  1. As I have read what you all have written me so far I could make a three minute speech easy with all that you have shared. I thank you for the replies and even a very well detailed e-mail I received on the subject. Even the people that will put up a fight for clarity's sake, your information is valued if not just to give me a laugh. Sorry for that, only kidding of course. I have grand appreciation to all and hope to receive more insight. Thanks!
  2. Yes, you've got a good grasp, but their are two categories: Subculture or counter culture (that I have been taught). If you aren't in one than you're in the other. I give this hobby the title of a subculture because it is exactly as you first defined. I also call it a subculture, because it is definitely not a counterculture, cause as you so boldly underlined: "present themselves in opposition to the mainstream trends of the culture.", which is the definition of counter culture, not subculture. Subculture is not limited to only those examples you listed (and some of the ones you listed could be considered counter cultures such as stoners and cults, because they go against the norms of society as a whole.) A subculture could be a high school softball team, because they have their own set of values, langauge, symbols, and norms. I don't mean to insult, I only mean to follow the definitions given to me, so please understand, it is just a general title.
  3. In one cache I found there was what looked to be a wooden coin with someone's name and e-mail information on it. I wasn't sure if it was a coin or not, but I read somewhere that if you don't know the procedure of geo coins or have no intention of bringing it to another cache, then just leave it alone. So did I find a coin or did someone just have a wooden pog that they place in geocaches to see how far they get spread?
  4. Hello all! I was wondering if people who are part of the community could give me some insight into the culture of Geocaching. I have this assignment in my sociology class where I am supposed interview a subculture. He remarked that we should interview a subculture we knew nothing about so we could broaden our knowledge with their new input. I completely agree, which is why I am asking a subculture that I, myself, would love to know more about since I am just a novice. Now I'll ask you if some of community could give me their two cents in the matter and tell me about the four pieces of criteria my teacher would like that a culture is comprised of: ---Symbols: Representations of your cultural beliefs. (I saw a few frogs around, so maybe someone could tell me what that is all about.) ---Language: A system of symbols that allows people to communicate with people. (I am interest and perplexed by the complexity of language I have seen so far.) ---Values- Standards by which a culture believes in. (From what I have seen this is a honorable community with a lot of fair values.) ---Norms: Rules and expectations by which a society guides the behavior of its members. (I have heard a few custom rules for this craft and I am sure their are many more. I need explanations of these four bits of criteria in this subculure of geocaching. I would like that no one just posts links to the lexicon or the rules of the game, but instead give your own words and thoughts as to what you think the geocaching culture is. This will take more time to do, but maybe my appreciation for the interview will satiate you enough to lend me your time. Also, I can't stress enough that I don't want any arguments as to how this assignment was dictated or any qualms that people have with sociology as a whole. That will sour the thread and I just would love for this to be a great education for my self and the class that I will give a speech to. So if you could please offer your insight your kindness is awesome.
  5. Ha! That name really reached out and touched my funny bone. That has to be the most witty and fun name I've heard of so far.
  6. The Chesty Whores! If you haven't strayed away from this post just by that introduction then you might have fun in this forum. Yup, the chesty whores, that is my team's name. By team I mean my two friends or more that I go geocaching with. My friend originally wanted to call us the "Treasure whores", but I didn't like it. So wanting to appease him and make a pun I suggested our current name for the pun it has. Let me make this clear! I'm a dude, guy, rover, gent, man, in the best word, Male! Even still, we though it would be funny and even though I did two, I still had issues with the name our first day out. I kept on having spastic moments where I would burst out with "No one is going to get it!" and "It doesn't make sense!" Eventually I cooled off and just decided that the name in its crude entirety means that we would do just about anything to get a cache. So, it stuck, or for now, until one of the other people gets too embarrassed by the name to change it. All well, I will still always be a chesty whore. So what about everyone else? Do you have a team? How did you decide on your team name? I'd be happy and interested to find out. Also, I hope I didn't offend anyone or go against any rules. I am just telling the truth! P.S:Our team also developed a slogan to go with out name that I like to share with people on the trail: "Good hunting, Great booty!"
  7. Hello, my name is Jeff and I am just starting geocaching. I have never found a better hobby then hunting for hidden objects. I guess it goes with my adventurous nature and that the hat I wear leads everyone to call me Indiana Jones. I think what I like most about this hobby is its honesty and caring community that plays this amazing game. So, though I may seem like I'm buttering up people to answer my questions to be, I am just expressing a deep thanks for giving me a hobby that is everything I want and more. Muchas Gracias! I must now lead to my other goal in this topic and that is to get some answers to this trusting, caring, and baffling community! Lol.I have some questions like the lingo everyone uses. I see DNF, TFTC, SL, TB, TNLN, TFTCSL, TNLNSL, and etc. I didn't name all of them I'm sure, but I was wondering if someone could tell me what these abbreviations mean or direct me to somewhere I can figure it out myself. Next, I'm not sure what a benchmark is, but it seems to be valuable? Any answer to that? I have been loving all the seek the hidden I am playing, but I would love to play hide and let you seek. Unfortunately I haven't a GPS, so I don't know how I can hide anything without a device that can come up with the latitude and longitute of my hiding spot. Is it possible to hide something without a GPS? I end the questions and this post now hoping for insight, answers, and friends. Thanks for reading! "Good hunting, Great Booty"
