  1. Since there is ' viability' to this option... How about a beta trial?
  2. Had read this thread a while back and then came across this on my way to pick up GCGA9E today. It appars that the driver tried to backup in the dark. Everyone appears to have gotten out OK.
  3. I have not run into them on the trail, but ran into one visiting our area at church but only after they logged a cache that I was watching. Small world. Then saw a GEO sticker on a truck and being on a role, emailed the only cacher that I knew of, the guy who has placed the majority of caches around me and sure enough. Not quite on topic but shows it is a small world!
  4. Similar, Team_T&P. We decided since TP is the biggest commodity when camping, we would use that order for our Initials!
  5. The brandname keyspan is about the most compatible out there. I have a couple different manufactuerers for testing at work, and have proven this out via testing. I have nothing that my Keyspan adapters do not work properly with...My laptop is an IBM and I have no comm port either, but I use the keyspan USB to single comm port and the keyspan usb to 4 comm port adapters with no problems with my Garmin and Palm units.
  6. Garmin EMAP (Primary) and a Palm IIIxe+streetfinder(Navman) as the backup
  7. Also depends on the GPS and software involved. My Garmin is spot on, software I wrote that polls the garmin and computes speed based on 3d vectors is spot. My Palm running Pathaway3 is way off. Approx, 10-15%. The overall accuracy of the navman is similar to my Garmin, so I can only speculate that it is the software.

Works well if I use the same computer all of the time. When at work, possible. When at school, not possible. When at home, possible. When at my fathers, not possible. When at my In-laws, not possible. also leaves me with the dilemma to remember the coordinates to search from or the closes cache to search from. In every case the center of the zip code is 10+ miles from the location I am starting. This makes rapidly traking down caches more difficult. Plus, I do not get the convience of the 'home' map from other locations. It is just a wish to add to the list. Not a neccesity. I have simply stated a desire. I already have workarounds...namely my Palm. But still makes logging caches harder than it could be. But heck I am new at this, just an 'outsider' observation. Best regards
  9. I am not sure if this is the same, but I have Earthlink as a internet service provider. From my master account login, I can set things for the other accounts such as parental controls, user names, reset passwords etc. Each person can login under there own username as password, but I can see there visited sites etc. I would imagine something like this would be how the family arrangement might work, but I do believe that this is a major site redesign, and as such, would wait for a major website upgrade. I do not know of a forum to do this, but from a forum perspective, the accounts need no tbe linked. The ability to disassociate your self may or may not be trival, but if building this capabilty from scratch, then it would be something to factor in.

I think it would be great if we can setup 'our cache page' to be able to save a number of different homebase places, not just the home. I work 65 miles from my house. It would be nice to be able to see on the map very quickly what is near work the same as near home. I also go to the same spots in Al. and Fl. very often and would like to be able to do the same. All of these zip codes are not close to the center, so I like to use the lat long to these places to center on where I am, not a mystical point 10 miles away. My $.02 again
  11. Ok, so I am new but heck I have a big mouth. $3 is nothing. Just add a one time option to pay for one month via paypal without the renewel. Free heck. This stuff is mostly free. I joined primarly to get at a few caches that were premium listed only. The GPX capability saves me the extra step of using EASYGPS to load to my garmin, but then again, if I download a number of Caches, I only get them in loc format, so no big help there. My $.02
  12. My NavMAN snaps onto my PDA making one big honking unit. It will not work with my T2 or T4 but then again, if I drop it and break it, I will not cry. Besides, it is money already spent.
  13. Similar question. Apologies to the thread owner if I got their hopes up. BUT I have a navman GPS receiver for my Palm IIIxe. It has been in the attic because I hated the streets application that came with it. What I would like to know is if anyone has had any luck in finding an application that is more suitable for GeoCaching that runs on the Palm that can control the Navman GPS?

  15. I am currently using an Garmin Emap. I have used this unit professionally with an external ant. Through my experience, the MCX connector is very fragile. I am thinking about cutting the antenna wire and leaving the MCX connector in the back of the unit semi-permanently. I will attach an SMA connector (for small size and ruggedness) to both ends where I cut it to attach and dettach the ant. Is there a ant. switch on the EMAP that would degrade the performance of the unit? I am assuming when the external ant is connected, the unit will use both, if possible. Any comments or suggestions please.
  16. My wife laughed at me on my way out last time. Since my last escapade looking for Helendorff ( GCGA9E),, read the log, I went from carrying a print out of the cache page and my GPS to carrying a fanny pack with 2 snaplinks to clip on the tethers for my GPS, gloves and small digital camera. The fanny pack also contains a med kit, FRS radios, a watch (because I do not wear one), mirror, cylime stick, whistle, pen, swiss army knife, pencil, compass, and any acquired travel bugs. On my belt is my BuckMaster 184 knife, cell phone (WAP enabled w/bookmark for Geocaching) and of course the printouts for the caches. Lastly, I have my camel back. Once my premium membership goes through, I will add my Palm pilot to the mix. My external ant. will be here in a couple of days and the next time I go to my parents, I will pick up my hiking vest and then will not be dangling from my belt. Picture to follow soon. BTW my backup GPS attaches to my palm. It sux but works in a pinch.
  17. OK, I am new to the sport, but my bag for GeoCaching is growing exponentially to the number of caches I find. I have some old military equipment at my folks house that I am going to pick up on my next trip there that should help. After that I will post a picture of my 'new' rig. I am just curiuos what you people carry and, if possible, post a pic. Cache ya in the wild,
  18. I have a Garmin Emap, but was thinking of upgrading to a Garmin 76s more likely due to cost or a Garmin 76CS. The main reasons are: More memory, Built in electronic compass, built in auto-navigation, waterproof, longer battery life. Are these reasons sufficient to warrent the outlay of cash?
  19. With the Garmin Emap, it will lose lock sitting on the seat or anywhere without a clear view, front windshield works best. I realize that I am new to this sport but I have used GPSs in my job professionally. I agree that they are expensive if you purchase a OEM model, but as posted, you can get for $25 and what great thing to free up both hands and keep the GPS in a pouch or pocket when climbing or stabilizing or just because without losing GPS lock. I have not decided where I will put mine. I thought of buying a Fiberglass flag staff for a bike and cutting it down. But before I try elevating it, I may try a velcro patch on the shoulder of my hiking vest and see how it works.
  20. Works great with my Panasonic X700 on Tmobile USA.
