  1. Thanks guys, I think the easiest for the finder would be simply to include a small note within the ziplock packet expaling the item has been activated, but not placed. The finder can keep the item or start moving it about.
  2. OK, so for example if I use 25 of these codes for my signature item at the Geobash, I could assign the group the name "ASP GeoBash 2013" and if I decide to make a group of 25 for the next years event, I could name it "ASP GeoBash 2014"?
  3. This sounds like a great idea! This way I can watch the coin at my leisure. I looked at the adoption links, and if I'm not mistaken, it would require input from the person "adopting" the coin. I think this would be more of a hassle than a pleasure for someone who just wants to pick it up and simply move it and track it, or put it into their collection. Now from what I understand, I'll have to give my block of codes a name..is this correct? Can I just name it something like "Signature items by Articus66"? or can I name each code individually?
  4. I never thought of receiving all the email. That would be fun for about 1 week. OK, how would I gift these so the emails go to others? How does "adopting them away" work? Thanks..I'm glad I asked!
  5. OK, so I'm going to be designing and creating a limited set of signature coins for the ASPGB VII mega event on May 19. I will be buying 50 codes, and creating about 20 coins. I will etch the first 20 codes into the coins, and place them in caches during the event for people to pick up and keep, put into a collection, whatever. My question is this. I'd like to be able to watch where the coins go. So, I'm guessing I'll activate the codes first, then place the coin with a message into a little ziplock packet. The message will say that the signature coin is a gift, and it's already been activated so feel free to move it about. Or, would it be better to leave them unactivated for the finder to designate the mission. If I leave it up to the finder to designate the mission, do I provide the activation code to Groundspeak when I purchase my block of codes? I'm guessing I would simply supply the activation code in the message I will put into the ziplock packet with the coin correct? I'm guessing though I won't be able to see where it goes though if I do this.. Which is better? I want to create other signature items to place in caches for others, and would like to use the codes however is best. Thanks!
  6. Excellent! Thanks everyone for the help. I did see the garbage icon, I was unsure exactly what it deleted. Bushwalker53 confirmed that it does completely erase the find off my count as well...which is what I had hoped. Cheers!
  7. Hi everyone, I just made a mistake in logging a find. I decided to log it online rather than uploading it from my GPS. I "found" the wrong cache and would like to erase that find and claim my find on the correct one. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks
  8. I'm in the same situation, but I would like the GPS feature to use with astronomy based apps. Can anyone recommend a tablet that will connect to the Oregon without any special adapters other than maybe a male to male USB cable?
  9. OK so PQs are the answer it seems for a quick and easy solution..thanks all.
  10. Hi Walts Hunting, Thanks for the quick reply..OK so I've been trying to search around and learn a bit more about this issue since I posted, but you posted more quickly than I was able to find more info outside the forum here so.. I've never used GSAK before. If I become a premium member, will I still need to use GSAK or can I simply download 10 Pocket Queries of 500 caches apiece? I've also read on another forum, one Oregon owner had success in renaming many of his unused .GPX files to .GP, which the unit then ignored and he simply renamed them in groups. Another possible method I have yet to test might be to simply create a set of folders, maybe corresponding to geographic areas, dump the GPX files into them and maybe they won't be seen? Just curious as to what else might work.. Thank You
  11. I'm experiencing the 200 file limit on my oregon 300. I use a flash storage card. Can someone explain how I can use GSAK to work around this? I'm guessing GSAK simply swaps out GPX files in batches of 200 or less?
  12. Thanks for the quick replies guys! I'm embarrassed to say that money for me is really tight, so I do not have a premium membership so I'll be forced to find a free solution for my free tablet I have the coby kyros mid7012 it does have a USB 2.0 port. I "splurged" and recently bought a cable to connect the tablet to my Oregon, which of course I then discovered wouldn't be a simple as sending the caches to the device like I do on my PC. Anyway to do this with a regular membership?
  13. I recently received a cheepo Android tablet (Coby) and was wondering if there were any ways to download caches on to it (same as how I do with my browser and the Garmin Communicator plugin). I'm going to an event that will have free wi-fi and would like to hook up my Garmin Oregon to my tablet and download caches right to the device. In looking around elsewhere I didn't have to much luck, but I was hoping maybe one of the more technology savvy out there came up with a solution?
  14. I have a nice Canon 20D camera but I find that in some of the places I go geocaching, hauling it around is somewhat of a chore. I really like taking pictures of my trip, so I want something that if it falls and shatters, I won't have a heart attack. I have given myself a challenge, find the best used (or new) digital camera for $50 maximum. Is it possible? What do you carry on your geocaching trips? What is a good brand to look for used?
  15. That would be very cool. I think that would work -- from the web site, save a GPX file, then copy it to the Garmin via the USB port. One advantage of a tablet (even without GPS) is you can have many more cache files loaded (PQs, etc.) than the Garmin can manage. Then send them to the Garmin as needed. Thanks..I'm gonna get the tablet. If it works for caching, great, if not then I have somewhere interesting to set my drinks this summer.
  16. I have no problem buying apps, just wanted to hear from other who may have used this tablet before and offer any advice on how useful it is. There is a geobash coming in May and they are going to offer wi-fi access when they release all the cache locations. If I could use this to capture the locations, then attach my Oregon 500 and send them over to it that would be great. Something tells me that may be asking to much.
  17. It uses Android 2.3 OS, plus it uses GetJar for apps. Could I simply download the app and put it on the tablet? I guess all of this is pointless though if the POS doesn't have a GPS.
  18. I have a choice between the Coby Kyros Tablet (MID7012) as a service recognition gift from my employer or a digital camera. The reviews on both aren't very good, but I have a choice between this and a Nikon CoolPix camera of similar quality. Can the Groundspeak android app run on the tablet? anyone have one of these things and use the app? I realize neither of these gifts are of the same quality as those costing hundreds more, but if I'm receiving either for free, I won't complain. Just hoping this cool little app would run on that tablet.
  19. I'm trying to find a well-built backpack to be used primarily for geocaching and short hikes. In distilling down the few basic requirements for the geopack I've come to the following conclusions: 1. I want fast access to whatever I'm trying to get at. I don't want to keep taking my pack on/off to get at the stuff I will be accessing most when caching (pens, multi-tool, swag). The pack should either swing out onto my chest where I can access it from the front or I should be able to purchase pouches that can attach to the front straps and I can carry the absolute bare essentials within hands reach. 2. I'm getting tired of carrying a water bottle. I want one hand for my GPSr, the other free. 3. I don't require a massive pack. I want something for caching and short (less than 5 mile) hikes, not overnight camping on the trail so capabilities I don't need are an over-abundance of exterior attach points for bedding, big storage compartments, massive water reservoir, etc. I've come down to two physically small (but not ultra-small like their remora pack) maxpedition products, both are hydration capable (100oz. reservoir). The Sitka Gearslinger, and the Falcon 2 Backpack (the falcon 2 is the smallest backpack with hydration capability). I've done a fair share of research on both, reading product reviews online and watching product review videos and have come down to a few conclusions based on my requirements First, The Sitka is a single-shoulder sling pack and the Falcon 2 is a typical double-strap backpack. Weight distribution is better with the dual-strap, but seeing as my intention is to pack semi-light anyhow, I don't believe this will be an issue. I have owned both types and have enjoyed wearing a double-strap for long hikes, but not when I have to constantly access the contents. On the downside, I've been in situations (climbing or walking on very uneven terrain) where the single shoulder strap feels awkward. But, the Sitka has a waist strap which I didn't have on my other pack, and this might be useful in these types of situations. Second, right out of the box, I would need to add a pouch or two to the Falcon 2 front straps in order for it to meet my front accessible requirements. If you own either of these, please share your thoughts..
  20. Thank you all for your input so far! Keep posting and I'll keep a running tally. FWIW, just purchased a Leatherman Wave and can't wait to come across a few microcaches that have gotten gummed up cause of the elements..and the majority seems to have an affinity for the classics, so I'll also be shopping for a Victornox Swiss Army Knife. Here's the total so far, up to and including post #37.. Leatherman Original xxxxxxx Blast x wave xxxxxxx mini-leatherman xx fuse xxx squirt p4 x micra xxxxxx kick xx Charge Ti xx Juice KF4 x Juice SC2 x style cs x Flair x MUT x crunch x surge x
  21. OK well I guess I can't edit my post more than once so here's the total up to and including post 28 Leatherman Original xxxxx Blast x wave xxxxx mini-leatherman xx fuse xxx squirt p4 x micra xxxxxx kick xx Charge Ti xx Juice KF4 x Juice SC2 x style cs x Flair x MUT x crunch x
  22. That's a good question. I was looking for the same thing when I decided on the Fuse for the scissors and pliers. You can supplement by carrying the Micra as well for the tweezers, but it would be nice to have all three together. After looking around at what's available in other brands, I'm thinking of just buying a Leatherman wave, and getting a decent set of tweezers at walmart to keep in my pack.
  23. I would really like something with a tweezers (those damp logs in a bulletsized microcache had me wishing for something like that a few times this summer) and a pliers. I like the micra but the scissors aren't very useful to me.
