Compass use while caching? (Had to try the poll thingy :) )
Jeremy replied to mcb's topic in GPS technology and devices

Open the back of your GPS unit and take out the batteries. Chuck them as far as you can. Get home. For Geocaching: Once you get close, position your gps so the north on your unit matches with the north on your compass. The GPS direction arrow will point to the most likely direction to the cache. If you have an electronic compass as part of your unit, you don't need one (except for backup). Jeremy -

Ipaq -> GPS (eTrex basic) Problem..
Jeremy replied to joshgray's topic in GPS technology and devices

Yes. The two sites are on two separate machines independent of each other. I could merge them closer so once you log into the Geocaching.com site you are logged in here, but that would mean if this site went down (and as a beta site it happens a bunch) then you wouldn't be able to use geocaching.com. So there is a mild inconvenience to have to login. My suggestion is to login first before perusing the forums. Jeremy -

Fortunately we're keeping the old forums for archival purposes. Makaio... didn't know you were from VA? I grew up in Stafford, VA and lived most of my young adult life in Northern VA (Herndon). Small world. Both PNW transplants. Jeremy

What does that mean, and what is the remedy? Weird. That usually means thet the user hasn't added a release date for their bug. What cache is this for? Ultimately, it won't affect your ability to grab it and log it elsewhere. It's just an arbitrary date so you can know how long its been "on the run." Jeremy

quote:Originally posted by Ranz: This is just a thought. Would it be a good idea to put a date mark on the cache page that indicates when the owner was last on the page? Interesting idea. Would this be a voluntary button to click or should I automatically change the date if the owner has logged in and visits his/her cache? Jeremy

Ipaq -> GPS (eTrex basic) Problem..
Jeremy replied to joshgray's topic in GPS technology and devices
This is just a stab in the dark, but do you have one of those foldout keyboards that you clip into when you're travelling? My thought is by default the connector thinks it is your keyboard typing the coordinates, since both NMEA and typing would result in the same sort of output. All NMEA is a string and carriage return, anyway. Jeremy -
I'll work on a search by keyword function for travel bugs. It's on my todo list

I'll make it more obvious tonight. Jeremy

They are all pretty good. The more digits to the right of the decimal point the more precise it is. There was several good posts (like this one) in the past about precision verses accuracy. Jeremy

If you change your display name on your "my cache page" (change account details), it will show up in the forums. Jeremy

Yet Another Poll - Favorite Hiding Container
Jeremy replied to VentureForth's topic in General geocaching topics
Ammo cans are in such a large supply that they become the easiest (and arguably best) cache container. They are watertight, heavy (so they don't float away), and just the right size. I agree, however, that there is a right place and a wrong place to hide an ammo container. Make sure to spraypaint it to cover all the military text, and put your contact information and/or the web site on the side so folks know what it is or who to contact when they spot it. In addition, refrain from hiding them by transportation centers, like railways, bridges, etc. But all caches should stay clear of those areas anyway. The only negative side is they can stink sometimes, but a quick bath in some bleach-water and it is good as new. Jeremy -
Yes. Normally folks add a note when they log the cache for a second time. This way it doesn't add to the overall find count. With a note you can still add a travel bug, just like if you were to place a travel bug in your own cache. Jeremy

Do you remeber the first item you took from a cache?
Jeremy replied to Team Tecmage's topic in General geocaching topics
Strangely enough, nothing. Why? It was a yellow 3x5 card box, with a Sunny Delight drink, camera and logbook in it. That cache hasn't actually ever been logged since I visited it either. Jeremy -

I got on just a 1/2 hour ago and there were no avatars being displayed to begin with, so I'm still in the dark on how they even look or where they appear. They appear under the username. If you click on a user's name it will take you to their profile, where you can see the avatar photo. At least until I can bring back the new style sheets. Jeremy

Check this one out. Amazing! This was a huge accomplishment for one of the most remote caches out there. Jeremy

1) Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P5 3.3 Megapixel 2) N/A 3) Adobe Photoshop 4) 600 pixels wide, JPG (high resolution, small file size). Save as web image. Usually they save around 60-70k Jeremy
