  1. are you aware of a thread or link to a www site that has some screen shots to get an idea of what this is like? i realize that an in person demo would be better, but the above would be interesting. thanks
  2. andynshe i did the same search and found the same lack of detail -- just "satisfaction guaranteed." LLBean and Cabela's have similar policies. a rep from LLBean once said that while they get a few cases of abuse (folks who wear out their hiking boots and then insist on a free replacement), the company believes that the goodwill (and sales) generated more than covers the expense of the abuse. all this being said, i'm curious if anyone here has ever tested the REI policy as it applies to GPS units.
  3. Thinking the same thing as I'll probably get my 400t tomorrow. Since REI has a 100% satisfaction guarantee... in theory, we could exchange the 400t for a 550t (+ price difference) when it comes out. I picked my 400t up at REI last weekend and told the sales guy I was on the fence as the 550 was due out soon. I specifically asked him if I could return the 400t later for the 550 when it was released and he told me that I definitely could. This was when I decided to kick myself for not getting my Colorado at REI as I could of switched it out for the Oregon 400. I am not sure how thay afford to do this. What if everyone that got the 400t decided to trade up (and of course pay the difference)? Let's hope that this really works out. I love the idea of the improved compass! interesting. i asked the sales rep at REI the same thing, and his reply was that the "satisfaction guarantee" was NOT applicable to upgrading to new models. i wonder what the official definition is, as there seems to be some discrepancy at the sales floor level.
  4. what about problems removing the invisible shield, if needed? i read somewhere regarding another device (not sure if it was a PDA or an ipod) about invisible shield being hard to remove and/or damaging the screen. thanks
  5. I use regular Avery shipping labels and a 1" diameter hole punch I got at a craft store. I can print six images on a label. Then I punch them out, peel, and stick. Get a good quality punch, though. I use a Paper Shapers brand. thanks so much for answering! one more question -- what software do you use for the labels? i have access to both PC and Mac. thanks again!
  6. nice thread! where does one get the labels that go on the poker chips? thanks
  7. wow! that sounds like you would be paperless, but also freed from carrying a PDA in addition to the GPSr. is there any DISadvantage to this approach?
  8. wadcutter what advantage does the shephard's crook design have over a regular straight hiking staff? thanks!
  9. i think that the problem is solved. someone at the yahoo 76cs user group suggested that accuracy and sat lock problems can be caused by the unit being set to "battery saver" mode. i don't recall every setting it to batter saver (i'll blame my wife -- always a handy excuse), but i made sure that it was not in batt saver mode and went out for some limited testing. the 76cs got me back to the waypoint i had set within about 10 feet every time, and at about 3 feet a couple of times. before, i had run the same test and was getting to within 30-50 feet of the target. i'm going to do some more in depth checking, but hopefully i'm all set and don't need to send my GPSr in for service. thanks again for all the replies! great forum!
  10. i didn't know that about the internal compass. i've been using it with the compass turned off. is there some kind of check, or calibration, that i can do to make sure it is working as it should? thanks again
  11. i've read thru the manual, and read the FAQ referenced from this forum, but have not found an answer so i'd appreciate any input. i'm concerned that my 76CS may be defective. before i return it to Garmin, i'd like to know if there is anything that i can do to remedy the problem (such as calibration, reset, whatever). i was batting 1000 with the borrowed magellan unit i started with, but since i bought the 76 i've been skunked on cache finds. i figured it was almost certainly operator error, and maybe a learning curve, so i didn't think much about it. after today, however, i'm thinking it may be the GPS. i set a waypoint at my parking spot, did some diddling around without moving location at all, went back to waypoints and saw that the GPS was indicating that i was 0.7 mile from that waypoint. that is pretty far off. checked again after going after the cache, and it still indicated that i was 0.7 mile away when i was standing right on it. took the trail to the cache, and the GPS indicated that i was gradually gettting closer to the cache by travelling SW. then, it indicated that the cache was NE. i figured i had walked past it, turned around, and sure enough the GPS indicated that i was getting closer. when i got indication that i was right on it, i stopped and started considering likely hiding spots. after checking a couple, i looked at the GPS again and it indicated that the cache was now a couple of hundred feet to the NE. i backtracked on the trail, and after getting a location indication from the GPS that clearly conflicted with the hint for the cache, i gave up. so it seems that this 76CS can't decide where it is located. is there something that i can do to straighten it out myself, or is sending it to garmin for service the thing to do? thanks!
  12. thanks miragee -- i'll give it a try.
  13. i've begun playing with GSAK and pocket queries for the first time. as i've considered the filters and search criteria, i have not figured out how to narrow down my search. more generally, i'd like to look for caches located along the blue ridge parkway (say, a 50 mile segment). i can set a 50 mile search radius, but that returns caches located in all directions. the only way i see to do this is utilizing Buxley's. more specifically, i'd like to locate caches located along hiking trails. other than reading through the cache descriptions, i don't see a way to do this. any tips or tricks i'm missing? thanks!
  14. i'd like to do a sig card laminated or plasticized (is that a word?) into a keychain. maybe the slinky dink would be the best way to do this? anyone have a link on where to get keychains like this made, or details of doing the slinky dink thing? thanks
  15. marlin01 do you have the contact info for having the labels printed? thanks
  16. sputnik_57 thanks very much for the info. i've wanted a 650 for a while and may go ahead and pull the trigger on one. i need to figure out whether to stick with verizon or switch carriers but i'm getting way off topic. back to the original post, one thing to consider is the ability to connect the PDA to the GPS. some palms are compatible, and some are not. i've read some conflicting posts on the topic and can't give the final word by any means, but if this is something you are interested in you might want to direct your palm choice accordingly.
  17. dino hunters i like that! i've been thinking about this a lot and have something in my head -- wish i knew how to do it as i feel like i'm imposing on the work of others.
  18. that hat will never look better! good job! still wondering about doing something with the silhouette, like maybe superimposed over the "streaks" that are trailing the geocyclist or in the center of geocaching tiles, square or circular. whatever i end up with i'll probably want to put on my sig card also. thanks again!
  19. here's one more i found. this is a better silhouette shape (just the black part) thanks again!
  20. i'm looking for ideas. thinking about a modification of this guy or maybe a graphic similar to this one modded into a geocaching-type (like the bicycle earlier in the thread, with the colors streaming off the back -- that one was really slick). the "bouvier" title at the bottom needs to go. i appreciate any suggestions, and the time and artistic talent spent on this!
  21. i'm definitely interested. i'd like to see how the final product looks with the label applied.
  22. signature items can be left in one's own cache for others to pick up, or placed in found caches, correct? should travel bugs only be "started" from one's own cache, or can/should they be "started" from any cache? thanks for clearing this up for me!
