  1. I have the cheapest little yellow Etrex, and it's not the unit that's difficult, it's that the instruction manual doesn't make sense. I had it at our CITO event this past weekend, and our entire table of geeks couldn't make heads or tails from that manual....eventually they just started pushing buttons on the thing.....I have no idea what coords they programmed in, but I'm still wandering around...... seriously, if you have any doubt on figuring it out, hang around the store and have the salesperson work through it with you....the extra time spent will be worth it (well, worth it for you, but for the salesclerk, maybe not so much....)
  2. I think it all depends..... if you come across a bunch of them on the go, hot on the hunt, then they'd be a cohort of cachers..... if you find them and add them to your treasure of friends, then they'd be a cache of cachers..... I haven't yet found a clique of cachers, though....with some of the threads I've seen in these forums, they're easy enough to get into....it's getting (and staying) out of them that's the real trick....
  3. yes, of course I must weigh in on this topic..... for those of you that do want to calculate your body mass index (BMI, which adjusts for weight, height, gender, age), here are some links, or you can google "body mass index" to find a BMI calculator or BMI website that you like best: http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/av.htm http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/calc-bmi.htm http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/bmi-for-age.htm yes, absolutely, it's not just about fat, or BMI for that matter, it's about fitness, stamina, and being in shape. but for those of you who are just in the "beginning throes" of reclaiming your fitness, and if you might be in a "high risk" category (e.g. extremely obese, personal or family history of cardiovascular problems,etc).....please think about first making an appointment with a health care professional who can talk you through a reasonable workout plan, including how to incrementally step-up the strenousness over time, and can show you how to monitor your heart rate to make sure you're staying safe....if not for yourself, then do it for us.....you know, we worry..... now, about that other topic "do chicks dig big guys".....I think, for gal's, it's not so much about big guys or small guys or tall guys or short guys or beefy guys or lean guys......it's more about a "guy guy" being a stand-up guy, being a good guy, a well-balanced guy (confident but not arrogant, sensitive but not whiney, attentive but not controlling, etc), not a shallow guy, not a gay guy, and whatever the guy's physical attributes, those are secondary.....seriously, just check out Match.com, and compare the guy's profiles to the gal's profiles....... the gal's profiles HARDLY EVER mention a guy's physical attributes as important; yet nine times out of ten, no nineteen out of twenty, or twenty nine times out of thirty, the guy's profiles mention that they're looking for a gal that's "attractive", or "pretty", or "slim", or some other measure of "physical worth"....I'm telling ya, I ain't making this stuff up, check it out for yourself........
  4. Hey, I'm famous, I just was in the newspaper: http://photos.qconline.com/photog/vgallery...=Monica%20Smith (awww...does that count toward my 15 minutes of fame?....shoot, and I haven't yet appeared on Jerry Springer.....)
  5. Hi everyone, now that this discussion has simmered down to a "low boil", would it be okay with everyone if we perhaps moved this thread "back inside" to the off-topic forum? My concern is that "new folks" might drop by this website for information and discussions about geocaching, and find themselves inadvertently exposed to a discussion that offends their sensibilities and perhaps turn them off to geocaching or geocachers.... I'm not saying we shouldn't discuss this topic - I think you should, since "clean family-friendly parks" are important to geocachers, hikers, and others who enjoy the enjoyment of the outdoors. But it's just that, with Earth Day and upcoming CITO events, the PR is going to perhaps bring a lot more "outsiders" dropping by this site, so maybe we can just move this discussion off the "front porch" and inside to the off-topic forum......'company's comin", let's put our best face forward?
  6. I just got back from delivering a truckload of furniture to my Mom in StLouis, and while there caught my nephew's "last great performance" as Harold Hill in the school play at my old High School alma mater (he's a graduating senior, and is leaving to study for the priesthood, so no more drama for him.....then again, maybe just new drama of a different sort....). And now I'm catching up on what I missed in the forums for the past couple days.....boy, never a dull moment with this crowd....
  7. am I too late? did I already miss all the birthday spankings? and a pinch to grow on, girlfriend! you rock!
  8. ummm guys...? I was joking.....? I will not be making obscene gestures anywhere, rest assured....it ain't my style......it was a JOKE......a joke about spycams..... jeez....
  9. yeah, well, you guys be sure to watch for me with your little spycam caches - I'll be the one making the obscene gestures in the direction of the camera.... (unless I only think there's a spycam when there really isn't one....in which case I'll be the wacked out nutcase making obscene gestures at every tree, bush, and log in the vicinity of every cache I do from here on out.....so watch for me....)
  10. Gosh, HappyG, thanks for your very kind offer of a mental health referral (although one must wonder, if you "really cared", why wouldn't you email me that "help" privately and directly instead of broadcasting your "diagnosis" of my "problem" at the forums? Hmmmm, methinks HappyG's actions speak louder than words.......) so, are you happy now, Happy? How 'bout now, are you happy now? How 'bout now.....NOW are you happy?..... ('cause I'm happy.....I'm VERY happy.....and I'm not even medicated.....)
  11. Hi, I live about a 3-hour drive from Chicago airports which is a main hub for United and American I think (and my local airport of Moline,IL is a final destination, never a layover to anywhere....), and I don't think I'd want to just hang out in an airport anyway (although I do enjoy watching planes take off and land....), BUT, having said all that, and assuming that this would "fit" within the topic of this thread, here is what I would offer to anyone with an upcoming long Chicago layover (either most of the day, or an overnight): If you will be in Chicago after April 16 (that's our CITO event here in Iowa, can't miss that) or through May or maybe even June (but June gets a bit "iffy" for me), I've been trying to make the time to get over to Chicago for the BodyWorlds exhibit (described in the links below). So, if you will be stuck in the Chicago airport for a loooong time, or even want to just go ahead and make it an overnight layover there to catch an early flight out to wherever, and if you are also interested in seeing the BodyWorlds exhibit (and depending on how much time you have, we could catch some other Chicago sites also), then I can drive over and pick you up from the airport, chauffer you to and from hotel if needed, and return you to airport after. So, if interested just email me, or I'll try to remember to monitor this thread for posts but I might not see it so you'd be better off to email me. Best wishes- -Monica ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ http://www.msichicago.org/ http://www.msichicago.org/bodyworlds/ BODY WORLDS features more than 200 authentic human specimens, including entire bodies as well as individual organs and transparent body slices. BODY WORLDS offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see and understand our own physiology and health and to gain new appreciation and respect for what it means to be human. 12. Hi, if you're still writing your article about geocaching and grandkids, and if this helps: Unlike some of the "lifers" here, I only recently stumbled into this game following the article in Parade magazine last fall. I take my grandkids hiking, and thought the geocaching would add an extra fun element of "treasure seeking" to our hikes, also giving me a chance to talk to them about satellites, technology, navigation, etc. They're very young, so as little as I know about these topics, I can still impress them with my smarts. Since I still haven't made the time to get proficient at using my GPS, etc, I'm not so much a bonafide geocacher yet, more of a "poser" -- oh, geez, I'm not even a "real" geek, I'm just a "poser geek" -- how bad is that?? so, yeah, if you want to describe in your article the full gamut of folks in this game, then at the other end of the spectrum from the "extreme sport cachers" who scuba, or who rappel into ravines for that Level 5 prize, are folks like me who just do it in a low-level, noncompetitive, casual level of fun. But I did take the lead on organizing a local CITO event here in Iowa for Earth Day, and I'll be taking my grandkids with me there for more of that insidious "teaching by example".......
  13. how do I post a photo here?
  14. I vote for Geeks Gone Wild. or Geeks + Jeeps + GPS = Geocaching
  15. How about this one then? that's the one! thank you thank you!
  16. you're absolutely right - this should be a fun experience for everyone involved. and sorry that this discussion (perhaps my doing) got sidetracked from the "real issue", i.e. that if someone decides to pursue a cache that involves a webcam monitoring, then the cache poster should let people know UP FRONT that the cache is being monitored, and thereby allow each cacher to make an informed decision about whether they want to have their image broadcast via webcam. Why would you not grant them that simple decent common courtesy? How does that subtract from your "entertainment factor" by allowing people the CHOICE of whether or not to seek out webcam-monitored caches? Isn't that really their decision to make (whether they want their image broadcast via webcam), and not YOUR decision? I'm not saying that webcam caches shouldn't be allowed - I think they should. I just think they should also be clearly identified as such, as a decent common courtesy to other cachers.
  17. no, it wasn't any of those pics -- hopefully it'll turn up. p.s. to Tahosa - yeah, that cache should be re-named "Ducky Doo Doo for Dodos"....
  18. Sorry not seeing things that way at all. If you are out in public you have no right to any expectation of privacy. By the looks of this site there are plenty of places you need to avoid and likely would never even know it. gosh, you're absolutely right - and I also have no right to expect people not to fart in a crowded elevator -- but most decent, civilized and respectful folks know better than to do so...... just because one is "allowed" to do something (like stalking or spying on people without their knowledge), doesn't mean you should. And just because so many people today seem to be experiencing a mass "moral slippage" regarding their behavior and attitudes towards others, doesn't mean I need to ascribe to it, just because it's apparently become rampant in modern society. I can choose to treat others with courtesy and respect, even if they have no "right" to expect that from me. I also "Choose" to take (and hold) the higher ground, and to pass on values of decency (respect for yourself and for others) to the next generation -- jeez, apparently SOMEONE has to.....it's become a sad state of affairs, for sure......
  19. I'm looking for a funny pic that I remember being posted on one of the threads having to do with female geocachers, or a chick-only event, or something like that.....I searched all the threads I could track done, but just can't find this pic: Someone had used photoshop editor to amalgam a really funny ugly girl face: I think she had braids, and teeth from a monkey photo, and I forget what else, but it was a real hoot, and I can't find it for the life of me. Anybody got this pic, that they can re-post it?
  20. oh, I have a definitie opinion (read: bug up my butt) about this topic: Generally, spying on people without their knowing about it, is wrong, rude, disrespectful, creepy, and downright pathetic. Yes, there are instances when "watching" is warranted - and in such justified cases one should expect clear notice alerting them that they are being watched (and that their "privacy" is being violated: A convenience store, bank, etc with security cams will post a notice that "you are being watched". To spy on a geocacher, and even worse post their image on a public-access webcam for the "enjoyment" of the world without their knowledge or consent? That's dead wrong, and makes me personally want to drop out of this game and community, for my own protection and privacy. If anyone decides to proceed with posting (or authorizing) a webcam-watched cache site, then you also have a clear obligation to also post that info so the cacher can decide whether they even want to be watched, or have their image broadcast. Myself - no thanks. It's creepy and wrong.
  21. If you post in the international section there is no need to register. If you wish to register to view or post in the other sections all you need to fill in is user name, password and email address. The ones you used for this site will work if you enter them. Don't worry about MSN, ICQ etc. The forum is a modified php bb, similiar to that used to host millions of forums around the world. There are a number of cachers in the Sydney area who should be able to assist with the TBs. per your advice, I did try again using my username and password that I use in the Groundspeak forums. But I received the error message that these usernames/passwords were incorrect or inactive. ???? sorry (duh!)
