  1. Thank you for the replies. I tried the translator with google and realized that I really misunderstood a log and totally thought it said something different then it did. oops.
  2. Hi All, Is there a way that I could find out what some one wrote in a log that isn't in english? I have a trackable that has traveled to the Netherlands and some of the logs are written in their native language which I have no understanding of at all. I really what to know what is happening with the trackable. Thanks for any help.
  3. Depending on what type of gps you have you can have extra help on gps with premium membership. Such as the full description, hints, and previous logs. Having this has helped me many times in coming up with a smile then a dnf.
  4. I been caching now for about three years. My first year I found 278 caches. The second year I found over 300. I'm in my third year and closing in on 300. I'm in a rural area but there are parts of the area that have four or five in the same park or state game lands. I really enjoy doing this so I guess that way my numbers are what they are. The ease of what people are finding play a big part. The first year I mostly went after larger caches so I wasn't looking for mircos. Now an area that is made up of a lot of those is going to have people giving up quicker then an area that has the ammo can or even a lock n lock. My area now is getting into more of the mircos in any place that will hold one or into how well can I cammo a mirco. I'm not that great with mircos but I have found my share of them.
  5. I was working on finishing up a multi that I was doing but my geo-dog wandered off in a different direction then where I was going. He wasn't coming when I called him so I thought great he got hung up on something. He did this once before catching his collar on a small branch while sniffing under a log. I wander back to where he was and he was digging at something. Long and behold he found an ammo can that wasn't part of the multi I was doing. I was going to find that cache after I had finished the multi and it was already in my gps.
  6. I know I may get some flak calling geocaching a sport but to me its like a sport in many ways. I don't feel a DNF is a failure its sportsmanship. I'm letting others in the sport know that I played the game but didn't win because I didn't find the cache. I'm saying ok I played a good game in looking for it but didn't find it. I think that we look at failure the wrong way. If I fail at something but gave it my best then is it still a failure? Failure is only good if you learn something from it and do better the next time. I don't fail I just didn't suceed.
  7. I am sure this question has been asked before. Is there a way to find caches within your state with the letter or number you need to finish the challenge?
  8. If you want a really good site for ways to use paracord and the knots used to make this items check out tying it all together on Youtube. Its a great site and I have made many of the items listed on that site. There is also a site called Fusion Knots that might be of interest to anyone that wants to use paracord.
  9. I have a different twist on the Leo encounter. I was looking for a cache near a police station. The driveway near the cache was the exit they used leaving the garage. I had the leo stop and ask Can't find it? He then told me to move to the left and walk toward the wall I should find it. I also had a leo pull up next to me while walking on a dirt road to ask why lately there have been so many people walking on this road when it never had been that busy before. I told him about the cache and he was oh that explains a lot and drove off. I wonder if he knew what I was talking about or not.
  10. Be forewarned. The boyscouts have a geocaching badge or belt loop thing similar to the girl scouts and it has been a hot topic with some people. The reason being that part of the requirements are putting a cache in place and watching it for thirty days online. Now there are boy scout caches out there that are well taken care but there are some that once the requirements are met or the boys and leaders move on to the next level the cache is forgotten about. I rather see that the requirements be releasing a TB or coin then placing a cache. The TB could travel are over and that could be exciting to see just where and how far it could go.
  11. I try to write something in the logs for my finds but I don't always have more to say then quickly found or walked right up to it. I don't like using TFTC but I have done so but its been when I'm doing a trail full of caches ( power trail) and they start all being similar. I have written things about the caches on power trails such as the condition of the trail or if there was something that another cachers might want to know. If a cache really was different or really enjoyable I will tell that in my log. I also have sent polite emails to cache owners if I feel that the cache might be muggled due to poor hiding skills or the like. One new CO was glad that I told them I could see the cache from a distance and that I hid it better. Just remember everyone plays this game their own way and the logs are part of the way they play the game.
  12. Don't expect any gps to put you right on top of a cache they just will not do it. There can be as much as 5o to 60 feet difference from the coordinates given on a cache page. When you get close start looking at where you would hide a container in the area. Look for things out of place, and piles of sticks or stones. Containers are not always on the ground. You may need to look in,up and under things to find them. If you haven't started out looking for caches that small or larger and with a terrain rating of 1 or 1.5 then do so. These tend to be easy to find and will help you get an idea of what to look for. Plus I have found gps made that aren't handhelds have a bigger margin of error compared to the handheld devices that are more geared for geocaching.
  13. So glad that you found that poor dog and gave him a ride home. What I can't believe is that someone found him before you did and tied him to the tree without looking for tags or someelse that would give them idea of what to do with him. I would have done the same thing as you did looking for tags and trying to get the poor fellow back to his owners.
  14. I have the same Gps as you do and I find that the compass is a pain over the map so I don't use it. I just use the map. Now one thing I learned was to start with caches that are a 1/1 or 1.5/1 to find so that I would at least hopefully find it. When you get near the GZ start thinking where would I hide this. Look for things that are out of place or different. Remember also that they may not be on the ground. Look up, and in holes in trees. The biggest thing as everyone else said is to have fun going to places you may have never been to if it hadn't been for geocaching. Good Luck and hopefully you will find what you go looking for.
  15. My daughter plays travel softball and 19 is her jersey number. Plus I have found quite a few caches around softball fields.
  16. There is a cache in my area that the all the swag in the container is books. The container is a big ten gallon or bigger bucket with a lid that you have to pull several tab around it to pull the lid off. All the books are in bags that have seals that you squeeze all the air out then push the seal shut. There where several in there that where in Ziploc baggies. I would think that the type of container would make a difference as to if I would put a book in it or not. One that wouldn't take on water or its location would play a big factor as others have stated.
  17. A nano stuck on or in a guardrail that others have found but I have tried 5 times with no luck. I even thought it was gone and asked to see if it had been muggled since it wasn't found in some time before I started to look. The CO had someone look an see if it was still there and its stated to be. I looked with another set of eyes and still have come up empty. Now I'm not the best at finding these things but when its rated as a 1 by 1.5 I would think that I would be able to find the thing wouldn't you. Now that one just must blend in that its in plain sight but I just think that can't be it that I'm looking at. I've also had one that was on a military tank that looked like a handle that belonged where it was placed. Took me a half an hour of looking and saying no thats part of the tank not the container.
  18. My other half has gone with me a few times and some of the trips he has enjoyed. Others he has not. The kids have gone with me as well. My son likes it but other two kids aren't really all the interested. My husband loves the history caches. The ones that have history conected to the cache or the area. We did one that was part of where a hotel and retreat area was back in the 50s and 60s. He got so hung up looking at the ruins and reading all the markers it took much longer to hike to the cache. The area was great and so interesting that I could understand the wanting to real get into the history of the area. I just didn't like all the stops and starts once we started climbing. I just want to keep moving so I wouldn't get the feeling I wasn't going to make it to the top. Made it we did but it was more challenging then both of us wanted it to be. Worth it for the veiw from the top.
  19. I started caching as something I knew I liked from having done it before with my mom before I started on my own. I didn't think I'd be losing any weight or getting fit but I have. Its also taken me places that I didn't know where there and some of these places were breathtaking and so much worth the hike. When I first started I would get tired easy I was that out of shape. Now I have even done 6 to 7 miles in one day caching. I even have had a 5 time DNF and I still haven't gotten back to try again. I thought about looking werid a lot in the beginning but not I just do what I need to do not caring if it looks werid since I found most people are more interested in themselves and what they are doing then you. I only had one encounter with a muggle that came up to me and asked what are you doing when I was looking for a cache in a bush in a park. have fun and good luck finding your first cache.
  20. My mom did geocaching and I tried it several times with her but had fogetten about it after I moved out of the house. Recently there was an article in the local newspaper about geocaching so I looked into it again. At first I didn't have the money for a gps but I kept looking until I found one that I could afford. I have upgraded my gps since that first one. I'm hooked on geocaching and I have even taken my gps on trips and vacation just to see if there was any close by.
  21. I had to laugh reading the orginal post since I made some of those mistakes when I first started out over a year and half ago. I'm still making mistakes but having a blast while doing so. I have become a obessed crazed cacher and right I'm going stir crazy since I can't get out caching with a cast on my driving foot. Darn it. One of the biggest mistakes I made in the beginning was always looking at the gps to make sure I was going the right way even when I had a good distance to go. I now have walked past a spot that is GZ because I'm taking in my surroundigs instead of the gps. lol I also have now made a pack up of things that I wish I had when I first started. Batteries are always now in my pocket since they run out in the middle of doing a hike to a cache. I also now carry a small flashlight plus tweezers. Wish I had known I need them in the begining. Hate to say I cursed out a nano log the first time I opened one and couldn't get the thing out of the container. I did get it out but I ripped it trying. Not something I wanted to do. I have also done creeking crossings and ended up with a wet foot. I one creek I dunked the same foot both times crossing.
  22. you have a foot injury but don't think its bad enough to keep you from finding caches even though it hurts to walk on it some.
  23. I have read the forums stating that most people have found certain type of containers to be good ones. The ammo can, the lock and lock, true nano and of course the bsion tube. Now have any of you found these containers and because of location the turned out not to be a good container? I have found ammno cans with dry contents but the smell inside was just awful. I have also found ammno cans that are rusted and hard to open. I have had a nano screwed so tightly that a all purpose tool couldn't open it without fear of breaking it or stripping the threads, bison tube as well. Of course all of these had dry contents which is the big purpose. Guess maintence plays a big factor as well which I'm sure some of these didn't get.
  24. I have looked at a few of the other websites for caching but I didn't use them since none of them have many caches listed for my state which is PA, close to my location. I figured with that I'll stay with this site. At least there are caches listed and new ones posted all the time.
  25. I am wondering if there is a way to find out if an area had a cache in before. When I started caching I thought that there was a cache in a place in an area nearby me but now I can't find anything to say that there was or wasn't. Is there a way that I could find this information out? Is there a site or a way to see all archived caches within a certain area?
