  1. People who never log a DNF. I recently saw a cache page where someone had a found log saying "This is the fifth time I've come here looking for the cache, and I finally found it!" I looked through the cache logs, and they didn't log a DNF for any of their previous attempts. I feel logging a DNF is a courtesy to other cachers and COs.
  2. A Bobcam Challenge: A thru Z Alphabet Challenge: "TopGear Style" Both of these are old enough to be grandfathered regarding the newer challenge cache guidelines. Note: The Boreal Walker cache I was thinking about earlier turned out to be a traditional cache rather than a challenge. Yeah... It was the TopGear Style challange that brought this to my mind. I was mistaken, it's actually a "U" cache that's not available. (Not a "Q" cache.) I wasn't really intending on pointing out a specfic cache or hider. I was more curious what others thought should happen from a theoretical perspective on challange caches that are no longer possible for a new person to complete.
  3. There is a challange cache in my area that requires finders to first find 32 other caches. Each of those cache names must start with a unique letter of the alphabet and be hidden by a specific cache owner. That specific cacher hasn't been active in over a year, and there is no longer a cache available by him that starts with a "Q". So... unless you happened to find a cache of his in the past that no longer exists, it's impossible to meet the challange the requirement. Should that type of challange still be active? I'm thinking it should be archived so the space is available for a cache that is actually atainable.
  4. I don't remember anyone trading a GPS receiver, but they've traded other items like watches in past seasons. However, I think the rules have been revised in recent seasons to prohibit using personal property like that. I found a couple of sites which listed the "rules" for The Amazing Race and both indicated that participants were not allowed to possess a cellphone, PDA, GPS (or almost any kind of electronics, including a camera), nor are they allowed to bring maps or language books or even written notes. It did indicate that personal items could be sold to obtain money but personal items can not be used to barter for services. I don't know when the episode will be filmed and broadcasted but it would be kind of fun to follow their progress and highlight some of caches they won't find. First episode will air February 19th. I assume they are able to at least identify themselves, but I'm sure they aren't allowed to talk about the race at all until the season is complete. Maybe they'll come on here and tell their story afterwards?
  5. I've always enjoyed The Amazing Race, maybe because it has many similarities to geocaching. Cachers are good at figuring out puzzles, making their way around unknown areas, and understanding clues, right? Now we'll get a chance to find out. The next season of The Amazing Race has a team who lists geocaching as their hobby. Apparently they are from New Port Richley, Florida. Anyone know them? Here's their bio: http://www.cbs.com/shows/amazing_race/cast/81488/
  6. Any time that I have to act "stealthy".
  7. I don't think it would be a problem. I've seen caches around TV show and band themes, and this is the same concept.
  8. 1. If someone hides 500 caches, and they are all high quality, cool! 2. If someone hides 500 low/medium quality caches, but they are in places where others wouldn't be hiding them otherwise, cool! 3. If somone hides 500 low quality caches in an area where other cachers would be hiding high quality ones if space was available, bummer! Unfortunately, I don't see a way of stopping #3 without also limiting #1 and #2.
  9. Agree with some others... you can describe the experience in the log without using overly negative words like "disgusting". i.e. - I found the cache container, but it was covered with grease. I didn't want to get myself messy, so I skipped this one.
  10. I hope that is the case... it looks like around 40 people have logged the cache since "the incident".
  11. It's wet because someone urinated in it. Many of the people finding it don't realize that's the reason it's wet.
  12. I'm pretty sure no one can top this one for worst geocache to find. GC1VJWY - (Green in the middle) I pasted a sample of the logs below. It's like a horror novel as you slowly begin to realize what is going on...
  13. How is it possible that you've been a cacher for 40 years?
  14. I'm looking to buy 2 or 3 unactivated geocoins for around $15 - $20. I'm not too picky, but I'd prefer coins that are more generic and not related to specific events or regions. Contact me if you have any you want to sell.
  15. It would be nice if they could at least figure out a way to let premium members access the extra map features until they get their issues resovled. That would cut down on their load...
  16. Hmm.... I dropped the TB in the cache, and went online about 6 hours later to log the drop. However, the other person had already taken possession of it by then. So, it sounds like there is no way for me to log the drop now?
  17. I dropped off a travel bug in a cache today, and apparently someone already found it and claimed him. I didn't get a chance to mark it as dropped off in the cache, and now this other geocacher is listed as the owner. Is there any way I can still mark it as having visited that cache so it gets credit for it's travels?
  18. I'm wondering if the people who are having problems finding enough worthy caches for favorite points have went on a lot of powertrails? That would kind skew the ratio of finds vs. quality finds. I used all my favorite points, but I tend to be more selective in the caches I search for.
  19. Is the candy wrapper from a sucker and have an indian with a star on it? If so, you could use it to get a free sucker.
  20. You think a site is bad because it might "bring trash to the area"? I think every site could be considered bad using that criteria. I'd say report caches that are illegally placed on private property, but let the rest be. At most, I'd put a comment in your log about why you don't think it's a good site.
  21. I like have geocaches all over the place! I know I don't have to find them all, but it's nice to have the option of looking for them nearly everywhere I go. I like not having to pace myself or ration them, since I know I won't run out of geocaches to do. The complaint about poorly maintained caches is really a seperate issue. There are people who only have one hide, and the cache is poorly maintained. There are people who have 100 hides, and all of them are well maintained.
  22. I agree with this. This sounds like it could be a fun event. I just don't understand the concept of logging a cache on geocaching.com when you didn't actually find the cache. "There are those certain competitors who feel like they still deserve a smley for all the effort! If they could not log them, then they might not want to compete! That's not really a good reason to log a cache as found when the person didn't find it.
