  1. I doubt that the maps are "built in". You can prolly delete them and install anything you want.
  2. A quick glance at the GC cache maps has 11, maybe 12 caches along that loop. One is currently disabled. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/gmnearest.a...;lng=-74.279433 Click the topo option to follow Brian's map easier. About how long of a hike is that?
  3. If I buy the 300 and Topo 2008, will the display show the shaded relief? If so yogazoo's arguement to me is a no brainer. For most people, loading only their stomping grounds should speed up the startup time. Is it confirmed that the slow startup times ARE because of the maps being loaded, or is this only speculation? Also, I've created some of my own maps from 30m DEM files. Will THEY show shaded relief?
  4. There is a "text" folder on the screenshot shown in this thread. Maybe an owner's manual is stashed there.
  5. I read somewhere (I don't remember where) that 4GB was the max. Can't say how true this is....
  6. I don't recall reading about any GPX files used except for the ones sent from GC.com. Has anyone tested a GPX file exported from GSAK? Do you get more logs? Does it make sense to have multiple GPX files by cache type, found, owned, etc.?
  7. Yes, but with the GPX file support, that's almost a moot point. If you're that into caching, you'll likely be a premium member and will be using GSAK to manage your GPX files. True, we don't yet know for sure how many caches it will hold, but it's probably more a function of memory than of some artificial limit. For "normal" usage of waypoints (to mark something of interest to you, one point at a time), 1000 is a lot. That depends on where you live. 1,000 unfound waypoints fill a radius of under 20 miles from my home. Not enough for me! I'd really like 10,000. That would get me the whole state of NJ, all of Long Island and NYC, plus some upstate NY and the closest 500 caches in Pennsylvania and leave me with ~2000 open waypoints. This would be ideal for me. But with the new way that the Colorado handles geocaches, I'd be able to accomplish this easily. Right?
  8. The little hors d'oeuvres fork is a pretty sweet deal on that knife tool. I think Snat should have one for the can o' clams he's always packing with him. michelle From his description, he might just have this one.
  9. My Leatherman Flair is always with me. I can't believe it was like $20 at Costco! The only time I may leave it behind is when I have my little Leatherman Squirt P4 in my pack: I picked up this baby, the ToolLogic Firesteel Knife, a few months back after seeing a review in a magazine: and I've had this cool blade, the Buck Revolution-XT, for a few years:
  10. Wikipedia. The answer is always there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographic_information_system
  11. I don't think that's true. I dump my PQs into GSAK and from there into my PDA and I get the last 10 and that's because I set GSAK to only send the last 10.
  12. Any word on the maximum sized memory card that can be used?
  13. So, aside from the ability to load sat images, which is of little use to me, what features would make me spend the extra bucks on the 400t over the 60CSx?
  14. I think he's a skier. I'm sure he does cross-country too. We'll tie a rope around him to tow him up the steep parts.
  15. Have you tried using GSAK to upload the caches to your GPSr? You should be able to make it work for you.
  16. Wow! Maybe you'll get to do the AT next year after all! Good luck with the MRI.
  17. Just put a post here and I'm sure it will be attended to. It's the least we could do. I know it'll be tough, but take the time to let it heal. I hear a couple of Long Trail Double Bags or Victory Storm Kings will help deaden the pain. Get well soon.
  18. Brian, There were no postings down there that we saw. I do remember what looked like a posting that had been torn down on a tree in front of the furnaces though. Why is it off limits? Is it due to it being dangerous or to keep it from being vandalised?
  19. I just started "On the Beaten Path" today. So far I like the guy's writing style. It should be good seeing as he was a book editor at one time. I just finished "A Walk for Sunshine" yesterday. It's a quick read and can recommend it. I give it 3½/5 stars. I highly recommend "AWOL on the Appalachian Trail" It's the best I've read.
  20. The First Need Deluxe Direct Connect weighs the same and is a purifier. Any comparisons or comments? I'm in the market for one. http://www.generalecology.com/portablesystem.htm#1
  21. The Maze is the only cache up there I haven't found. I DNF'd it. And, I have a spot up there (I believe it was on the Blue Trail) that I want to place a cache at. I'm hoping to join the hike.
