  1. Yes, we are. From there to Florida and now are in Texas. Glad there's still some of ours around though I'm surprised.
  2. I upgraded from the '30 to the 64s last year and couldn't be happier. The 30 was a GREAT unit, but I really loaded it down with lots of maps, custom overlay maps and trail overlay maps. It had no issues with screen redraws while driving or hiking, but panning the map more than a full screen width could take 10 seconds before it was done redrawing the screen. Zooming out a couple levels was the same. That got a little tedious at times. I passed the display at REI and played with the 64s for a couple minutes. When I saw how fast the screen redraws were, I was sold. Might not matter so much to someone else who isn't quite as 'map crazy' as I am, though. And now for something completely off-topic. Are you the 'Bob and Kath' who used to live in Aurora or North Aurora, IL? If so, I have found a couple of your adopted-out caches. If not, sorry. If so, thanks.
  3. Have to admit, I'm leaning toward the 64S. The 20 seems pretty small.
  4. You might call Garmin direct I did and got a Map 64st for 280.00 total with tax was 303.00 and they waived the shipping fee. if that's helps you make a better decision. since you have an old Garmin the y will give you up to a 20 percent discount. Dion
  5. My old, old Etrex has died and we're trying out a 64S and an Etrex 20. We're pretty basic cachers, have 10,000+ finds, have been using our old Etrexes to find the caches and iPhones to log them. Have used some maps on the phone when we've been on trails. We don't really use an arrow--we just look for the coordinates. I know, weird, but it has worked for us. We're really not looking for a big learning curve but if it would help out, we'd take the time. We travel a lot so maps are becoming more helpful. We like the size of the 64S better and the buttons but it's pricier. Looking for what people think, what sites to go to for maps, any info people can share. Thanks.
  6. None of the icons provided come close to the traditional treasure chest type. All three of my earlier Auto GPSrs have had that option. Is there one available for download?
  7. That's a fascinating page. Thanks. GlobalSat says explicitly that they use the missing SSP support to communicate with devices. That explains why they don't work. I suppose that the others are the same. I have found one Bluetooth GPS receiver that works with iOS devices: the Dual Electronics XGPS150. Now I wonder how they managed that. Just noticed your comment re XGPS150. We are getting an iPod Touch 4 for purposes other than caching, but have seen several devices that will give the iPod the same on-trail capabilities as a regular GPSr. The reviews on Amazon for this unit are very good, but not one of them mention using it for caching. One reviewer uses his for running trails. He was happy with it except he thought the velcro arm strap was uncomfortable. If you use the XGPS150 for caching, where to you put the "puck" so that it gets a good view of the sky yet is comfortable and secure while BWing? Any other thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks
  8. We couldn't believe the map when we looked at it. No street names until you zoomed way in and then, of course, you couldn't see the nearby caches. One major road in our area has a completely wrong name. Tried the aerial view and that worked at first but now doesn't work at all. And when it did work, no street names--no hybrid view--which has always helped us. We went through the beta phase with the mapping and this is what we get? Why? We're really disappointed with this new map as I'm sure that other cachers will be and we're hoping to see things change.
  9. We're looking at upgrading the maps in our Garmin 275T. But, we can get Lifetime maps on some of the new gps units for slightly more cost than downloading lifetime maps for our current Garmin Nuvi 275T. Question: can caches be downloaded and can cache coordinates be entered manually to all current auto GPS models?
  10. We posted this on the Florida website but don't know how much that gets used. So thought we'd try it here, too. We are recent transplants to Florida and love to cache. We're having a very difficult time finding anything but strip malls to hide anything in since the Sarasota parks involve such an involved process of approval. Just found an area today and learned that it's an "aesthetic undeveloped area" for the county even though it's not signed as such. We've tried to get caches approved--hopefully one will be happening soon after a month. In the meantime, the Geocache approver suggested that holding a CITO event could convince the county that caching can be a good thing. He said that it worked in Pinellas Co. We live in Venice and haven't seen a lot of cachers from this area. Are there others of you out there who would support and work on a CITO event? If so, please contact us at kathleenglenney@comcast.net. If this could make a huge difference, we would organize it. We have great parks! Bob and Kath
  11. I have two puzzle ideas that I want to incorporate into our cache descriptions. One is simply a text document but I want to keep the formatting. The other is a crossword puzzle with extra text added. I love both these ideas and have worked the puzzles out. Now I just have to figure out how to get them there. Can anyone help me? The crossword is currently a PDF file. The extras to that haven't been added. And the other one will just be a word document but I needto keep the formatting. Any help would be gratefully appreciated!
  12. I want to put a crossword puzzle on a cache listing for solving purposes. But I do not know exactly how to do it. I know that you can upload to a site. However, I'm afraid that the layout won't look right once I do it. Any suggestions? I love my idea and don't want to give it up.
  13. Since there are so many caches in the Kane County Forest Preserve areas, we figure that there is no problem with placing one there. Since I posted, we have gotten permission from Geneva to place a cache. In St. Charles, there is a person that you have to talk to. She wanted to see exactly where we were going to put the cache. And since many of their parks are cooperative with the Illinois Natural Resources, you have to have their permission, too. We decided that was too much to go through and just found a different area.
  14. We've got a good idea for a cache but found out we had to write a letter to St. Charles, IL park district to get permission to hide it. Just found another place in Geneva, IL that would work but the one cache I had seen hidden in a Geneva park has disappeared from the website. Anyone know about permissions from parks in these areas? We've hidden things in Batavia with no problem and there are tons along the river. We're just trying to branch out!
  15. I just saw that someone else thought a TB would be in a cache and wasn't. I don't think it's always a late find report. I think there's confusion--at least for me. Do you have to log on the TB site AND the cache site? It would seem that if you log on one, the TB I guess, that would take care of it. I love TB's and don't want to mess things up but it seems like there is a lot of entering involved. Am I missing something?
  16. My husband and I were talking about this rating thing last night. Then if it's supposed to be wheelchair accessible, does that mean someone should be able to reach from their wheelchair and grab the cache?
  17. We've dropped a couple of caches, are new cachers. Someone emailed me and said that our cache shouldn't be rated a 1 for terrain since it wasn't wheelchair accessible. You have to go up a small incline in bark chips to get to it, no more than 10 feet off a paved trail. Frankly, the only true wheelchair accessible caches we have found have been pavement only. We've rated our caches terrain-wise in terms of how far off the trail, pretty much. And if there's just grass to walk on, we figure that's not a problem. I'd like to hear what other cachers think. Our caches are in Illinois, if that makes a difference. Thanks!
  18. We are just starting geocaching and are looking at the areas that our children live in--FL, TX, and MO. I've put some zipcodes in but don't see much compared to our area in Batavia, IL. Am I missing something? Specifically we're looking at Mansfield, TX, south of FW, St. Louis, and Venice, FL. If I'm not doing something correctly, please clue me in. Thanks!
