i'm right on the same page with you...Do have to try to be insulting or is it something that just comes naturally?
Frankly, I find responses like "you have to up your game" and "if you can't take the heat stay out of the fire" to be insulting, as if those that don't have as many FTFs as some have some sort of deficiency when it comes to being the first to sign a logbook. Just the use of the term "wannabe" is insulting as it implies that someone is incapable, either physically or mentally capable, of achieving a goal.
I can come up with a variety explanations when someone might not get a lot (or any) FTFs, none of which have anything related ones ability to find geocaches.
CacherB would not have the "race" aspect to deal with at all really. there might be the occasional race, but since there isn't "30 new geocaches a day", there aren't that many geocachers period. i don't know that they (those defending agressive FTF behavior) were going down this path.First, Assume GeoCacherA lives in an area that averages 30 new geocaches a day, and has been geocaching for 7 years. GeoCacherB lives in an area with an average of 2-3 (or less) new caches a day and has only been geocaching a couple of years. GeoCacherB FTFs numbers would pale in comparison to GeoCacherA's number simply due to the availability of caches and the time each has spent playing the game.
Secondly, it boils down to a matter of priorities.
....and there is the rub.
there should be no complaining from those who have made it a priority to have a life outside of geocaching about someone neck deep in email notifications.

it is a little carrot for those folks who think of themselves as the 21st century Longfellow.

there are no silly questions....
just silly answers.

What would you do if some [forum banning statement removed] stole your unique forum avatar and your forum title that I have not seen anyone else using? Just so you know I am not and do not agree with anything said by WStemple.
two real options:
1. drive to their mom's house, wait patiently for him to leave for middle school and then taunt him vociferously.
2. improve on your icon, you made this one, now make a newer, better one.

it is the day after 10-9-10

You can play the game the way you want but at the end of the day, NO WHININIG is allowed.
whining IS how they play the game; therefore, it is allowed.

i don't keep it a secret that i do it...
but i do keep it a secret of "when" i do it. hehe. sometimes the twigs in the hair give it away to my wife though.
my mother came to town to see her grandkids. we took her geocaching. she was uninterested - she didn't understand why i was leaving the cache behind. i must not explain the concept good enough.
my sister came to town for a little holiday. i took her caching. the first cache i took her to and she was hooked. she didn't bother to tell me that she started, then one day i get an email asking "can you look at this cache page and tell me where i'm supposed to look for the cache?"

I blame soccer.
The youth soccer leagues around here don't keep score. Everybody gets a turn, and at the end of the game, both teams are "winners." Bleh.
LOL... when my son was much younger, and the activity he was involved with did the "everyone's a winner" bit - the non-competitive son said.... "but i didn't win. what's the point of this medal if everyone gets one."
he was 6 and he understood.

i got my second FTF yesterday. Gotta say i liked getting it! Yes, i cache for the scenery and hikes and hunt. But i like a little friendly competition. In my town there's a few FTF hounds and it's fun to see who gets em first!
But according to some opinion, your enjoyment of that experience yesterday would have been just as great if all the local FTF 'hounds' had stayed at home in order to let you get to that one first (assuming it was your turn).
unbeknownst to seeker, they did all stay home just for that very reason.

i like finding the ones that no one has found in a while.
i like to see a screen full of DNFs (and the occasional cutesy note from the CO saying "it's still there...."). that actually makes me feel more accomplished than being the first one out the door after the email.

I'd like to see your math on that one.
a third of what remains are power trails.

I would suggest if you do not like caching in your local dog park, remember, you do not need to find every cache. Just skip those.
pickle parks: ignore
dog parks: ignore
hides too close to a house: ignore
thanks!

As of yesterday afternoon, there were 614075 active cache listings in the USA.
OK, now how many of those are light pole caches??

it worked for me... in that it found a location. the only problem is that it located me 800 miles away from my physical location. i was having an out-of-body experience and didn't even know it. this is an awesome tool!

OK, I know it's probably obvious but, I've not yet found a thread that specifically deals with geocahers that are fulltimers ... on the road 365 days a year!
thankfully, people with that much time on their hands aren't in with the rest of us slackers on the forums... they are actually out there geocaching; therefore, there is a lack of topics specific to people with such problems.

cover up your naughty bits and try to explain that you are just a nudist out on a nature hike.

But FTF is part of the game for some.
..and that some have a near meltdown every time this topic comes up.
torquemada!

for all those that think it is just fine to send out a piece of paper instead of an actual item... take this ball and go home. the coin is the item supposed to be released, not a copy... not a handwritten note with the tracking code on it. if you can't stand to see your TB or GC disappear into the void DON'T release them. put them in your cute little three ring binder tote them to each event to show everyone - make sure you keep an eye on it though, i hear thieves know no bounds. setting a piece of paper out as if it is something else is nothing more than geospam.

brag about how hard your decision was to have the rolls bring you to the cache... or the helicopter....

there's an entire cache near work that is dedicated to the kenyan.
i've yet to stroll over and find it. hasn't bothered me one bit that it is still there on the cache page - well.... fourth page centered around work - at 9.6 miles away.
-
i feel your pain.
if only i didn't have a wife... kids... work...
i could be that guy that goes to that new stretch of 100 geocaches and spends all nights stopping every .1 mile to write my name on a log in a film can. mine are mostly opportunity and pathway.
the only issue i'd really have with most FTF hounds is the respect of time -- 1 AM in a cemetary (or park) with posted hours of "daylight" kinda hints at some problem. we may all "get them at the same time" as someone else pointed out, but some of us are restrained by common sense.
-
when you are folks going to "get it"?
al gore invented the internet. thank him for gc.com
obama keeps the satellites in orbit. thank him for the signal.
all other figures deserve NO praise.

I even put my phone number in hopes if it does get moved that an honest person will do the right thing
most bored teens don't fit that descriptor.
What would you do?

ROFL... i never noticed that's what that was. i just catch the very basics of the avatars, no subtle bits allowed... i.e. dog with glasses, i've never noticed it was a dog doing an ice carving of signal the frog.
