  1. Did you place them all in one week? No, but I did place 11 in one week. I don't think the goal of caching should be the swag. Who carries around $15.00 items to "Trade Up or Trade Even" for a battery charger. If you put one of these in a cache, someone will trade it for a golf ball or a broken McToy, or maybe one of those wonderful, cheap carabiners . . . The important thing should be the placement of the cache. Put it where there is a nice view and no one will worry about the value of the swag. OK, I agree that it's not only about swag either. But I'm just responding to the OP and the given topic. The topic was about swag. Specifically, what swag to put in a geocache equipment cache. He didn't say he's placing 59 of them. He did say he's limiting himself to $1.00 - $1.50/item. I'm merely suggesting that a bigger budget would make for better geocaching equipment to put in his cache, at least for a FTF prize if nothing else. Notebooks are useful, yes. But not all that exciting. If it wasn't for my little girl I wouldn't trade anything.....I like the hunt....but since I take my little girl out we have toy trades for her to use. Most of the hides I have done I stocked with pretty good things.....such as mini flashlights.....leatherman tool and lighted key chains.....all are gone now and have been replaced with McDonald toys or five and dime trinkets.....people like the good stuff, but they don't seem to be leaveing something more or equal to value. Kinda got me mad at first when I noticed this happening but I soon got over it. I just think of it as my cache when I place it and after that it becomes everyones cache......They can put in/ take out what they please, I'm just the maintance guy after placement..........That's how I look at it anyway.
  2. I get the same looks about geocaching as I do about racing go-karts....they look at me funny but then I get the " oh yeah I do that all the time with the kids when we have some free time and 5 bucks " but then the looks get back to a crazy look when I tell them I race at 100 MPH not 25 - 30........lol
  3. There is one around here called "Lincoln's First Trial" that a local telecom guy signed.....it was located by one of those telephone service junction boxes. Thought it was neat he took the time to sign and put it back, when he could have just thrown it away.
  4. I'll second that Rocky......PETA is wanting Kentucky to remove a bust of Col. Sanders from a state building....That will save some chickens!!! I'm all for being good to the earth and all of that but not using a 5 inch piece of PVC isn't going to off set the guy down the road building a house.
  5. I'm really upset that everyone doesn't like strawberry....there goes the perfect Geo community.....
  6. I'm in Ky and can't attend the event......but what I wanna know is why everyone overlooks strawberry.......and none of that Neo stuff either I'm talking a full box of strawberry.
  7. I think one reason people like these forums is to vent......and I think the original poster vented....I know I vented on mine but it wasn't like it was building up and I had to say something or bust......lol I could care less about the contest.....my daughter and I enjoyed the "extra" thing to hunt and find. She thought we was famous for having a picture on the web.....lol. That's really why I do any of this......for her enjoyment. But explaining to her why people hold on to them for a few months is hard to explain. We use travel bugs to teach her where the states are and differant things about the state a bug we once had is located.....kinda hard when it's not moving. No big deal we took the Jeeps off my watch list and only watch the regular tb now.......
  8. On my FTF that me and my daughter had found. We had searched for 45 min or more before we found it, we took a nice mini flashlight with all kinds of attachments for pinpointing the light, including a 90 degree hole light attachment. It was a thrill to be the first to find it as it had a white Jeep in it also. And we left more than we took...just to make sure that cache stayed well stocked.
  9. I feel both ways on this.....one I like the micros because of the challange....but kinda hate them because that's all there seems to be going up. I started this as a way to spend some time with my little girl. She doesn't like the micros because there isn't any "neat things" to find. I like the micros because I use them to go out alone. Yes there are newer people out there putting them up any where and every where just to say they've hidden __?___ many.....ego I guess. but a parking lot of a barber shop has no real intrest to me. It's everyones game and the sad thing is as excited as we are about it and would like evryone enjoy it like we do, when more people get invold and put what they think in it's going to change. Nascar racing is what I think of as far as change.....I started going to the races in 1971 after the race at the Nashville track they use to open the pit gates and you could walk down in the pits, see the drivers, look in the cars and walk the track. Now with the way it has grown you can't do that......more people just means more change. Good? Bad? Just do the things you like to do within the game and hope everyone else is having as much fun as you.
  10. Maybe he hasn't taken the time to read the rules? go to this link and check out this cache that he took down because it was on private land. The log by Airraidfan is really funny, but I'm sure it was a tense moment for him at the time. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...ff-973ae5e7e115 I'm not chasing the Jeeps anymore either there is none close by or you drive an hour to the cache and someone has taken it and not logged it as a find (which is really odd since you have to log it to enter the contest and get credit for finding it). It disappoints my daughter to much to get there and not find what's supposed to be there. It'd be differant if it was found just before we got there and they didn't have time to log it yet, but I've been watching two I made long trips for and they are still listed in the cache.
  11. When the Jeep contest started this year I told my 7 year old daughter about it and she liked the added thrill in looking/and finding one. We took the pictures as per contest rules....everything is fine, we're having fun. Now no Jeeps are located within an hours drive....which I understand will happen, no big deal. The Jeeps that are located around this area are a good distance away, and we have made special trips to go look for them but there are several that haven't been logged and we have made "wasted" trips for no reason. ( Sure we found the cache had a great time, but for a kid it's hard to understand why it wasn't there and why it says it's there a month after we have been there) The Jeep deal works as for advertising for Jeep.....my daughter now points out a Jeep going down the road, but I won't be hunting them anymore, I think people get to carried away about the contest and forget why we play this game in the first place. Maybe only showing the pick ups and not where they are dropped and make it a total surprisewhen you do find it would add to it. There is no real fix for the hoarding that is going on....so I'm getting back to the real reason we geocache.....getting out, seeing things we normally wouldn't see. and spending time with my daughter.
