It's a great unit though it does eat batteries. Mine is used only for auto navigation and it has excelled in its performance. Just a couple of notes: (1) depending on your vehicle and its windshield/dash configuration, you may find that the remote antenna may provide improved signal reeption and (2) sometime the "redraw" of the screen is rather slow. Garmin's magnetic mount external antenna really does the trick. I mounted mine on the back edge of the hood in the center. Also, it might be my imagination but it seems like the speed of the "redraw" can be improved by keeping the amount of map data to a minimum. BP

Like Hawk-Eye, I use my Vista without a case and it has held up fine. I would suggest that you cover the screen with a layer of clear plastic to protect it. I made a template then cut out a piece of the stuff they sell to protect PDA screens (Write-Right?). BP

This is something that I have wondered about for some time. Seems like the flexibility of the screen's setup is great...except for the accuracy data. I don't understand why it was omitted. Count me in as a "Yes to Accuracy" charter poll respondent! BP

You may have seen the radar speed readout trailers parked on the roadside. I passed one about a month ago not far from my home. I took the opportunity to test both cars' speedometers and my StreetPilot ColorMap and Etrex Vista. Both cars read 3 mph faster that the radar speed as I would expect from this (German) manufacturer. Both cars had the ColorMap and Vista side-by-side reading the same 35 mph as the radar trailer indicated. I should note that I made 4 passes in each vehicle while the road was deserted. Not scientific, but good enough neurosurgical work! BP
