You said that 0 is not a sock and I know for a fact that this cacher finds but doesn't log, for whatever reason. I think the idea is lame. What's lame is that he doesn't log his finds and prove that he qualifies for his own challenges. What is there to hide? The rest of us have to do it... Why does someone have to prove that they qualify? Does it make it any more or less of a challenge for you? Or are you just sore that you don't qualify? And I ask this with complete friendliness and respect. It's not because I don't qualify. It's that I never put out a challenge that I don't qualify for myself. This person has zero finds and therefore can't prove that he qualifies for anything. It should be the same across the board for everyone. I published a challenge once that I forgot to post my qualifications for (oversight on my part, not intentional) and Gat R Done told me that he needed to see that I qualified for my own challenge. It's not that difficult. If 0DC isn't going to log his finds, that is his prerogative, but it's lame to expect everyone else to have to.

Yes, it's called the Geocaching Newsletter, which is emailed out every week and announces special details like upcoming souvenirs.

went out last week for a big series and it lasted six hours and that is absolute max im sure with screen backlight on 15 secs and sleep 30 secs and brightness low as poss so still the are few things like the geocache widget not changing just stays on the nearest one to you and as said before a geocache count Your posts are very hard to read. You should become friends with Mr Punctuation.

I'm not so hopeful as I asked for Inter-model data sharing over six months ago and since we haven't seen that capability on any Garmin device, I rather doubt it's doable. I hope I'm wrong. Are we talking about the same thing? I'm talking about the Share Wirelessly feature that is on almost all Garmin units that lets you send caches and waypoints between Garmin units.

Have you tried a hard reset? If not, I would try there first, then report back. Thankfully, I didn't need to resort to that. I went caching all day yesterday and part of today. After properly calibrating the compass, it has kept me on track. Now, if I could get more than 3 hours of battery life out of it, I'd be ecstatic. I go caching every day (my streak is well over 900 days) and on weekends I typically go caching all day. My Montana would last at least 8 hours of solid caching, sometimes more, sometimes less. I'm lucky to get 3 hours out of my Monterra. That's horrible. My Garmin 60S and 60csx lasted about 6 hours which I thought was annoying, but three hours. I guess, buying a backup batter is a must. Would you ever go back to the Montana? I still have my Montana and I also have multiple sets of AA batteries, so swapping them in mid-caching day isn't THAT big of a deal. The Monterra is a perfectly capable GPSr now that the compass is fixed, but it is still missing some key features, like the ability to wirelessly send and receive caches between other Garmin units. I am hopeful that they will fix that in a future update.

I've had my Monterra for about two weeks now, right after the 1.18 update came out. It has been working pretty well, especially since the compass was resolved. However, in the last two days, I can't get it to point "up" on the map when I'm navigating to a cache except when I'm driving. If I'm walking, the compass is pointed either 90 degrees left or right or even worse, today it was pointed 180 degrees so basically the map was backwards - as I'm walking towards the cache. I have the latest 1.19 update so I'm not sure what the heck is going on with this thing. I tried calibrating the compass while I was in the field but that was an effort in futility. I just calibrated it now so I'll see how it performs tomorrow...

Routing isn't that difficult. I don't care how far off the road the cache is. I don't care how far up the trail the cache is. I want it to get me as close as possible and then I can take it from there. All of the limitations you guys have listed also apply to any GPS, including my Garmin Montana (which does do routing). Heck, even my Garmin Nuvi will route to any given coordinates if I tell it to. If Google Maps or Apple Maps can route to a destination, why can't the official GC app or Geosphere do it?

Based on your rationale for using Geosphere in the first quote, I thought that you were thinking that you can only PQ from the area you are in. No worries, and you're right, the official app can use PQ's but Geosphere offers MANY more features that I have gotten used to over the past few years since it came out. The official app has gotten better, too. Heck, when I first started geocaching in 2010, that's all I had. I didn't buy a dedicated GPSr until late 2011.

Yes, I do know that, but it doesn't work as smoothly as it does with Geosphere, which has its own database(s). I use my GPSr, with caches pushed onto it from GSAK, as my main finding tool. As I find caches out in the field, I mark them as Found in Geosphere, which allows me to reference it again once I get home and am logging my caches. Plus, it's way easier to type any field notes on my iPhone than it is on my Montana. When I'm driving around caching, my iPhone is docked in my car on the center console, so I have a constant view of any upcoming caches onscreen as I'm driving. The maps on my Montana are good, but not nearly as good as the maps on my iPhone. If I could add one feature to both the official app and Geosphere, it would be routing. The best you get is a straight line to GZ. But, my Montana has routing so it's not the end of the world.

If you don't use your GPS constantly, how would it know where you are at any given point in time? We are not discussing the INTRO app here. That's a different thread. It's more than obvious that JesandTodd are using the full app and would like to see these features added to it. In that case, I'd be happy if it wouldn't crash when navigating to a cache more than a mile away. If you have a Bug Report there are other parts of the forum to report this. If you have the time, perhaps you might want to tell us what online tools you use to find geocaches, and why. With respect to the the actual moderators and the OP, I'll now remove my Junior moderator cap. The title asks for tools that we are the most comfortable with. - Official GC app. I use it in a pinch, but it tends to crash sometimes. I use it only when I don't have my GPSr with me, which is extremely rare since I go caching every day. I also use it to post a FTF note on newly published caches so other finders know that it has been found. - Geosphere for iPhone. It allows me to load my PQ's so I am not constantly querying the area than I am in. It has many more benefits over the official app than I can list here. - GSAK. It is indispensable for many, many reasons.

Is this the default message on the GC Intro app? I keep seeing it in the logs verbatim. I assume so. I see it a lot on caches in this area these days. Yes, it certainly appears so: linky The best part is that the newbie never actually found it.

There used to be one in my area. It started out as a traditional cache, then at some point the CO changed it so you needed to "sign" the text file that was on an SD memory card. Quite a few people found it but never questioned it. It finally got archived once a reviewer found out about it.

I have been to, and placed, quite a few tribute caches. There are two ways to do this: 1. Publish the cache, FTF is open to whoever finds it first. Usually there is a note on the cache page stating that FTF is open to anyone. 2. Get a group of fellow cachers together near GZ with the honoree to celebrate the milestone together. The honoree is already there with all of his/her friends. We call it WNC (WeekNight Caching). FTF honors go to the honoree and, if he/she chooses, the rest of the group. This prevents others from rushing out to beat the honoree to FTF. Cache is scheduled to be published at the time of the meeting.

I live in MN and have never heard of Muggle B. In the Twin Cities area, there is a cacher called emmanogoldfish who logs his finds, "No GPS No Motor, No Map, No Notes.". He has two accounts, one he uses a GPS with, and one that he uses strictly geosense.
