' and the like. Don't waste your money, just do a little homework. Lynx PS: alot of the codes could potentially screw up your unit badly, so don't use them unless you know what your doing.
  23. One thing that occured to me is that if you are determine to place one in a cache, run the blade along a sharpening stone to dull it to the sharpness of a butter knife. Then when next person picks it up, he/she can take it home and sharpen it if they want to keep it.
