  1. Are we nominating or voting? Just in case we're voting, and it IS election day, we vote for Keystone and Capt Buckeye! Together, they have helped make NE Ohio a great place to cache! We LOVE our reviewers here! They are always friendly and helpful. (We personally only have a few caches which were placed long ago, so this shouldn't be considered sucking up! Ha!) Good luck to all the reviewers! What a nice prize!
  2. I'd also say it's definitely one of Funky Monkey's sig items. We see them allllll over the place here in NE Ohio! There are little mini-monkeys too now!
  3. Even though we only met Eric a couple of times at local events, he made us feel so welcome that we found ourselves looking for him at the events we were attending. Reading thru the tributes on the geochums site, it looks like 'welcoming the new people' was a wonderful habit of his! It seems almost out of character for someone so quiet. We will miss him at every event we attend from here on. We only spent a few minutes with him, but the thought of him being gone is still bringing tears to my eyes and an urge to write to his family to tell him what a wonderful young man he was. I hope that they have access to these sites and can later read thru some of the comments that people from all over the country have written about their son!
  4. The Caching Karma Stick was one of the first TBs that I became aware of when we first started geocaching. It must've been "back home" about that time, but I being such a newbie, missed it. Just dropped in here via a link thru the Geochums forums. We'd love to log the stick when it makes it's homecoming, whenever that may be. Add us to your list please! Thanks Mr. Bass!
  5. When we first started this crazy pasttime, we avoided virtuals. Why go if there's nothing to find? Now, having a bit more experience, we've found that we like to "save" the virtuals for a beautiful day when all we want to do is take a hike and there's the special bonus of seeing something with that "wow" factor along the way. And with the virtuals, that's almost a "promise" given by our fellow cachers (who submitted it) and by GC.com (who approves it). It's a sure-fire way to see something worth seeing that otherwise we might drive or walk by. I don't see (yet) how Waymarking will assure us of the "wow" factor for our time (and yes...our gas!). It looks like a fun site. I see the benefits. I just don't see how it replaces virtuals on GC.com. Maybe I just don't know my way around it yet, but I'm already missing the idea of new virtuals and getting the "wow - I'm so glad someone wanted me to see this" feeling.
  6. Wow. I found this topic interesting because I'm talking to another local cacher about this right now. We placed a 1/1 cache at a local memorial that was just dedicated this week. Our thinking was to get people to come out to view the memorial (not trample the grounds), so we did it as a 1/1 just off the actual memorial site. Here another local cache had been planning a 3-star cache (also off the site a bit). He expressed his disappointment but was gracious and said "first come first serve". We're now discussing with him the possibility that after a few months when most locals have come to do ours, we'll archive it so he can place his 3-star. In exchange, he'll archive one of his easier caches in a local park and let us place one there! We're in a cache-dense area and we thought that this would be to both of our advantages because we'll get to place some new caches and give the locals new caches to find (when gas is $2.xx it's nice to be able to get some local caches!)
  7. Our stepdaughter went to work one day and had a wierd feeling in her arm and hand. Drove herself to the hospital. Two years later (and lots of diagnosis's along the way) she ended up having a heart transplant. We totally understand life throwing you a curve every now and then! No one should bash you in ANY way! It's totally great that you're back and able to think about recreational things instead of medical things! Have FUN! You've earned it!
  8. Our friends We R Lewis & Clark leave the best FTF swag! They fill their caches with homemade embroidered "mug rugs", custom made geocaching keychains, etc. They also make a custom embroidered patch with the cache name on it for the FTF'er. It's fun to try and collect the patches for the local caches they hide around here! And the really clever STF prize is a custom made tissue holder filled with tissues (for them to dry their sniffles with when they just missed the FTF!)
  9. Can't watch the feed - I'm at work on a dial-up connection. The suspense is killing me! Are they on H3777?
  10. I was really bothered by the video link. I was amazed at how most of the representatives in the room weren't even paying attention and were talking and joking amongst themselves. That's fine I guess if you totally understand the issue, but they admitted themselves that they don't! I was also kind of bothered that geocaching was repeatedly referred to as a "game". Just my opinion, but I consider this to be a hobby of mine. Just like hiking, or biking, or climbing, etc. I've been racking my brain to think of another hobby (or sport) where the participants take trash bags and pick up trash while they participate. (On the contrary....marathon runners, marathon bikers, etc. actually create trash by pitching their water bottles as they race!) One last thing...how do you post No Tresspassing signs on every cemetary? I, for one, do visit cemetaries to pay respects to deceased friends and family. Would a historian then be tresspassing if he was there doing research?
  11. Sorry - ignore this second post...this is what happens when you are supposed to be working....
  12. I personally get sick and tired of getting the knees of my jeans dirty almost everytime we go out! Seems no matter how hard I try to keep them clean, I end up kneeling in the dirt at some point! I work at a furniture store and one day they were throwing away leather swatches. "WAIT! Give me one of those!" It now accompanies me every time we go out. It folds up small to carry and when needed, I can put the "finished" side down, kneel on it, and brush it off when done! It can be "sat upon" as well! If it gets really muddy, it has a grommet in the corner. I can clip it to a carabiner on my pack and it'll be dry enough to brush off in a few minutes (usually by the time we hike back to the truck!).
  13. Dan, Dan, Dan....you're not going all the way to Atlanta to be FTF just because you've sworn off being FTF here in Akron, are you???
  14. OMG! I laughed so hard over the bus story my sides hurt! Thanks! Whenever I'm in a bad mood, I'll think about that! Too funny!
  15. I just discovered geocaching in November (2004). I live near Akron OH. My original goal was to "clear" my first cache page by finding them all. I haven't been able to do that yet because new caches keep popping up all the time! (And I work ) I think that the NE Ohio area is full of active cachers and there are constantly new caches here - even all winter long they kept 'em coming. I recently hid my first cache and it was placed on hold b/c it was too near another cache. I tried to argue that point w/the Approver. I figured I lived two blocks from the two caches - I should know, right? Turns out, THEY were right! After several (very polite) emails back and forth, I moved the cache and it got approved and I received a VERY nice follow-up email from our Approver, which was not necessary - they were just being NICE! I'm not sure what "Ohio" you live in, but geocaching is very much alive and well here!
  16. It's me again. Now that I have this cool logo to use, my Geohubby says, "Why are WE wyze01?" He's got a point. I started out by myself but he quickly became obsessed as well. I was just using an old computer name I'd used for years whenever one was required. It DOESN'T really make sense when there are two of us! Dino Hunters (or any talented person..) can you add a lowercase "s" to the logo you made me so that we can be "a couple" again? It would read: wyze01s Sorry to be a pest, but I just made a deal with a printer I know to make me up a gazillion little waterproof labels to use. I need to get the change to him and I'm too art-challenged to know how to alter it!
  17. Cool, Dino Hunters!! I was thinking something cartoony, but I kinda' like that! Especially like the play on the colors and the block design! I am in total and complete AWE of creative folks like you all!
  18. Finally. A topic that got me to quit lurking! I just can't believe you all are sharing your talents like this! I'm relatively new to Geocaching, but since discovering it in November, it has pretty much consumed my life! I would love an avatar that could be used on signature items (micros too - we live in N. Ohio!) My Geoname is WYZE01 and I am female and cache with my Geohubby. I am NOT into owls and I don't wear glasses (yet) - I know WYZE01 lends itself to both. I do love dogs...big...dogs like goldens or shepherds. We use a Garmin Etrek Legend (blue). I'm a bit geeky. We love the outdoors. Have a 4x4 SUV. Especially crave anything w/the geocaching colors! Don't want anything evil or mean looking. A fun or mysterious look would be cool. Thanks for any ideas!!
