  1. I agree with roadside caches along major roads. There have been times when I was driving and watching the GPS screen just hoping that a cache was coming within the next 20kms so that I could stop and find something. But there was nothing for 100kms!!! Such a sad tale... Roadside caches in the city though are silly. Get creative, find something historical or clever and hide it with that purpose, just don't drop trash off on the side of the road and call it a cache. P.S. Larks, you need to come back south for caching!
  2. When is your "roadshow" coming south west?
  3. New service out there for SA. Streetmaps.co.za I suppose it is only a matter of time before Google Maps & G Earth get full street coverage of the country, but you can use this for now to get imagery of areas you might be caching in with all the nearby streets. Enjoy.
  4. Right. I see now. MapInstall was the piece I was missing. Thanks. Hopefully in the future they will integrate all three programs into one so that we have a simple solution on the Mac platform.
  5. Yes, here is how to do it: On the top of Bobcat, on the left side, next to where it shows your device, are two icons, either of which can be selected. They are labeled "Send" and "Receive." In the above case, simply select "Send." Make sure that your GPSr is connected to the computer prior to starting up Bobcat. Thanks for the reply. I saw those buttons, tried them and all that sent was the generic sample routes and waypoints that comes preinstalled when Bobcat installs. There is no option to select the map and transfer that to the GPS. In the PC version, you can select the map (turns pink) and then when you select send it gives a dialog box that shows maps selected and will be sent to GPS. Am I missing the map select tool? I see my GPS, I have the map displayed on the screen but from there I don't see the way to transfer it. Thanks in advance for the help.
  6. Anyone Know how to transfer maps from bobcat to GPS? I am struggling to see the tool to select maps like in the PC version of Mapsource.
  7. Un amigo mio me dio un cache el domingo pasodo. Es del tamanyo de una uña! Tambien, tengo un cache listo que se parece como una piedra. Lo voy a dejarlo en un jardin a lado del monte aqui en Cape Town.

    I spy

I spy Jors & QFC! Howdy folks.
  9. Was caching at dusk the other day. In the path were two objects, but I didn't get a good look at them, just got a scare since I have stepped near puff adders before along a trail. Only after my buddy also got a fright, did we realize it was two small tortoises headbutting each other!!! The girls coming behind us got a good laugh at us.
  10. Thought it would be fun to get a list of world geocaching records together. This has come from one of my caches that I believe holds a record. Cook Stream It started off as a normal traditional, than I moved from New Jersey to Cape Town, South Africa. While living here the cache needed some maintenance, so I asked some friends here that were going to America on holiday to swing past asnd replace the cache box for me. Sure enough, the Huskies did it and brought the old box back to South Africa (it is on the shelf behind me as I type this!). I went abotu 4 months ago and checked on the cache myself and found the new box, huskies cache card and the cache in fine shape. 7,820 miles/12,600 km as the crow flies! I think this is a world record for cache maintanence. Anyone know of a further distance? Let's hear other tales of world records in geocaching.
  11. I came to the SA caching scene in the Spring of 2005. I found Zulu 7 near Rhodes memorial as my first SA cache only to receive an email from Discombob stating that it was hidden by an American! Anyways, bob invited me out caching on Devils peak with Emzett (from Germany). I actually took at mini-bus taxi to get to Rhodes to meet them for the cache! There were not many caches in the Southern Suburbs at that time. I remember placing caches and than feeling bad that people would re-travel to the area to find them after being here the past week. I did most of my caching by mini-bus in those days as I was without a car. Even got a lift to Greyton for one of TVM great-meat-braai events with Goofster. In 2006 it seems that caching in the WC really hit a high. We were organized and cached loads together in groups. I even remember Globatrat teasing us about if you don't find the cachin in a minute, than call the owner on the phone for the clue. I think we cached in groups at least once a month up the west coast, Silvermine, Montagu, etc. Good times!!! Things I think have slowed now. Even mentioned this to the Huskies last weekend while caching. Perhaps most of the teams have found all the caches in the region. Who knows... In my 2.5 years in CPT though, caching has grown by the number of caches available to find. Not sure if the overall number of cachers active at any given time has grown though. Anyone know?
  12. Hey, Really nice seeing the three of you. Have a safe and pleasant trip back to Oz. *And thanks for the treats to torture the local cachers with! -Vespax & Geo-P.
  13. I'll pop in a little later. Maybe about 1:30 or so. Little Geo-P has to have his lunch first. The Barnyard is across the street from the American Embassy and Steenberg shopping Centre for those who don't know.
  14. Happy New Year everyone! Thought I would mention that the Huskies have made it on Podcacher in the New Years Episode regarding my Coook Stream Cache in America. It mentioned the distance the Huskies traveled to replace the box for me. So although it is not a SA cache, it does put SA cachers on the map in the podcacher audio. Thanks for the heads up Huskies!
  15. We'll be around throughout the month. Geo-P would love to meet other little geocachers!

    I spy

I spy no one! Quite in here today... You are correct Tommy. I have changed my pic to one of a geocache. Anyone know which one it is (no giving it up Huskies!!!)?
  18. Got the nod of approval today from our friend Erik. All welcome, please come as Santa would! and have a pleasant hour or so of silly Christmas fun in windy PE. White Geocache Elephant There are a few caches nearby to be found also. I might just hide one before the day for good measure as well. See you all there. Trading swag, cache boxes and more!
  19. Doesn't GlobalRat have some? I seem to remember him asking for people to place a cache near stadiums to document construction progress. I think CT's cache is on Signal Hill overlooking the Green Point common. Bring the TB's south you northern countries!!!
  20. Happy Valley seems fine. How's the afternoon? Thinking of a little Christmas themed get together meet & greet.

  22. I cruise in a doppy little red Mazda 323. It goes 4x4ing in some rough areas because I could careless what happens to it. Geo-P and I also find some caches in this mean machine...
  23. I've done more than 20 in a day with Larks and Chaka in Jo'burg. But those are easy caches up there! Don't rush all the caches. Enjoy the hobby, pace yourself and you can do it for a longer period of time without running out of caches to find.
