  1. Living right by Leech Lake (on the south end)
  2. Haha. It is kind of the middle of nowhere We have North Dakota (mostly populated by cows), South Dakota (A little more populated, Iowa (I drove threw a few times... didn't see anything), Wisconsin, and Canada (no one lives there, right?) surrounding us. I like it though. Well, I live near Leech Lake. The groups that come in are pretty vast. A couple of music festivals (Moondance Jam) and giant parties on the lake (Eel Pout Festival) that bring in thousands of people for each event. For those events I do not expect there to be cachers. For other family based events, like Cajun Fest or Ethnic Fest and what not I sort of expect it. We have fishers from all over the states come to fish here and they bring their families. Many people live here in the summer and leave in the winter, or have cabins here. There are a lot of hunters and outdoors-people of that sort. Cyclists summer / snowmobilers in the winter because of the intricate trail system. Right now, because it is the 4th, we have almost all of those people here.
  3. I know exactly what you mean. I cringe every time I need to drive during the weekend. Especially this weekend! I figured locals would be less likely to get out and cache but I kind of expected tourists to be doing it. Thats what I like to do when I go on a trip. Just grab a cache or two.
  4. I live in a tourist town in the middle of nowhere. Well I guess I am exaggerating a bit but, it is in northern Minnesota, kind of in the middle of nowhere. Since I have placed my own caches I kind of expected during each big event that brings thousands of people into this tiny town, my caches would be getting a few more extra hits then normal. Even with the extra people in town, a couple of my caches are in the woods enough and/or out the of the way enough that if a cacher went there, they would not be threatened by non-cachers. But during each event, not one of my caches was logged. Do others in similar areas find this to be true?
  5. All great ideas. Since mine is waterproof I just carry it around like normal when it rains/snows. But keeping it in a camera bag, great idea! Also, I will keep it in a zip lock when I put it in my backpack... keep it safe from ink or whatever liquids or scratchy things could be in there. Will try to think of some other things... I might have an idea that involves sewing... I can't wait to try!
  6. After doing a few caches and using my Garmin Nuvi 500 outdoors, I have been wondering if what others do with their Nuvi units. Is there some type of holder that you can use or do you put it in your pocket? The annoying thing with the Nuvi 500 at least, is that you cannot lock the screen. So in your pocket, the screen can be touched. Since it is a touch screen this could become a problem. Just curious what others do with their units. If there is a holder out there that is convenient for caching. I have put it in my pack a few times but then I have to take it off and put it back on. Thanks for input!
  7. One thing I have been finding is that, if there is a cache with a "winter friendly" icon the parking lot might not be plowed, so there is really nowhere to legally park. If you live somewhere where you get enough snow to get stuck in, I think you should at least leave a note stating whether it is "winter friendly but no parking in the winter" or something like that. I have gone to two caches and have not been able to get them because I have nowhere to park and walking is not an option because cars are traveling 60MPH on the road it was on. I am not going take that risk for a cache.
  8. I'll just have to keep my eye out for one. I might just end up buying last years when the new ones come out for 2010. It will be cheaper that way. It is sometime in March if I remember right. Thanks!
  9. I was going to suggest the Garmin Nuvi 500. The 500 and 550 are the same, they just have different maps.
  10. I have been looking on GPSFileDepot.com for some maps. Since Minnesota is a state which many people visit just for fishing trips, I am surprised there is not one Lake Map, showing depths and structure of lakes. Does anyone know if there is one out there? Thanks!
  11. I don't see anything on Lakes yet but I will do some more searching. Thanks for the resource. It is great to know this type of stuff is out there. I am new to the GPS world and did not suspect there would be so many free maps. Thanks!
  12. KeeperOfTheMist, Harry Dolphin, ecanderson, Shop99er, The VanDucks thanks for the tips. These are all things I had in my mind. I just wanted to see if other cachers were doing things like this. wimseyguy, I am not even half Vulcan. If I was I would definitely administer that neck pinch. Also, I have recently placed a cache which is located in some phone booths. No one was around when I placed it so it was pretty easy. I look forward to doing some caching in my last city of residence, St. Paul. It will be a different game, I think. Thanks again for the input!
  13. You know, I thought the same thing. Is it Kupa, the boss in Mario Bros 1? Or that other Nintendo guy that Mario rides! That little guy... cant think of his name.
  14. Nice! That alone is almost worth getting the premo membership!
  15. I have been doing some reading. From what I understand, I can have the results of a query sent to my email with a GPX (or LOC) file with every cache that meets the criteria I have chosen? When I get the email, I can upload that GPX file to my GPS and have all of the caches that met my criteria stored on my GPS? I just want to be sure I understand this correctly. Thanks in advance for the input!
  16. Wow, that is awesome! Is there anything like this for lake maps?
  17. This is something I have always been curious of... too bad we cannot make polls on this forum... at least I don't see an option :-( flipjargendy = 25 years old.
  18. Exactly. Being discrete is the best way to go about things like this. A few well placed micro caches in town will be fun to hide. I will do some searching for the topics.
  19. Thanks. This is the case with mine too. This is virtual cache is at a GIANT windmill that produces electricity. It is amazing to see. You can walk right up to it and touch it if you wanted. It is amazing to be next to, even driving by. So far I am not sure if I will place a cache there. It has been a few years since I have been there. The area around it could have changed.
  20. Hello all, maybe because I am very new to actually doing caching this why I am asking this but this type of caching sounds fun to me just as much as caching in the middle of the woods. They are just fun in different ways. Of course, you don't want to place a cache in a place where people are going to think something bad is going on but placing and finding caches in the middle of a town or city just seem like a fun thing to me. There are a few places in the town I live in, where I think I could get away with having a great spot where a cache will not be muggled. Has anyone ever found or hidden a cache that was almost in plane sight? Basically, I am just wondering what things someone should think of when caching in a town or city where there is always a good chance someone will be walking by or at least be able to see you. Anyone have suggestions?
  21. I guess I was probably a little vague. I called these obsolete because you can hide a cache and tell someone to enjoy the view.... and yes, in my original post I was referring to Virtual Caches... and the like. Ones that are still around and active because they are grandathered. Specifically, there is one in my hometown that is a virtual cache. I was thinking of placing a cache near there, or where the virtual cache is. What are everyone's thoughts on this?
  22. I know there are rules about placing regular caches too near one another (less then .1 miles [i think]) but what about placing them next to obsolete caches (ones that you can no longer make). Are there any absolute rules about this? If not what about ethics, would it be impolite to other Cachers or the hider/creator of the original cache to place one so close?
