  1. I have yet to experience the thrill of finding my first cache (I blame the ridiculous amounts of snow we have been receiving in the past month) but I have already created some signature items in preparation. I put together a stamp with my username and the year and I hand stamp both 1.5" wooden nickles and some handmade "fimo nickles" and put them into tiny ziploc baggies. They might be silly but I like them! Also, check out this topic in the forums. It gives you a really good idea what others leave and I have seen some trading. Be aware that the older posts are from a few years ago!
  2. Just to update when I first unpacked and tried everything on my Windows 7 pc NOTHING was working. Not GSAK, Cache register, or the send to gps plugins. Instead I downloaded Cache register onto that laptop running vista and everything worked exactly like it should. Out of curiosity I just plugged the gps into my pc (windows 7) after having not changed anything since the last time I tried and failed and cache register worked perfectly. I have no idea why it worked this time but I'm not going to complain. I really hope your problem resolves itself 2outforfun! I took my pn-40 out to find my very first cache only to realize that caching under a foot of snow probably isn't the best idea for a noob.
  3. I had already loaded some of the TOPO 8 software onto my sd card but I used an external card reader for quicker results. To test to make sure it wasn't a connection issue I went ahead and put Michigan's maps on there through the internal sd transfer and everything went smoothly. I should have explained myself a little better. I was suggesting loading the topo software onto your computer, starting up the program with the PN-40 connected, and then checking for communication using the "Exchange" dialog box. Another symptom of a bad cable is that you can send to the 40/sd card in "map transfer" mode but it will fail in "data exchange" mode so sending maps to the sd card may work but sending geocaches won't. While in the exchange dialog box, if you can send maps to the 40 but not waypoints (or if it sends a few waypoints and then hangs up), I'm confident your problem is a flaky cable as I and others experienced the same problem when the 40 first came out. A call to Delorme will get a new cable sent out right away. Okay I put the topo software onto the computer that was having problems and started it up with my pn-40 connected. It brought up the exchange dialog box but kept freezing the program. I am definitely going to take your advice and give Delorme a call, I would really like to use my own computer for all of my gps stuff. =) Thanks!
  4. I don't know why I didn't think of that, I guess I was just too caught up in making it work on my own pc. Anyway, I downloaded cache register on my partner's laptop (running vista) and it worked perfectly!!! Now I'm ready to cache! Not that this is a big deal but how do I view the log description or hints? When I click on the caches it shows me the name, coords, D/T, Size, and the last logged but that is it. Not that I am complaining, trust me...I'm just happy to be able to cache!!!
  5. Just to clarify I did post above that a cache I had attempted to send to gps did in fact make it in there somehow but I haven't been able to put any others onto my gps through either FF 3.5 or IE8.0 they both say they cannot find the device.
  6. Thanks for all of the responses! I checked my gps and there isn't anything in the waypoint area either and I did visit the delorme forums. It seems no one was having my exact problems but I followed troubleshooting tips on similar problems with no luck. (Including firmware updates, resetting factory settings, deleting possible corrupted cache register files, taking the sd card out because apparently some units have a problem while it is in the unit, and trying to use IE for send to gps, and nothing worked.) The solution to that is to go to your account preferences and make sure that you've selected GPX 1.0 for your PQs, not GPS 1.0.1 I did double check my account preferences and it does say GPX version 1.0. Yes and I always make sure Data Exchange is selected. Nope, I only hear the sound if I turn the gps off or unplug/plug it in. Well if you mean going to the menu>Device Setup>Connect to Computer>Data Exchange then yes. I did notice the Delorme forums mentioning that and tried IE 8.0 instead. It could not find my device. I also followed advice of some other posters and downgraded to FF 3.5 and I no longer have the plugin problem but it also does not find my device. (Although it said it could not find my device I did check my gps about an hour later while trying out some other things and the 1 cache I had tried to send through FF 3.5 showed up there. It didn't have any cache info (only title) but it was there!!!) I had already loaded some of the TOPO 8 software onto my sd card but I used an external card reader for quicker results. To test to make sure it wasn't a connection issue I went ahead and put Michigan's maps on there through the internal sd transfer and everything went smoothly. I have done this and tried messing with GSAK and all of the macros you suggested. For some reason GSAK confuses me so badly and I just cannot figure it out. I'm going to mess with it some more but so far I haven't been successful with anything I have tried.
  7. Also, I just finished troubleshooting cache register from Delorme's site with no improvement. I also made sure I didn't have "Include Pocket Query name in download file name" checked and it was not. =/
  8. Darn, I was really hoping this would fix it but I tried all 4 of the usb ports on the back of my pc with the same results. =( Thanks though!
  9. Okay forgive me if this has been addressed before but I'm very new to all of this. I received my brand new PN-40 today in the mail and eagerly upgraded to a premium membership, ran a PQ, bought Cache Register and then everything started going downhill. I logged into cache register and had my PQ available and waiting for me so I plugged in "agent orange", set it to data exchange, and it began to sync....and sync....and it never actually did anything. So I turned it off and started over with the same result. Then I downloaded and tried GSAK and when I try to send the waypoints through that method, nothing happens. I've tried updating firmware, restoring factory settings, taking out the SD card, and reinstalling all programs with no luck. Is there something basic I am missing here? It is connecting to my pc, I hear the confirmation noises when connecting and disconnecting it...I just don't know why nothing will transfer to the gps. Please help! I'm running Windows 7, if that makes any difference. When I try to upload each cache individually I get a plugin error through FF 3.6 no matter how many times I dl it and when I try through IE 8.0 it doesn't find the device.
