  1. What a project!!!! Lot more work than I had planned but the coins are all drilled, tagged, and the pages edited. For those who recently e mailed I will try to send more out but for now I need to let the dust settle. I sent e mail to those who have coins designated for them. If you did not get one let me know and I will get back with you. I created a web page that lists all the coins going out if you wanted to check some others and I may create some sort of blog or area of interesting logs as the coins begin to circulate. You can see it here Dancingfools Traveling Geocoin Collection They should start finding their way into caches soon. Thanks for all the nice comments. It was nice to reconnect and look at so many profiles and cache pages and imagine the travels to come.
  2. WOW!!!!! I am blown away by the response. What a great way to end the year and begin a new one. Thanks for all the kind comments and offers to help. It will take a little time to sort it all out but I think this should be fun. A couple of ideas have percolated. It seems unfair to race since different coins will be going to many locations and.As we all know a traveler might make it to a goal location that is thousands of miles away faster than one that is hundreds of mile away.Besides this should be fun. I will probably send a bunch out with the goal of returning to me since dropping so many coins here might not work well but I plan on enlisting the aid of local cachers. Another nice reconnection with my geocaching friends. How cool is that?? With others watching the coins I will feel less pressure to track them and just enjoy the fact that they are getting shared with others on a lot of levels. It would make sense to start a thread to watch them and post comments to as well. I am going to try to set up a web page that will list all the coins and the destinations so others can watch with out clogging their watchlists I am sure quite a few will "disappear" but that is just the nature of travelers. I have recycled quite a few tags and coin #'s by releasing new items with the numbers attached. I think I have enough coins to cover those who have requested them but keep posting if you are interested. Give me some time get organized and get them drilled and tagged and I will post more and contact those who have contacted me. Michael
  3. Thanks for all the great responses. I knew I could count on cachers to help out. I had not thought about starting 50- 100 coins from my home cache at one time so I need to figure a good way to spread them out. May be a distribution party here and sending some to locations around the country with the goal of returning. I will probably set up a web page to track them and allow others to see the progress of other coins involved I'm off to work but I'll post more as the idea gels.
  4. I have been away from the coin forum for a long time and I have not had much time for Geocaching or coins lately so I have decided to send a major number of my trackable coins into the wild. My plan is to send them to others by giving them a specific home cache goal of the person I am sending it to. Once they reach the person they are intended for I suppose they can just travel or be given another similar goal. I figured the coin forums was a great place to find cachers who would enjoy being a part of releasing coins to the wild. I thought others might have some thoughts about how to make this fun. Please post your ideas or thoughts. If you are interested in getting a coin sent to you please contact me through my profile with the cache that you want the coin sent to.
  5. I did the distribution for the Maryland coins and it was a lot to keep track of 2000 numbers. There were a couple numbers that were duplicates and several that were etched incorrectly but we thought we got them all. I hope that none of those issues went unresolved. I have had several requests for codes that have been mis placed.
  6. So here is an interesting idea. I have a MtnBike V3 in my collection that I would be interested in swapping with someone. Mine has traveled to some events with me but I have been selective as to who logs it. I have no real attachment to this particular coin # and wonder if there are others. While it is not exactly traveling changing hands is a form of circulation. I know the first MtnBike coin I saw was one that was on loan and did get around. I am really excited about the event and looking forward to meeting everyone
  7. I'm glad you were able to share the name of this person. While I applaud his military service it has nothing to do with the trade he agreed to. You showed great patience in waiting for this trade to be completed. I respect what he has chosen to do with his remaining coins but it is wrong to withhold his side of the trade. He should honor his word and send the coins as he agreed to. I would not lose any sleep over where they are from or his plans for them. He is wrong to accuse you of creating this problem. I think most people on the forums can see this for what it really is and you were right to post the details.
  8. Spent several hours arranging travel today and my brain is fried. The good news is it is done and I will be there. I came close to giving up (ask me why I prefer Southwest to all other airlines) but kept at it and saved a couple hundred dollars in the process. I am so excited to meet you all.
  9. It looks like I will be able to make it to this event. I am probably coming into LAX and visit with friends on the 16th and flying to Seattle early on the 18th to visit my sister. Any kind of room sharing set up? Anyone coming from LA on the 17th? Still working out the details but it looks like a go.
  10. I live out in Maryland and have not done any of the virtuals in DC and am not working. I would be happy to join you and perhaps provide transportation depending what days you are here. You could easily spend your entire visit at the museums and still not see it all. I will send an e mail as well
  11. Would really like to attend but tickets from the DC area look really expensive and even with the advanced notice not many cheap fares seem to be available. Is there another event going on? I will keep an eye on fares as the date gets closer but it may be too expensive for me.
  12. I spent over an hour in the park today looking to see if someone moved it and abandoned it. I stopped into the park office to inquire if it was removed by some park authority as well. Sadly I did not find it. I am going to print up flyers offering a no questions asked reward and post them in hopes of turning up the original container but I think since it has been archived it is impossible to save. I feel strongly that it should be preserved. While the cache location was a bit exposed I don't think it was discovered but it is possible with all the visits it has gotten that someone noticed the activity off the trail. More sinister would be the possibility that it was taken by a cacher. There are those who feel keeping it active after the original container is gone is not authentic but I believe it is the sprit of this cache that made it special. The icon was a big factor but go back and read the logs and you get the understanding that this cache was an adventure in and of itself. People traveled from across the country to find a cache that many had found before. Many people planned vacations and roadtrips around this historic location. The container is easily reproduced and I sincerely doubt anyone would have known the difference had it been replaced. The container was showing signs of wear after years in the woods and probably should have been replaced anyway. I live close and would be honored to maintain the cache if it can be saved but I think it has been put to rest. I did talk to the park manager about placing a new cache but it would be just a tribute and not the real thing. In fact I had already placed a small replacement figuring the container would be replaced and the cache would live on.
  13. If it had been months or years or a desire to place it in another spot I would agree. The Maryland APE was archived today and there are several people and groups that would be willing and honored to maintain such an historic cache. I looked through the logs for it a little earlier and it is filled with wonderful stories and names from across the country. It seems a shame to let the essence of this cache fade away. While the size of this cache did make it stand out the spirit of it is what makes it special.
  14. I am having a hard time understanding the logic here. The APE cache's are unique and special but it certainly is not the container or the logbook. Maryland's has been visited 900 times. That alone makes it a very special location. When the original log was filled did it cease to be an APE cache? If it had a thousand visits would it be expected that the original logbook would be sufficient. The spirit of these locations is more important than the logbook or container. The original promo items are long gone but it does not diminish the cache. The original logbook for this cache is still available since it was replaced nearly a year ago and was not taken with the container. The original container was showing signs of wear as might be expected after years in the wild. No one seems to be suggesting any major changes in location or goal. Some of us in the area ( I live 2 miles from the location) have tried to be good guardians and feel strongly about keeping the location active and maintained. My first cache was muggled very soon after it was placed but I put out another container and it has been fine since then. In my opinion it is the same cache even if the container has changed. Would it be acceptable to have a cache container that was in poor condition in any other circumstance? If i wanted to place a new APE cache miles away that would be a different situation and I would agree it would not be acceptable as an APE. I hope that TPTB will reconsider and allow this cache to live on.
  15. Have Maryland 2005 and the new Virginia coins for trade. I also have my 2 non trackable personal coins. Willing to consider anything I do not have. My list is a little out of date but anything new(last 6 months) is a good bet.
  16. Only 50 coins are left. Another batch is going in the mail tomorrow. Thanks for the nice comments and the orders.
  17. More coins are available. I will be sending reminders soon for those who have requested coins but have not made payments. Nearly all orders have shipped and new orders will ship immediately. Thanks again for the positive comments and orders.
  18. I just missed getting the second batch of coins in the mail on Saturday. He looked at me and he looked at the box with the many packages and told they were closed. They will go out tomorrow. Still have 100 coins available.
  19. The first wave of coins went in the mail yesterday. I will be sending the international orders in a couple days. Nearly all paid orders were sent and people should see them in a couple days. Thank you to every one who contributed and those who purchased them
  20. The coins have arrived and I am working on getting them packed up and in the mail. They look better than I hoped. Still at least 100 left so if you want some let me know as soon as possible.
  21. I have sent payment information out to everyone who has posted. Several bounced so if you did not get an e mail from me let me know. I have reserved the coins people have requested and hope to have the coins in hand and ready to ship by the end of the month. Thanks for the nice comments and orders. There are about 250 coins still available
  22. The Virginia coins are expected to ship on August 24 and should be in my hands by the 31st. The cost will be $6.50 per coin with shipping and fees included. International orders are $7.00 per coin Coins are 42mm polished gold finish. They are trackable with a custom icon and have an additional space for personal engraving. There are 1000 being produced and 500 are still available. Please post your request here and I will send you payment information. 24. My coin got a big jump across the country (from Washington to Massachusetts) and should be moving into 5th place. I attached a sporty car to my coin in hopes it would send a racing message to those finding and moving it.
