  1. Thanks for that interesting explanation dprovan.
  2. Thank you to geo K and HHL for your helpful comments. HHL, I had to smile when I recognized your profile pic; haven't seen those two since reading Mad magazine years ago, and they were usually plotting against each other .
  3. I see this option is available in Lists. I have actually edited a cache name (to add a detail to it) but the edit doesn't come through when downloading. So what good is this feature if it only works online? Another option would be to print the list after I've edited it but I see no way to print lists. Thanks!
  4. Oh ok, I've never seen the word "Status" used in the Garmin so didn't know what you were referring to. Strange, tonight I turned it on and was amazed to see old caches back in the cache list; yesterday I had connected to the computer and manually deleted all gpx files per your request, so I don't know how these caches showed up again; downloaded in the background? Also, was able to use the command to Remove Live Data and it worked, which it wasn't doing earlier. But now it's telling me No Geocache Lists detected when I try to download. When the process was working, the list download and sync only took a few seconds, then I'd back out, choose sync again, give it a minute to download the cache details until it reached 100%, then it said it was synced, which I guess was the status. Never saw anything other than that. At this point I think I'll just live with it; I can still download easily while connected to the computer and I know the Bluetooth download through my smartphone works too. What I'd like to try is to go to another WiFi network and try syncing there. That will narrow the problem down to either my Oregon of my WiFi. Thanks for all your help!
  5. Sure, here you go. I have never seen any list status that says it's been downloaded or otherwise. The status is all about privacy, whether it's public, private, or shareable.
  6. Do any geocache GPX files exist in this directory? (If uncertain, rename the GPX folder to 'GPX BKP' and reboot and retest the Oregon 7x0. Just connected Garmin to computer and deleted all cache files; none showing on Garmin now. ALL PQ's and Lists show the number of geocaches and a status, even those never downloaded. What is the number of geocaches for the list in question, and what is the status? I maintain just one list and there are 12 caches in it; status is "Private".
  7. OK, gonna take this in steps now... C. How do you know no live data was removed? Because old caches are still listed under the Selection tab. C2. Can you be certain no other GGZ or GPX files existed on the Oregon 7x0 or microSD card that included these geocaches? Have you removed all GPX/GGZ files and retested to see if they are still displayed? Just plugged the Oregon into my computer, no other files exist anywhere else but in the GPX folder. G. Did you return to the GCLive List page to view the downloads as they occurred, right up until they were complete? When it was working, yes, because it shows % progress in downloading cache details. G2. What status was displayed for the list in question before and after? Never downloaded, so no status. H. How did you confirm the list was not downloaded/synced? None of the new caches I put on my list were downloaded. H2. Are the caches in the downloaded list closer than 100 miles from your current location? Oh yes, probably less than 75 miles. J. Did you try any other Wi-Fi Networks for testing? Yes, I actually have 2, but same results with both. J2. Were the Wi-Fi networks configured entirely on the Oregon 7x0, or did you use Garmin Express to add them to the device? Yes, set them both up on the Garmin. I just tried a procedure that I sometimes use in the field and it worked; tap the Geocaching icon, then choose the map tab, then tap the refresh icon on the map and it loads caches in that area, using phone's data and Bluetooth. I'm thinking the Oregon's wifi receiver is messed up somehow; sometimes it sees my list online and sometimes not, but even when it does it fails to actually download and sync, with no messages about it.
  8. Hi Atlas Cached, Thank you for your interest in my issue. I'll try to answer your questions in order. A. What is the firmware version of your Oregon 7x0? Software Version is 5.30, Display SW Version 85.08 B. What method did you follow to remove live data? Setup Geocaching--Geocaching Live--Remove Live Date C. How do you know no live data was removed? Because old caches are still listed under the Selection tab. D. Was any other data removed? Not that I've noticed. E. What method did you follow to download/sync the list? Make sure wifi is turned on (usually is), then Geocaching, Setup Geocaching, Geocaching Live, Geocaching Lists, then I select the list and choose Sync; **sometimes it sees my list and other times it says "No Geocache lists detected." F. How many lists? Just 1 G. Did you return to the GCLive List page to view the downloads as they occurred, right up until they were complete? When it was working, yes, because it shows % progress in downloading cache details. H. How did you confirm the list was not downloaded/synced? None of the new caches I put on my list were downloaded. I. How do you know the Wi-Fi is connected? I have a wifi "item" on one of my gps screens and it says I'm connected to my home network. I also go to my router location to make sure I have a strong signal. J. Did you try any other Wi-Fi Networks for testing? Yes, I actually have 2, but same results with both. K. Did you try a Bluetooth Connection? Bluetooth always on for gps and phone, same results. L. What weather info could you not get? What exactly was missing? Tapping the weather item brings up 2 tabs, a weather report and radar. Sometimes I'm able to see the radar but otherwise message says "Data request failed. Check connection, and try again." For the weather report, message says "Waiting for Data". M. What 'total reset' did you perform? Give exact details to reproduce, please. Went to Setup--Reset--Reset All Settings [to factory defaults]. N. Need more information before I can even begin to try and reproduce your issues. O. Apples and Oranges. Has your Oregon ever had successful Wi-Fi data transfer with the current WI-Fi network and equipment? Yes, for the past couple of years been working fine.P. If yes above, please provide details. (what data transferred, how it was transferred, how you verified transfer was correct, etc.) I downloaded caches from my online list using procedure described above (wireless), waited until all details were downloaded, then verified the new caches and details were on my gps under the 2nd geocaching tab.
  9. This week as I prepared to go out, discovered I couldn't Remove Live Data...didn't remove any. Then I found out it wasn't downloading and syncing an existing list. Online chat with a Garmin rep and he said no other reported issues like this. He said to check my wifi and unit says its connected, but noticed a can't get weather info, which I don't use anyway (radar part seemed to be working tho). Finally did a total reset but didn't change anything. Anyone else having this problem? The Oregon should be getting a wifi signal because my phone and computer are both getting the signal right now. Thanks for any help, this has always been a great resource.
  10. Thanks Mineral2 and Atlas Cached for your help. -I turned on the filter for Found Caches which made them show on the map. -For tracking, I did have the Auto Pause and Auto Start options turned off because they didn't seem to work properly in the past, so I turned on Auto Start to see if that helps. Its possible the Oregon lost reception at one point and never restarted. -As far as downloading goes, I now see that you have to go back in to Geocache Lists and the syncing progress is actually displayed in %; takes about a minute to fully sync which I wasn't aware of. Now a Happy Camper Cacher again!
  11. I'm experiencing three issues lately that are very annoying. I use Geocaching Live to download caches from my Geocaching.com list. It goes quickly and after the download this message appears, "Basic geocache details downloaded. Descriptions, hints, and logs will now be downloaded in the background." Does this background download happen right away? Once out in the field I find I can't access that info, so I've been checking a couple of downloaded caches before leaving; they had all the info but I couldn't access it later in the field. Anyone else have these problems? The second issue: why do found caches simply disappear from the map? Didn't they used to turn into treasure chests? Finally, the track manager suddenly stopped tracking my route recently for no known reason. I know you have to start it up again after changing batteries, but that didn't happen in this case and satellite reception was good at the time too. Seems like if reception was lost it would continue tracking once it regained reception but it was like the tracking was just paused and never restarted. Thanks for any help on these issues!
  12. Wow, I now have a better understanding of why this wouldn't work on a large scale; the definition of a "town" with distinct boundaries is not universal, so would be impossible to implement on the Geocaching.com website. Thanks to all who responded; I found it very interesting how each region in the country delineates where we live. I checked out openstreetmap.org site and they have a great variety of maps available but only show "administrative boundaries" at the state level. I did make one valuable discovery though. on4bam mentioned that typing in a town in the search box on Google Maps would show the boundaries, which it does, and I wasn't aware of that. Also, you can type in coordinates (geocaches!) and, besides putting a marker on the map, will list the street address, including the town, below the search box. Another option is to use Google Earth by checking the City Boundaries layer under US Government. Google Earth also accepts coordinate searches and you can even import gpx files.
  13. I'm surprised, after all these years, that geocaching.com does not require the name of the town or city when a new geocache is published. After all, this is a location-based activity, and only listing the state leaves a lot to be desired. I have been wondering how many of CT's 169 political units I have cached in and how many I haven't. Since the map on geocaching.com doesn't show political boundaries, its sometimes difficult to say with any certainty exactly what town you are in. The cache description may mention a town, but often does not. Does anybody know of a way to show caches, found or not, on a map showing town boundaries?
  14. Thanks Atlas, it worked! I thought I had done everything correctly before, but your instructions undoubtedly included something I hadn't done. Now I'll know in the future...not If but When, lol. Jim
  15. Is anyone else having this issue? Have tried various solutions to re-pair phone (Galaxy S10e) and receiver but nothing works. Appears the phone is ready and gps says its "Ready to Pair", but nothing happens after that. The phone is ok since its paired with my car. This is preventing me from wirelessly downloading cache lists of course. Any suggestions would be appreciated and thanks! Jim
  16. Add my name to this complaint, been 2 weeks now and really slows down my cache planning. Contrary to what was suggested earlier, adding just a few caches or only one cache (without using Select All button) does not work either.
  17. Thank you Atlas Cached for clearing up that mystery. Alas, progress sometimes means giving up good features you depended on.
  18. I miss the old days when the caches were actually part of your track file, so when you uploaded one file to your computer you saw everything. Anyway, trying to upload completed caches to the latest BaseCamp. Did the import thing and got the tracks but no caches. Looked through all the folders in the gps and didn't find any, although I had loaded around 25 earlier, using the Geocaching Live feature, which works pretty well. Would also be nice if I could load them into my Topofusion program too, but have to find the files first. Appreciate any suggestions from other Oregon 700 owners. Thanks for your time! GOJim
  19. Just happened to me today, on my Oregon 700. Turned on WiFi and the screen dimmed (crash) then had to power on again. Connecting it my computer and deleting the current.gpx file did the trick. No reset required either!
  20. Thanks to Red 90, Mineral2, and Atlas Cached for your valuable input on this topic. I've got some work to do following everything up.
  21. I have a new Oregon 700 but wondering about the accuracy of the tracks I record. Recently went on a short hike with the gps tracking turned on. I also used a phone app (A-GPS Tracker) to log my hike also, just out of curiosity. Comparing them both 15" into the hike, I noticed the phone app was lagging behind the gps in distance covered. After the hike, the gps had recorded 2.18 miles, while the phone app reported only 1.80 miles. That's a rather large difference for a short hike, almost 0.4 mile. When I uploaded the GPS file to mapping software Topofusion, for some reason the distance changed to 1.87 miles, but when that file is viewed on Garmin's Basecamp, its back to 2.18 miles. The phone app mileage remained unchanged when opened in both programs. So my questions are, why is there a difference between two gps units, which measurement is the correct, or most accurate one, and what's going on with the mapping program? BTW, phone is an LG K8V running Android. Any clarification I can get on this issue would be welcome.
  22. Thank you Dyver and John for your input. I have tried zooming in, but the only thing I get are hill labels and then, eventually, street labels, with no town names. I have also increased detail to Most, which adds a lot of "clutter" but no town names. Its interesting to note that after I've selected a cache and press GoTo, the map immediately is populated with town and city labels. Its almost as if they're being suppressed while in caching mode. As far as searching for a city goes, the only search available within the Geocaching activity is by GC code. I can search for and find a city on the "regular map" outside of the geocaching activity but lose that when I go to the geocaching map, which has the button to download local caches through wi-fi. I'd be interested in hearing from other Oregon 700 owners to see how they work around this obvious glitch.
  23. New owner of this unit. I've noticed when viewing the map from the geocaching activity town and city labels aren't shown, but they're visible on the map outside of the geocaching activity. This makes it really difficult to locate an area you want to load caches in using Geocaching Live. I just talked to a Garmin support rep and it behaves the same on his GPS also, so he said it must have been designed that way to make more room to show the geocaches icons. Is everyone else's Oregon 700 like this? And, how do you locate an area you want to cache in before selecting the refresh icon if you don't have any town or city labels on your map?
  24. Good point, Dj Storm. I've heard smart phones eat up battery power, so I'm not giving up my Garmin. GOJim
