  1. Both urban and rural caches have their merits. A lot of times it is me and my kiddo, so we go and pass the time with some urban caches. When we are out camping and fishing, then forest caches are really fun. Seeing that I am expecting I imagine urban caching will have to do when I get farther along. I like that there is something for everyone and every situation.
  2. I don't really care. Frankly, I am kinda shocked that it matters that much to people.
  3. Welcome! Not in the Philadelphia area, so I can't help you with cache recommends, but don't give up! I think finding your first cache is tough, at least it was for me. Here are some things that I found helpful to get going: * You started in the forums, perfect! Go visit the Cool cache container thread in Geocaching topics forum. * Read the logs on the cache. They may give some good spoilers. * Pay attention to the size in the description. If you go perusing Groundspeak stores and look for what fits that description, you may get an idea of what to watch for * If you can, go caching with someone that has a few under their belt. Hope this gives you some kind of a start! Good luck, this game is really fun!
  4. Srsly??? Would this be here if he could manage this?
  5. And so what about the cache outside the store? As long as you do not have to patronize the store to get the cache (which is against guidelines) who cares? We have one around here that is beside a military surplus store and is a cool hide. I didn't have to walk into the store, but hey, I had no idea it was there. Passed that info onto my hubby. He never knew about it either and was happy for the info. While business cards and adverts are lame, it doesn't promote hate and is not harmful. Why the angst? Just move onto the next cache.
  6. If you dug any sort of hole, it is against guidelines. However, knock yourself out, in the end, your reviwer will decide.
  7. I started caching in the winter as long as it isn't ridiculously cold and windy. So far, I don't mind any season.
  8. I believe that he did call and that is the answer he got. He has reiterated it several times. Heck, he is even double checking. However, brsik is not a troll. Get real. Just because it is a strong opposing position, a troll you are not. Honestly, if they are open and you are digging in them to find a cache or you see a wire and touch that, then I say those actions display a lack of common sense. I don't know we have a ton of them in my caching area and they don't faze anyone. I can't say that I am fazed about them either. Besides, doesn't the avatar say it all?
  9. I was actually thinking of making some stamp art swag for some caches. I wish I saw more caches that had handmade pieces.
  10. As far as your thoughts, geocaching is policed by its members. Although cache owners are responsible for their caches, I don't believe it is wrong to help maintain a cache. As far as garbage being placed in a cache, why let it continue to sit there? If you have the means to make it a little cleaner, what is the issue? I like that play and Canadian money are grouped together in one unit. That is all. Now, now, just because it is colorful does not mean it is worthless!
  11. Great story! Congratulations and we wish you well.
  12. I googled. Interesting. http://www.king5.com/news/local/Geocachers...s-95281104.html and another article http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20100531/...&news01ad=1
  13. There are over 500 caches in the Central Alberta area, so we usually just pick a radius and do them. Or if we go camping we load up the caches in the area. We don't have any special formula.
  14. Fantastic and devious. Maybe that serves for a perfect opportunity to cross paths with the elusive forest defender.
  15. A trip that I have wanted to do for a long time. Backpacking through Europe.
  16. Welcome to the RV Life. I have been living full-time in a motorhome for the last 7 years. I've always wondered how long it will be before some enterprising geocacher finds me. Of course I am a moving target but it should be a challenging find for someone with skills. Dave... So does the RV have a travel bug? Great hobby. Thanks for bringing it to the masses.
  17. On top of Sulphur Mountain in Banff National Park A view of Lake Louise in Banff Searching.........in the wrong flippin' spot.
  18. I agree it is important to be respectful of surroundings, but this guy is really taking it to a point that I believe is ridiculous. This guy is an eco-tool.
  19. This game is supposed to be fun, bring people together and not something that should get soooo nitpicky and drama-filled that the fun gets snatched away. For us, we have one family account. Sometimes, I get a cache alone. Sometimes, it is the whole family. Sometimes, it is just me and hubby. Sometimes, it is me and my son. Essentially, we are one unit. When one makes the find, we all make the find. If we started a bazillion accounts for who logged what with who, it would be one heck of a fun-sucker. It's about family time and doing something fun. And so what? Say a seven year old has his own account and goes caching with the family. Say Mom makes the official find. I wouldn't dare tell little timmy he can't log the find because he didn't make the actual grab. I won't begrudge that because its nit-picky and just downright jerky. Besides, if causing a family squabble over a family orientated game, by being so rigid that it supercedes the fun, I think you should be giving your head a shake.
  20. I've heard about this before and read an article about it. Urban exploration. It's kinda intrigued me. In Weyburn, SK there was a mental hospital that was historically significant and was abandoned. I believe it has been torn now lately, but I know of people that would go in and explore. I always wanted to see it but the opportunity never presented itself. Weburn, SK mental hospital
  21. We just started earlier this year and Bean's goal is to meet some more geocachers in the area by attending an event.
  22. Thanks for the responses and keep 'em coming! Yup, I know about Cold Cache. I got that sucker loaded on the GPS and I know where it is. That one really intrigues me. Question about that one though, how hard is it to get to? Passing it on the highway, it looks like you have a bit of steep rock climbing to do? ETA: I also knew about Bankhead in Banff National Park. Team herb and Beans did a bunch of caching on the way there on our last adult-only trip, but figured we may save it for the next trip when we bring Little Herb. We figured he'd get a lot out of that.....and we had other things to do like just doing adult stuff. Thanks for the other Alberta caches. It sounds like it is a great quadding spot too, which is awesome. we are looking for some great spots to quad and cache. I think that's a great combination!
  23. One of the things that I absolutely enjoy is exploring places that have been abandoned (yet considerably safe). Whether it be an old country farmhouse ruins or urban decay, it fascinates me. In Alberta, I know of a few caches that have been placed in abandoned places, but would like to note a few more, notably in Saskatchewan and Alberta but everyone is welcome to participate! Would you mind showing me some of these particular caches? I'll start. Want to visit here sometime when we go camping in Nordegg, Alberta. GC10VAD Geo-Ghost Town
