  1. NO, that is absolutely ludicrous. I can't believe you came in here and even tried to insinuate that position! I put you into the group now with cache container signers, LPC lovers, and microspew® hiders. GOOD DAY sir!
  2. Gizmodo catches on. Seems like someone has read my recent rants concerning Garmin and their over 50 'current' GPSr models. I can't imagine being a new cacher and trying to figure out which handheld to get. No wonder so many folks are popping up with the "which one should I buy/is best" question. Be nice, help the new folks out. Oh, and the garmin rant started about here, right around post #103. and no, Garmin isn't the only one who this issue relates to.
  3. A lot of long leaf grasses can iritate the skin. Just walking through a field, or even patch, of this can leave you with a reminder to wear long pants while out caching in the wild. I have come across this several times, even when I was a kid in Northern Missouri. You get a nice burn, with no visible signs at first. Then you can see welts, or stripes of red where the irritation is taking place. I'm not sure if this is a chemical reaction, or an irritation caused by the serated edges of the grass. An I don't think it's stinging nettles. If you walk into one of those you know it, like NOW! plus, the nettles look pretty frightening anyway, with those sickly purple flowers and ten bazillion thorns...
  4. Two options I've used in the past - hey, sometimes you just forget... 1) I used a twig and a dandelion leaf to sign the log. Worked ok, but looked kind of sloppy. 2) Burned the end of a stick, then used the charcoal to sign the log. Worked better than 1), but then I am a shunned smoker, and NEVER forget my lighter.
  5. I'm sorry, but I'm glad to be a Garmin snob once again. Triton is going to have to be much much much better than the 500LE to even make me think about purchasing it. And there is the whole problem I have with this new line. Sketchy photos (I think they are artist renditions and not actual units), limited information with plenty of promises, and customer service that should not be called 'service' but "welcome to hell, we'll be with you shortly". I love my platinum and my eX600. I am one of the lucky few that has never had to call for help or support. Both units still work anad I can still find the caches. Unfortunately, I see myself moving to Garmin in the future. Magellan just can't turn this ship around with one new product line, if their 'service' and support areas are still miserable. Oh, sure, they will suck in a few misinformed sheep with all of their flashy bells and promised glory, but then the threads will start again about how the unit is broken, the call center is unresponsive, and updates to the software/firmware take 1-2 years to arrive. Oh, and when was the last time your maps were updated, hmmm??? thought so. waiting for the next best thing from Garmin.
  6. so no news is ahh... no news. of course their web site is 'oh so helpful' Coming soon!!!1! but only lame pictures, and absolutely no details - just a bunch of propoganda. I wish I was a manager at Magellan, then some freaking heads would roll...
  7. Most weeks it's just one, the closest 190 caches near home. When I travel though, I usually have three to four others to help me hunt in the new location.
  8. I travel from mid-MO to mid-KY about once every six weeks. I created a PQ along the I-64 route months ago, but last week, I couldn't get it to work. It knew what the route was, but when I ran the PQ I kept getting back 0 caches, even out to 5 miles. I eventually kyped someone elses route that was similar and ran with that.
  9. STOP NOW!!!1! thanks, I'm gonna have nightmares and the itchies all freakin' night!
  10. Or you could just use the geocache manager that comes FREE with your magellan. It works just fine. I use it every week... And, yes, I do use GSAK also, and have for over 2 years. Be careful of steering folks to an app when a perfectly good free one comes with their GPSR. GSAK can overwhelm the uninitiated very quickly.
  11. or, you could just click my name and see what I have found in my travels... stop wasting my bandwidth!
  12. So that would mean this hasn't been discussed yet, so what is your opinion on the topic at hand? I think the comment was not needed at all. Part of the reason some of these discussions go haywire is because of sarcastic comments like that. It is a shame that the second post had to be one. How about actually contributing to the discussion. I think Super_Nate has a right to make his point and ask opinions without being sniped at right out of the gate. So, instead of bringing an off topic thread back on topic, we come over here and started a new one? That was my point. So do you jump down evryone's throat when they post a rolling eyes smiley to the latest "how do I change my username" thread or garmin vs. magellan rant? Super_Nate has a right to make a point, and so do I. It's called an opinion as well as freedom of speech! My opinion is that the forums have recently devolved into numerous threads decrying the quality of (insert cache type here) caches. It has become a little stale, and IMHO pointless. We each have our own tastes, likes, dislikes, and styles of caching. Some sign the container, while I choose to sign the log. Some cache from a chair, while I hike through the woods enjoying nature and the simplicity of a game centered around hide and seek. Some hate micros, while I like them, or lamp-post caches, while I still enjoy them. Bottom line, we will never all agree. Guess instead of checking out the threads first thing in the morning, while on travel, I will just come here at night and make comments after others have taken their full swing. Time to take my ball and go home.
  13. My standard 'procedure' for loading my eXplorist. HTH 1] do a pocket query 2] PQ sent to my e-mail account 3] With the e-mail showing on a reduced window, I simply double-click on the attached PQ, and a program called WinZip opens the zipped file, and shows me whats inside the file. 4] I click on and drag the main gpx file to my desktop. 5] I rename the numbered gpx file to something that makes sense to me, like Home.gpx, or route.gpx, or Lexington.gpx 6] I open GSAK and drop the .gpx file in there to update my database, and to send the caches to my palm for paperless caching. 7] I attach my eXplorist to the computer and turn it on, I make sure it is in data transfer mode, then go into the geocache folders on the SD card and delete the old .gs (eXplorist geocaching) files and any .fnd (found) files in there. 8] Open geocache manager program 9] hit the new file icon (white sheet of paper) to clear out any old cache data. 10] hit the open file icon (folder, next to the new file icon). 11] move the search to my desktop (where I saved the .gpx files) and double click on the .gpx I want to load. 12] Hit the save to eXplorist button (looks like a satellite) and since I renamed it Home.gpx, it will save it to the eXplorist SD card as Home.gs. 13]repeat 9-12 until all of my .gpx files are laoded. Oh, and I limit all of my .gpx Pocket queries to a maximum of 190 caches.
  14. Welcome to the newest expansion of the lame cache thread...
  15. true, they do have good units - I own a eX600 and a meriplat that I use constantly. You just have to enter the purchase with the full knowledge that: 1. they update their firmware RARELY - i.e. My eXplorist was updated once, since it was released over 2 years ago. 2. Hope nothing goes wrong with your unit. The customer service ranges mostly around atrocious to non-existant. 3. don't except regular updates to the software (maps, windows apps, drivers (no Vista or Mac support)) 4. magellan likes wonky (proprietary) hardware that requires you buy only magellan accessories, and they tend to change with each new model, to force you to buy all new accessories. 5. while most of their software works, it's kind of like Korean knockoff merchandise - somehow its 'just not quite right' that's enough for now.
  16. Don't listen to the cretins here, it's your game, play it as you feel comfortable with. I own two caches that I also logged as found. of course I adopted them after I found/rescued them. sometimes, you just know what is right.
  17. I like! Of course, I just dump them all on my 500GB NAS drive.
  18. Shelob "She served none but herself, drinking the blood of Elves and Men, bloated and grown fat with endless brooding on her feasts, weaving webs of shadow; for all living things were her food, and her vomit darkness." Very beautiful poetry and imagery; thank you very much! Thanks, but we should really thank J.R.R.T. "There agelong she had dwelt, an evil thing in spider-from, even such as once of old had lived in the Land of the Elves in the West that is now under the Sea, such as Beren fought in the Mountains of Terror in Doriath, and so came to Lúthien upon the green sward amid the hemlocks in the moonlight long ago. How Shelob came there, flying from ruin, no tale tells, for out of the Dark Years few tales have come. But still she was there, who was there before Sauron, and before the first stone of Barad-Dûr" "Great horns she had, and behind her short stalk-like neck was her huge swollen body, a vast bloated bag, swaying and sagging between her legs; its great bulk was black, blotched with livid marks, but the belly underneath was pale and luminous and gave forth a stench. Her legs were bent, with great knobbed joints high above her back, and hairs that stuck out like steel spines, and at each leg's end there was a claw. As soon as she had squeezed her soft squelching body and its folded limbs out of the upper exit from her lair, she moved with a horrible speed, now running her creaking legs, now making a sudden bound"
  19. email sent. Anything yet? [are we there yet] "event was cancelled due to the firmware not being ready." aren't we one month from release to the public? or, maybe not. typical magellan...
  20. Of course we would still need to maintain the platinum membership fees at $9.99/yr as outlined in our charter and the original memorandum of agreement with Groundspeak.
