  1. I just bought a Garmin Oregon 450t. I know nothing about rechargable batteries but hear it's the best option to go with. Can someone give me a brief explanation of the different types and recommend some specific sets with links possibly? Thank you
  2. I downloaded the software but it still doesn't recognize my gps. After installing plug in it did a test and said it was successful. Being brand new maybe I'm forgetting a step. Any info would be helpful!
  3. Just got me my first GPS. It's a Garmin Oregon 450t last night. I considered the Oregon 550t but the camera was only fair at best so i decided against it. I had a few questions. It came with a quick start guide only in the box. Is this normal? I know there are Manuals online but just wanted to make sure it wasn't a return. Product does look factory new. Would someone who has one of these mind taking a few minutes bringing me up to speed and put e on the fastrack with this awesome GPS. I'm pretty gadget savvy so it shouldn't take long. If someone in the southeastern MA/RI would like to go out caching one day it would be funnn! Thanks, Michael
  4. Thank You, Very appreciated!!
  5. I was wanting to make a business card type calling card with the Geocacher logo on it. Is there one somewhere camera ready and is it ok to use? I wouldn't want to break any rules. Sorry if this is a dumb question. Just didnt want to use anything without getting permission first.
  6. I'm still trying to decide on which GPS to purchase next month. I was looking at the Garmin Oregon series. I asked in another topic about the T series of gps units. After talking to garmin they told me that the t series came with installed topos and the non t version just came with a basic basic base map that you would need to buy mapping or get them from a 3rd. party. The maps that come with the t series are 1/100th scale and some of the ones they sell if you owned a unit that had no maps are the dvds or ds card 1/24th scale maps. I know by researching, that the 1/24th scale are suppose to show more detail. Now in lamens terms, for geo caching and some basic hiking and climbing, what more do i get with a 1/24th is the 1/24th map like night and day for the everyday recreational gps user. I'm hoping to see some of these in action at the geo event sunday in uxbridge. Being a newbie I'm torn between the garmin oregon 550 and the 550t. I'm afraid of buying the wrong model wishing i had bought something different.
  7. Thanks for all the replies. I do have a Nuvi with the latest city navigator update. So no need for that currently. I was told by someone at REI that installing non garmin maps can cause some glitches at times. I'm sure thats just a sales pitch almost like using non OEM ink for your printer at home. I think my eyes would much prefer the larger screen on the oregon over the dakota. I've read reviews about the dimness and also heard from the same amount of people the oregon screen is just as bright. I have been saving for a while and coming into a little extra money so the cost factor isn't as important as if I didn't have monies allotted alrerady. is the 550t with the maps the same amount of free space as a 550 with just the preloaded base map. Or is the t series taking up lots of extra room? I like the idea of having topo maps ready to go any place i may travel to.
  8. When you say the Lowrance has some of the best geocaching tools, can you explain what it would do differently or better than let's say the Oregon 550t in geocaching mode This is still all new to me
  9. We spoke about all the different models available and the differences. I've been saving for a little while so $$ isnt a big issue. I had thought $175 a few weeks ago would buy me something nice as i was thinking what i spent on my nuvi for the car. after reading all over and the forums i realized there is so much more out there and 1 size doesn't fit all. With that said we spoke about several models. I think i would like a touch screen. I also think i would like some bells and whistles. He discussed the dakota's and the Oregons. My question to all of you is this: the oregon T series includes Topo Maps that are suppose to be pretty good according to him. He also explained the option of getting of not getting the T version and purchasing maps. He said the base maps that are installed in the nonT series are pretty simple. I have heard some of you talk about many 3rd party maps. I'm narrowing down my choices to the Oregon 450 or 450T or may pay the extra hundred to get the camera and get the Oregon 550 or 550T Pre installed maps on the t series adds about 100 as well. Any recommendations based on my choices? I asked about the Oregon 550 having tougher tho read screens that i've seen reported on here. He said there is more detail on the 550 that may cause it to appear that way. I don't mind the extra bulk if i get a larger screen. Don't wanna strain my eyes trying to read the thing. I look forward to meeting anyone going to Uxbridge, MA this weekend. Thanks for your replys God Bless, Michael
